This shouldn't come
as any surprise, given the fate of its
17-inch sibling, but it looks like Apple is
finally easing out the 20-inch G5 version of the iMac. The G5 version has already disappeared from Apple's online
stores in the UK and some other markets, though it's still available in the US for now. Apple has been
selling it for $1,499, vs.
the $1,699 price tag on the
Core Duo
model, so if you're in the US and you're content to live on the trailing edge, you may still have a little more time
to save $200 before Apple shuts the door on this one. Once the 20-inch iMac is gone, Apple will have just one G5 model
left in its lineup: the PowerMac, which starts at $1,999 for a dual-processor model.

Our local Costco warehouse is selling the G5 iMac's for $1459. When I went in on Friday they still had a whole palette full, by Sunday evening they had maybe 4 or 5 left.

Is it just me... or is that not a really ugly looking piece of hardware? What is the point of all that plastic below the display? Looks like a big white piece of plastic junk. Sorry Apple...

Just wait on those returns, more than half of the people I know who got one wanted to dump it off at a charity in frustration before the second month finished.

The price at Costco includes the 3-year Applecare warranty. If you don't plan to do HD video editing, it's a great deal.
As for the comment about junk...I joined the Apple world last year and have not looked back. What an improvement over the PC.

Last time I heard the iBooks were still PowerPC...

Oh, they stick the motherboard in the case so that the apple fan boys don't run out and buy a Dell LCD, which most of them do anyway.

Oh and the iBook is G4 and if they want to dump them off at my charity at only two months old - bring them on!

#3, Jim Kivets:
That's where the computer is. No big white plastic and it's just a monitor.

If you do photoshop work pick one up now while you can. Adobe has no plans of releasing a intel version of CS2. Who know how long it will be before they come out with CS3. I have a new intel iMac and apps that are not univeral (running on Rosetta) suck!
James @ Mar 13th 2006 1:10PM
XServes are also still G5's.
wewa @ Mar 13th 2006 1:43PM
i am on my 3rd imac g5 from costco in 2 weeks. thank god i got it from there.
i have a video of the last problem, the infamous "imac beep of death:" http://digg.com/share/iMac_G5_Beep_of_Death
Danny @ Mar 13th 2006 7:17PM
CS3 should be out in the next 9-12 months and will be Universal.
Since Apple says "half" of their computers are now Intel (iMac, MacBook Pro, Mini) there must be more than one on PowerPC...
#8 I don't know ANY Mac guy with a Dell monitor!

#14 Comparisons of Dell LCD's vs. the Apple Cinema Displays are all over the net including here on Engadget...also on scores of mac forums.
Chas @ Mar 14th 2006 12:29PM
Dell's 24" LCD monitor gets very good reviews. And I believe it's less expensive than Apple's 23". I'm looking at it to go with a PowerMac. Never (again) a Dell box, though. (Search on "dell hell" sometime.) I've had better luck with eMachines.
Apple and Dell have something very important in common now. They miss out by refusing to ackowledge three little letters: A, M, & D.

Just got the Costco deal and it also includes the iLife 06 DVD in the box. And! Costco has the mac mini for 699 with AppleCare as well.
