Latest iPod video rumors: 4-inch display, Jobs scrambling for content
It was too good to be true.
Just when we thought we might actually have a day free from Apple rumors (after all, doesn't Microsoft deserve to have the rumor mill to itself for at least a
little while?), ThinkSecret has hit us with word that the "true" video iPod is still coming, and that it
will have a 4-inch display, rather than the 3.5-inch one that was claimed in earlier rumors. ThinkSecret also reports
that the video iPod is on target for a March or April release, pending content deals with studios (which we assume will
come through, given that Steve Jobs basically owns Disney now). Of course, even if the video unit is delayed,
we assume Stevie will still schedule another big press conference sometime in the next few weeks. After all, Apple has
yet to announce the Intel-powered eMac and the pleather case for the shuffle.

Umm...Jobs only has 8% holdings in Disney stock...it gives him leverage as the strongest shareholder but hardly makes him the "owner."
@ 7/MuDoggy. "One, if that pic were real"
That fake picture has been out for months now. Everyone knows it's fake.
@ 14/KevinFreitas. "I've got my eye on the Creative Zen Vision and will probably go for it."
I'd suggest you look into the Archos AV500, the Cowon (iAudio) A2, the i-Station v43 (or C&C re-branded), Maxian T600, or Viliv P1. All these products are atleast 4" and play a plethora of different formats; some even include line-in video recording, GPS navigation, over-the-air TV streaming (DMB) etc.
@ 21/z: "if this iPod really gets out, for a long time the benchmark it shall be"
How could this be the benchmark? Current iPods aren't even a benchmark from a technical or feature standpoint. What's been mentioned in this "rumour" is already offered in many other products that are available NOW.
@ 28/Armin. "Honestly, how many of you would wanna watch a 2 hour movie on the bus or train ride?
Come on, portable film viewing devices are useless, perhaps for sit coms etc."
Judging by the amount of portable DVD players and the amount of people watching movies on PMPs & PSPs and DAPs with colour screens (iAudio X5, iRivers, iPod 5G, etc) I'd say a lot. People even watch TV on their cellphone screens now. Take a look outside for more evidence.
This is false. This is based off of a flash animation some deviantART user created, with what they think it will be like.
I just got an ipod update and it has changed significantly--including a widescreen look and loads of movie trailers for the major studios. Looks like a matter of time, or Jobs is showing the level of interest in the current purchase model.
I personally love all the rumors surrounding Apple. They are much more exciting IMO than any other companies, and the products released are great. Other companies could learn a thing or two from Mr. Jobs.
WOW! 4 INCH touch screen!!!
YAWN! My Toshiba PocketPC had that 2 years ago.
"Haven't you guy's learnt not to regurgitate ThinkSecret's stuff yet. If we want to know what they're smoking today, we'll just go there and find out..."
ThinkSecrets reputation is impeccable, that is the one place Engadget needs to be if they want to entertain Mac rumors. Where Engadget gets themselves into trouble is reporting rumor sites that have no credibility.
"I heard it best on last night's Your Mac Life internet broadcast... do you really think Apple will make a "full screen" ipod like this that would be so prone to scratches when they can't even make a Nano that doesn't scratch when you slide it into a cloth pocket? I thought that summed it up best."
First, it is likely and reasonable that Apple would bevel the edges for the new players, among other things. This is sensible in light of the force of their product, legal issues pending, and rumors suggesting this. Second, of all I think that is a common understanding that no screen is going to be scratch proof, and that if this is a big concern of yours, take care of it, and buy a case. Apple is forced to confront this issue for future players, and I think they will.
I have a touchscreen iPod on my desk!

...I wish...
Apple are bound to introduce that iPod video but one thing that I can see is that they will loose the appeal of the click wheel. For me that is the reason the iPod did so well in the first place. If they go for a touch screen ipod without the wheel that is a huge risk for them. Only time will tell, I keep up to date on my iPod news at http://www.blog.easyipod.co.uk
Am I the only who realizes that you can't eat cheetohs and use this iPod! ... say good bye to watching the Wizard of Oz while listening to Pink Floyd, etc etc
Kind odd. I though that the pic looked a lot like my Palm LifeDrive sans the buttons/five way. Now that they say it's 4 inches, I pulled out my ruler... 4inches on the dot. Odd that. Anyway. A nice vision, but having watch 20+ hours of video on my LifeDrive (with TCPMP), I assure you that while a cute touch screen *looks* cool. Ya don't really want to keep smudging your screen. I like my hard buttons. Oh well. If Apple can make a solid state (no HD) flat as a Nano device with full face video, I'll be impressed. If it's as thick as the LifeDrive I have, it's a yawner. I've had it for over a year now and wouldn't recommend it.
Wasn't the eMac discontinued?
eMac. OUCH.
uhhhh, they shouldnt make a new ipod like that.first, they introduce the ipod nano, right after that, they introduced the video.its just dumb to make a new ipod.
I’ve seen this kind of thing before, but Jobs wouldn’t leak this kind of thing. It is not Jobs style + the Brits got sued when they told the public a day early about the latest incarnation of the ipod.

wow! I hate ipods but that looks nice!
I am absolutely agree that it's fake...
