Live from the Steve Jobs Keynote -- "Fun new products"

9:50am PT - We're just ten minutes away now... (You can find all our pre-game coverage here).
10:05am PT - We're seated now, they're playing U2.
10:07am PT - "Good morning, thank you for joining us this morning. We've got some fun things and some medium scale things. All of us want all of them, we hope our customers do too. Let's start with the Mac -- the biggest thing these days, the transition to Intel. We're ahead of schedule, we're converting entire product line to Intel over this calendar year."
10:09am PT - "Introduced the iMac and it's doing really well out
there. The MacBook Pro reviews are off the charts; one of the things helping this transition are universal
applications. Rosetta turned out to be much stronger than we thought it would be, running most PowerPC apps. Today
we're introducing our third Intel machine, the Mac mini based on Intel's Core Solo processor."
10:11am PT - "It's two and a half to three times faster in the same box. Also, putting a Dore
Duo processor in the mini, it's 4.8x to 5.5x faster. We have a product that's over five times faster in the same form
factor. We've added Gigabit Ethernet and doubled the number of USB 2.0 ports to four. We've added analog and SPDIF
input and outputs. And it's really quiet, it's a pretty great product."
10:13am PT -
"As you know, the Mac Mini has always been BYODKM, and it continues to be that way, you can use it with our
products if you want, which looks the best of course." Shows slide with cinema display. "Or you can use it
with anyone's." Shows slide of drawn in keyboard / monitor / mouse, like what a 3rd grader would sketch. Big
laughs. "Of course you can always hook it up to televisions. It doesn't plug into cellphones though. One of the
other things we're adding to the Mac mini is Front Row, which means we have to add a remote control."
10:15am PT - "The IR sensor is added next to the disc slot,
and it uses the Apple Remote, which has only six buttons -- which is less than some of the other remotes out
there." Shows media center remotes with over fourty buttons.
10:17am
PT - Demoing Intel Mac mini: "I guess they forgot to load the content on this Mac mini. I guess I'll just
have to demo a new feature." It's called "Shared music," and uses Bonjour allowing devices to
communicate seamlessly -- and it's built into Front Row. Demos finding Phil's -- probably referring to Philip Schiller,
SVP of product marketing at Apple -- MacBook Pro, browses his shared music. Steve "accidentally" stops on
"Cocaine blues." Big laughs.
10:19am PT - Demoing
streaming video downloaded from iTunes over Front Row via Bonjour sharing. They're releasing this as an update this
week for the Mac mini and all other machines with Front Row.
10:20am PT - If you've got a Mac mini hooked up to a television in your living room, you'll be able to see the media that you've got on every machine you've got hooked up to your home network. "And, of course, the Mac mini comes with iLife 06... widely regarded as the best in the industry." Showing off iLife apps. "Let's look at the standard features in the new Mac mini, Tiger and iLife 06, Remote and Front Row, Airport Extreme and Bluetooth, DVI video out, SPDIF and analog in and out..."
10:23am PT - "We have two models, which has a 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo, 512MB RAM, 60GB hard drive, and Combo Drive. $599. Second model has a 1.67GHz Core Duo, 512MB RAM, 80GB drive Super Drive. $799."
10:24am PT - "Both of these models are available starting today. With the Mac mini this comprises 50% of our entire product line now available with Intel processors since we announced the shipment of MacBook Pros in January."
10:25am PT - "So, that's what's happening in
the Mac world. Now, let's move over and talk about music. I think you're all familiar with our latest iPods.... iPods
have a 78% marketshare of the entire MP3 market, and we're very proud of that. iTunes just passed a major milestone, we
just sold our billiionth song. In less than 3 years we sold a billion
songs." Showing ABC clip on the billionth song download.

10:27am PT - "Ok, a billion sold, so we beat McDonald's. Let's move on to some new products in the music space: a relatively simple product, but it's something we think a lot of people will want to use. iPod leather cases. We've been working on these for a while. We're gonna sell these for $99, they go on sale in mid March."
10:28am PT - "So that's the first thing, you know, we put a lot of work into making the iPod an indispensable part of on-the-go living. 40% of all autos offer iPod connectivity. So now it's time to add a second focus, in the home."
