DVD player inside a NES
We're not sure how much longer
the fit-something-inside-a-NES
gimmick's going to hold our fancy, but for now we're nowhere near over cramming other kinds of gadgets into our favoritest of 80s game consoles. This working NES DVD player has
functional power and reset buttons, IR receiver, and automatically opening/closing cartridge door on opening or closing
the tray. Anyone want to get a Blu-ray drive in there for some real irony up in this piece?

""We're not sure how much longer the fit-something-inside-a-NES gimmick's going to hold our fancy""
Interesting. Notice how engadget didnt say this about the Mac in-a-NES that was just posted recently.
Why is this?
TeleCustom @ Mar 7th 2006 10:08PM
cause they're obviously mac fanboys
...stuff like this makes me want to see what I can cram into my Atari 2600. Maybe cannibalize an HD based DAP and make it into some sort of mp3 player? can sit it on top of the stereo and stuff.

We had several Nintendo mod posts lately. DVD, Mac Mini, Powerglove, etc. I haven't tired of them yet, but I would like to see some wicked Sega Genesis mods.

This guy seems smart enough to put a dvd player into a NES, but he doesnt realize that the cyberhome brand dvd player has one of the highest failure rates of any dvd player on the market...
Hope it lasts him :)

It's been done before. It was real easy with an Apex AD-1500 innards as they are already a pretty small form factor.

Up in this piece?

Geez, some of you people are quick to snip at Engadget. If you guys actually read the WHOLE first sentence before you posted, you'd notice that the second half of that sentence which reads:
"...but for now we're nowhere near over cramming other kinds of gadgets into our favoritest of 80s game consoles."
..you'd obviously realize that they still dig this sort of thing. :P

Probably because it was the first time that they had posted about fitting something into a NES?
Ignoramus.

Okay, It's official, when I get a Blu-Ray player (you know,in like 5 years, when i can afford one, if the format hasn't died yet), I'm going to put it inside an old Betamax player! If blu-ray actually survived it'd be some good irony. :)

Jesus, Isn't everyone a bit snappy.
I think we can leave Engadget to bring us anything/everything they can find, if you're fed up of reading about NES mods then why the hell did you read something with the title ending "IN A NES"?

Dear Engadget,
I challenge you to put;
XBOX 360 > In a NES > In a Car
Regards.

I want to see a gamecube in an NES. Or better, a Revolution... playing the old NES games.... yeaaah...
knot_U @ Mar 8th 2006 8:10AM
I want to see a pizza maker in a NES.

I really don't see the point in putting new hardware inside old cases. I mean, if you buy a classic car you don't strip out the engine and suspension etc and replace them with modern ones, so why do it with electronics? All he's done is destroy something that will never be made again and make his dvd player look like sh*t.
matt @ Mar 8th 2006 8:19AM
#14, some people do that with cars.
And it's fun. Kind of like why people make Macquariums. It's to get people to smile, and to see if you can do it.

#5 - Cyberhome's are also very inexpensive, why spend 50-100 dollars on a dvd palyer you are going to disassemble anyway. If it doesn't work or you accidentally scratch a PCB and toast your player in the process, it's no big deal.
FYI, I have 2 Cyberhome players (picked them up at Walmart 2 years ago on sale for 29 bux apiece), and have never had any problems with them. They even play backup copies of my 4 year olds favorite movies without a hitch.
Timerider @ Mar 8th 2006 11:02AM
This is neat but I don't like destroying a cool console not produced anymore. There's a limited amount of these in the world.
P.S. I think I have that same DVD player in my basement :)
P.S.S. Wouldn't it be cool if someone made one of these that still had a working NES inside and you could switch back and forth between the two? That would be awesome.
Lorne hanks @ Mar 8th 2006 12:05PM
Wake me up when they can cram the remote into an NES controller.
JCG @ Mar 9th 2006 4:20AM
Nice, but I hope they used a broken NES.
dan-gleeballs@hotmail.co.uk @ Jan 24th 2007 6:41PM
i made a few now! they cost me about £30 to make buying faulty consoles and used dvd payers from ebay and i can sell them again for about the same, i enjoy doing it and it doesnt cost me a penny, one of the nes's worked so i put the internals into the dvd player case and now i have a nes that looks like a dvd player
