LG.Philips unveils 100-inch LCD display
The battle
between LCD and plasma for domination of your media room may have just ended. LG.Philips has unveiled what they're
billing as the world's largest LCD display, a 100-inch panel with a 5ms refresh, 3000:1 contrast ratio and 180 degree
viewing angle. The new display bests the previous size leader, Samsung's 82-incher, and is just three inches smaller
than the largest plasma display, Panasonic's 103-inch prototype. While none of these megascreens are going to show up
in stores any time soon, they're going to continue to put the squeeze on plasma displays, which are already hurting
from a price perspective, as LCD prices continue to decline.

The color reproduction looks awesome!
Darn....and to think I just purchased a 50" LG Plasma....better start saving all my pennies for this one!! lol
oshean,
the screen looks like that because the photographer used a slow shutter speed to properly expose the room and the people. That's why the screen looks washed. It's just overexposed in this photo. What the photographer should have done was properly expose the screen and use a flash to compensate for the dimmly lit room.
180 degree viewing angle? On my planet, at the extremes you would only see the frame...
And Photobob, do you have a technique for keeping the flash off the screen? (I once saw a guy trying to photograph a rear-projection slide show with a flash. That would have been even less satisfactory). The only solution here is to make two exposurees and merge them - Photoshop's new HDR function will do that. I suspect most photographs of screens are faked anyway.
Old-school pro photog trick: unfold a common cocktail napkin to a single layer and drape it over your flashes - yes, plural of 'flash' - use slave synchs for fill; no glare!
Flash is not a problem as long as you shoot at an angle, and you can step down the flash intensity too, if need be.
100 inch non-burn-in flat panel..... perfect for some huge video game sessions.
didnt they have this on display at CES?
What's more important here, the people and the room or the the TV?
Is that a standard 1080p panel, or is it higher resolution like that Chi Mei QuadHD panel announced a few weeks back? It seems like it would have to be higher resolution than 1920x1080, else those pixels would be huge...
you guys do realize that the D in LCD stands for display right?
redundancy is SO annoying.
Meh.. bring on SED. None of these big LCDs make any bit of difference if the prices don't start dropping dramatically.
If I have to argue with my wife every time I even think about buying a TV, then the prices are still too high ;)
Alan, I've read many articles about this...
LCD is the technology. And LCD display is a display using LCD technology.
Next time, look for a better reason to complain.
Flash isn't a problem if shot at an angle. If need be one can also use polarizing filters. One goes on the flash and the other on the lens.
When did LG and Philips become LG.PHILIPS???
An LCD is a liquid crystal display, a type of flat-panel display device. Writing an "LCD Display" is similar to calling that device most Americans drive in every day an "automobile car."
Why not call it a LCD TV like they are called in the shops? :)
Anyway, I suspect the photographer (assuming he bothered to put any thought it this anyway) was more concerned about getting the people in the shot to get an idea of the *size* of this compared to people. A really well reproduced image of a brightly lit and vivid screen is great, but if you can barely make out the people standing either side of it, it doesn't have as much impact.
16 comments and not one about the two girls.
Nerd Alert! Nerd Alert!
How exactly is plasma hurting? Last time I checked, (which wasn't too long ago)there was no 50" LCD in the market and even the 46" LCDs were way, way more expensive than 50" plasmas - something like $4000+ for a 46" LCD vs $2900 for a Panasonic 50" plasma.
Color rendition in LCDs are still problematic IMHO.
I'm all for thin screens, but until they solve the LCD refresh rate (pretty much solved now, just needs to be available on more models) and the color rendition (still a problem IMHO) I'm staying with plasmas. Oh, and even the 1080p resolutions shouldn't be a problem for plasmas anymore.
Impressive size, and we all know what to expect from an LCD screen color/resolution wise anyway.
And those girls are not too bad themselves. (Happy Jimbo?)
It's too bad it's only the TV you can upgrade.
Jimbo, they're wearing too much for us to comment!
all i wanted to see was the girl comments too
#11: I hold no hopes for such thing. SED is not here yet, and who knows when will it be ready for consumers at a competetive price., i think never, SED is a brand new technology that was guarded at CES 2006 from visitors and photojournalist in a dark room, hmm.., that makes me wonder what Canon and Toshiba have to hide? with their hype-claims the preach SED as the beast thing ever. This marvel cortesy of the folks at Philips IS right here.
#14: LG-Philips LCD is a joint venture between both companies to produce TFT LCD panels. Both companies also have another joint venture; LG-Philips CRT which produces various CRT shapes and sides. The companies have NOT merge, only displays and CRT businesses have.
#18: In what country, have you seen a 50" Panasonic plasma for U.S.$2,900.? and tell the truth. Not even the cheapest dealers will sell you a floor or open box unit for that price.
#17,20 and 21: i saw another set of photos from this press conference and only the one in white {far right} was REALLY pretty, the other one is just... OK. These Koreans know who to target the purchasers, nice good-looking girls paired with large flat panels what else can we ask for?
The price for this baby won't be cheap, just check the 55" under the LG brand, a whooping $15,000. This will fetch $30,000.-$50,000.
Face the facts; these femmes were chosen for their size - or lack thereof - in order to make the TeeVee look as humongous as possible; they're nor very cute, not nearly scantily enough clad to be objectified sexually, and I'd wager that neither is taller than 135cm!
Thats a HUGE bitch! :-)
1) Asian chicks don't do it for me.
2) What the heck is LED backlighting?
3) LCD Display is akin to saying NIC card. technically incorrect but nothing to complain about.
4) Like matt said, that is one HUGE bitch!
"VIN (or 'PIN') number"
In Re. "LED Backlight" ; Light emitting diodes take up less space than mini florescent backlights, use less power and contain no mercury.
It would be perfect for a home theater, if the price ever comes down.
For the previous poster, I didn't realize people were still using the term "chicks". I assume you think the LCD is really "groovy"?
Another useless creation. I dont really see the purpose in this. What the h*ll would you need with with a 100in.
display it looks good and all but i just think it is ridiculous. Just another way to make people spend there money foolishly. I tend to forget people love throwing money away on things like this...
"What the h*ll would you need with with a 100in."
You have obviously never enjoyed the big screen home theater experience. There just ain't nothing like it - don't knock it 'til ya try it.
I currently am running 95.5" screen on my main setup, and am looking for to the next step up.
I was thinking about the redudancy in "LCD display". Someone mentioned it's "a display using LCD technology".
Wouldn't it be a display using liquid crystals? Thus Liquid Crystal Display? And yes, I'm aware they aren't actually liquid crystals (I hope).
Just try to cover it with something when your friends come by. You don't want someone to tip it over since repair bill would suck.
Nice tv but can I take the two lady's instand?
sHiit thtz huge lol ..how much is this beast.?
any one kNow.?
Soooo, What youre telling me is, i can watch mind numbingly huge pornography?
perfect for eagles games!!! E-A-G-L-E-S!!!
We have a 60' for boardroom use. I thought LG had done their best then. What's with men and big sreens anyway. Takes up a lot of space and not good for Decor.