10:29am PT - "There are some products on the market that help you do that, they're powered speakers, but the problem with these products is none of them offer home stereo quality. You're not getting rid of your home stereo. What is home stereo quality? If you're an audiophile, if you close your eyes, you hear a soundstage, the speakers disappear... The second thing, maybe the most important, is precise imaging and separation."
It's obviously he's about to intro an iPod boombox given the size and
shape of the veiled device on stage.
10:30am PT - "You want a wide frequency range... room-filling power without distortion. We're gonna introduce one today that has some of the attributes of some of the speakers out there. Today we're introducing the iPod Hi-Fi."
10:31am PT - "Your stereo's really ready to move to an iPod based stereo if we can get the quality up... The Hi-Fi has a three driver system... we have a dock right on top, you can plug in any iPod we've ever shipped with a dock connector."
10:34am PT - "It even has an auxiliary input in the back so you can plug your shuffle in. Let's look inside..." Shows dissection diagrams of the Hi-Fi. "We've integrated the electronics and the power supply in there, there's no power brick. You can power this off D size batteries, you can take it out the cabana or the pool, great sound wherever you are. We have two 80mm mid range drivers in sealed acoustic suspension. We have a 130mm dual voice coil woofer with a ported bass reflex design, we get great bass on this thing that doesn't distort when you crank it up. It has a sealed resin enclosure that doesn't vibrate. ... one of the things we've done is put a speaker option in the iPod menu. Update's already out, you can set the tone control, boost the treble or the bass."
10:35am PT - "You can have the screen go black and and just display the album art. Great for newer iPods." He's going over the aforementioned features... but it's still a boombox. "We think we can deliver home stereo quality for the first time in the iPod ecosystem. How much does this cost?" Slide starts displaying products for over $1,000, like Bose systems. It's starting to feel a bit like an As-Seen-On-TV infomercial. "We're delivering audio quality absolutely competitively with these products, we're gonna price it at $349. It goes on sale... today."
10:37am PT - "We have some rooms upstairs we want you to visit, we have a kitchen, a dorm room, a living room, and a study that are set up with the iPod Hi-Fi. Home stereo. Reinvinted for the iPod age."
10:38am PT - "I'm an audiophile, and I'm getting rid of my stereo."
10:39am PT - "So,
what've we talked about today? Some really cool products, a new Mac mini that runs 5x faster... Front Row with Bonjour,
update will go out later this week... iPod cases, they're really, really nice. And, of course, the new iPod
Hi-Fi."
10:40am PT - "Thank you very much for coming today, and we'll see you all real
soon..." Jobs walks offstage, that's all! No "one more thing..." Guess we'll all have to wait
until April for Apple's 30th anniversary for a more typically Apple-big announcement. See you next time!

so if it's software update only will the apple store go down?
The apple store is still up, doesn't it usually get taken down before new products are announced? Does this mean it's a software only announcement?
lol I'm hoping for a 13" widescreen Core Solo iBook.. or um.. the MacBook Basic haha
Does anyone know when the video will be up, on the apple website, like for the other apple events?
Thanks
Luke
Here we go! I'm excited to see what cool new stuff we get to see.
could it really be new products if it wasn't hardware?
Intel Based Mac Mini is sure to come.....!
I'm chewing my arm off with anticipation! Please bring me the news FAST! Arrrgggh...
come on 16:9 video ipod!!!
What ever it is, I'm going to want one, and its going to cost me lots of money....
C'mon C'mon - can't wait!
No it's a Mac Mini Intel, i would have preferred video ipod, but unfortunately it's not. Mini *trust* me
...Steve Jobs will introduce.something link with entertainment..fun products..
Why can't I live in an area with PST! It already would have happened! ;)
@18: Software is still a product produced by Apple
Hope I'm wrong, I want a iBook/MacBook/whatever they call it
They're announcing they have gone bust I bet..
I really hope it's the macbook, not really interested in a mini
a pro version of iWeb?
G5 POWERBOOK!?
iHiFi boombox
Yeah... hopefully an intel mac mini that has a much better graphics card
Oh, I hope this is good.
time they release iLoser and iDiot for Windoze users:P
it's the new iApple, it's green and fits in the your palm. it's powered by fructose-ion battery. and is biodegradable.
he's also gonna reveal plans on next year's iOrange, iBanana, and iBlackberry
howl ong to go?
100% new ipod shuffle replacement. It's not found now on any store online. So there must be a replacement. I guess 2GB and may be a display :-) I posted the following image to the engadget contest. I didn't win but I made it to their gallery (happy me) check it out below my own version of a new shuffle:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88343918@N00/104524995/
Starts at 1:00p ET. Still a couple hours to go...
I'm hoping it's a touch screen iPod that people have been throwing around.
But at the same time I'll be mad if it is--I purchase an iPod Video when it was released.
Highly doubtful, but if they release a convertable tablet Macbook Pro, I'm selling my Powerbook!
Can any other technology company get peoples attention the same way when they announce new products?
What would be funny.... if they yank the whole mac mini line, and replace it with a media center with an amped up version of Front Row. It wouldn't suprise me. Look what Apple did with the popular iPod mini.
"I just saved a lot of money on my car insurance."
cool. im on gmt london, maybe ignorance but i never know what ET and the other stuff mean. but im sure ill check back soon
As much as we here at www.mechietechie.com would like a video iPod, or an increase in Nano memory, most analysts predict a video iPod later on in the year, and this event for new intel Macs as well as iPod accesories
Video iPod just doesnt seem to make sense right now, a mac mini DVR also doesnt make sense because it would cannibalize ITMS video sales, so i'm going with an intel mac mini featuring front row as my guess.
Secondary guesses are and iPod stereo or improvement upon airtunes with better ipod integration or a new larger cinema display geared towards the home theater market.
What i want most would be Leopard, but it says fun new products and i doubt it would be a new OS just like that =P
Hurry up and start before my class leaves the library!
I went through the previous posts to find out what time it starts. Registration at 9:00, Presentation at 10:00.
Going back through the speculation make me think this will be underwhelming. The WWJD entries will be better than any announcment today.
I'm still voting for the ipod shuffle video
FYI, the event starts at 10:00 AM Pacific time, which means 1:00 Eastern.
http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0602event.html
F5??
surely you mean Command+R! :)
"Fun New Products":
So it means no professional products for today..
HAVE FUN!!
I think it's just one new hardware product like the suffle and the rest of the show will be that the Apple software are now also working on intel mac. Like Final cut and stuff...
Looks like someones gonna sell alot of man sized tissues today.
My bet is nothing huge. More like accessories like an iBoombox or some such. I bet no new iPod, iBook, MAYBE an intel mini, but who knows.
Jobs is going to introduce an all white 8 track player thats will take over the ipod. Of course he will some how convince all his apple groupies that 8 track is the wave of the future, and they will all run out and buy them for $499.99.
"ET" means "Eastern Time", which is (right now) GMT -5.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/usa/virginia/index.htm
Dance Dance!
or
How I learned to stop worying and love da bomb.
I want a video iPod in all of it's 16:9 touchscreen goodness.
PS- If you give it WiFi and can make it get e-mail and browse the web, then I will give you one of my kidneys.
I bet it's an announcement that Apple is buying Disney. Who wants to wager?
Fun new products = iPod accessories ????
I'll bet you my afore mentioned kidney that Apple's not buying Disney. :-)
At this point, I could almost care less what it is. Oh whoopie! Apple is going to introduce some old tech in a shiny new white box with a curvaceous case. Maybe they can finally add FM radio to the iPod like everyone else has had for several years, like they did with video a few months ago! Maybe they can mimic the iRiver U10 this time! Maybe they can throw the letter "i" in front of something cleverly and force you to spend more and more and more cash on it so Steve Jobs can buy another house!
I'm so sick of apple and it's supposed hi-brow status. The products are nice, but exactly what are they doing for the industry as a whole? What are they doing for the power user?
C'mon Intel Mac Mini...
Feed me ......
If a new ipod product comes out, it'll prolly sit at a fairly high price point, driving down the ipod video's price (closer to cost!). I'm in the marketing for a video, but novelty=salivation!
My money is on 17 wide screen Macbook Pro's and Mac Mini Core Solo.
Timmay
I think that there will be full movies downloadable in iTunes. The first movies will be all pixar movies and part of the new deal...the Disney collection.
Apple Store is open... no new hardware
my guess is as good as anyone else's, so i'll throw in a couple of my own. has anyone thought of a re-introduction of ipod mini with updated specs (color screen, menu style, photos, videos, etc)? hmmm, that'd be "fun". how bout slashing prices on cinema displays? hmmm, "fun" now that regular people could actually afford a 20 or 23-incher, or two (though I am happy with my brand new gateway 21-incher). maybe it's some new softwares that make it "fun" to use your mac (remember the introduction of photo booth was fun?).
Apparenlty according to some government archive site - apple have applied for a patent involving a touchscreen music player. more info on www.ipodhacks.com i think.
I'll place a bet on an Apple PDA. There's been a lot of hullabaloo about the Newton days, so it's possible. PDAs are fun and an Apple PDA would be really fun!
Fun, Leo is in the house.
Engadget should really, at this point, come up with a live conference tracker - sort of like Yahoo! sports trackers that auto refresh and have easy support for showing photos, etc. on the fly as the event unfolds. I'd be happy to help build such a beast so I don't have to F5. :)
8:39AM PT - Members of the press are starting to arrive. Look, there's Leo Laporte. And the CNet gang. Hope there's not a fight for the good seats.
You guys must be REALLY bored.
Good point about the apple store still being open - it normally closes for an hour or so beforehand?
I know a couple of people who are jonesin' for a intel mac mini, but what I really want is and Airport Express w/ video.
Please Apple, bring me an upgraded Airport Express!!!
I've got my Mastercard right here...
who...Whaa,,has it started yet,,,gosh..dozed off here drooling on the screen...
mmmm...i think a tablet mac will be revealed hopefully!
i need a drink!
MacNN are saying that onsite reporting is banned. Is it too late for the possibilty of apple doing a live webcast.
my prediction is a mac optimized to play games.
Introducing the ipencil. It's a regular pencil thats all white and you can write and draw and do all sorts of stuff with it. Sure it's just like any other pencil, it really dosent do anyhing new or exciting but who cares its an apple product. Get yours today for only $19.99
Anyone have the link to watch the web broadcast?
If a new ipod product comes out to trump the ipod video, which is unlikely, it'll sit at a new, high price point, driving down the ipod video. I'm in the market for a video, and that would be great...but novelty = salivation!
A couple of products are coming today. Mac Mini Intel style and a Tivo like Media Center done Apple style. The highlight of the show will be the media center. Yes, they will announce that movies will be available for download - After all how good is a media center if you can't get movies?
You heard it here first. Hope this doesn't ruin the surprise for anyone.
I hope we don't overload the Engadget server again! :(
How about Mac OS available on all non-Apple Intel boxes...
What kind of a name is Ryan "Block"???
51. Jobs is going to introduce an all white 8 track player thats will take over the ipod. Of course he will some how convince all his apple groupies that 8 track is the wave of the future, and they will all run out and buy them for $499.99.
The IPod and ITunes is the 8 track of the digital generation it will be a cold day in hell when he licences Fairplay or when Apple starts to go the tube when the kids jump onto the next big thing and realise they got suckered into buying a i (am steve Jobs) product.
@The Wizard
"100% new ipod shuffle replacement. It's not found now on any store online."
What are you talking about? The iPod shuffle is still in the Apple online store: http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/
And, if you want to buy it: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPodshuffle
YES, perfect timing, sitting in biology where I just finished my homework and I have the rest of the period free. What more could a 10th grader ask for?
How about: no more OSX, lets move to Windows!
Quick, everyone boo Dvorak on 3. 1...2....3...
A betamax ipod?
I woke up this morning feeling good. Too bad I need to wait until 1pm eastern to why.
I know that it's not super-likely to happen, but my vote is for iTunes integration with the Xbox 360 or the PS3. That would certainly qualify as "fun" and nobody would see it coming. That would be a shocker that Steve Jobs would be grinning ear to ear about.

Dam... that was freaking classic :-D
Apple PDA with Wifi/BT and 3d card please!!!!
I haven't seen this anywhere else...
Today's announcement is really close to the Micorsoft announcement. What if they are related? Steve couldn't get the movie execs to pull the trigger unless the downloadable movies were cross platform and would play on different hardware. iPod/Oragami
engadget staff - it sucks that you gotta confirm each friggin comment via email - change that please
I'm hoping for an 802.11n Airport wifi update with some related video streaming features :)
The number of comments posted before His Steveness even goes on-stage is utterly staggering. Shouldn't you people be at work?
