Of all the noisy, annoying devices in
our office, our mouse has got to be fairly close to the bottom of the list, with an annoyance factor well below that of
the fax machine, printer, coffee maker, and, of course, the dude in the next cube who insists on sharing every phone
conversation with the world. While he drums on his desk. And snaps his gum. And plays loud Flash games on his PC. But
the mouse? How much noise does
it really make? Well, it makes enough that Japan's Thanko has decided to come
out with a completely silent one, so that when you point and click, you actually point and _________. The price of
silence: about ¥2,500 ($21). We suppose if you're really sensitive to ambient noise, it could come in handy.
Otherwise, we really don't see the point. However, if Thanko has some ideas about the dude next door, we're ready to
listen.
i have been after a silent mouse for ages. this will stop my mrs moaning at me when im on games behind her:)
A silent mouse would be perfect for being in the Audio/Visual section of church. Especially when you are trying to set up the next presentation while everyone is ultra quiet during a prayer time. How 'bout just a touch pad on the ends of mouse, like those on a laptop? You could even adjust the sensitivity then.
Come on folks, where's the inovation and invention?
where can i purchase a silent mouse, i am so annoyed at bed time when my husband is on the internet and that is all i can hear, it drives me crazy. help me please. i want to buy one of these.
I have an apple mouse and keyboard , my husband has an annoying dell ...go figure the noise
In a sound booth this is a great and useful item.
As a long-time Radioshack employee I've seen a great number of interesting gadgets, and while this isn't exactly interesting (previous comments refer to numerous mods to silence existing mice), I can safely say I haven't seen a silent mouse for sale anywhere. I think devices like these need to be on more shelves.
And yes I saw the post regarding Apple's "silent" Mighty Mouse, but the majority of computerists use Windows, do they not?
ALSO, for those of you pining for silent keyboards, look up these little buggers:

This is especially great for the dorm room situation...
As lots of people have already said, there definitely IS a need for a silent mouse.
My boyf plays lots of PC games and I don't think you can imagine the noise unless you play games or have witnessed it.
It's not just the odd click, it's rapid clicking that can go on for hours and he can't hear it much cause he wears headphones so I don't have to listen to the game sounds of gunfire or zombies :|
I'm pretty close to going mad, I need to get one of these or I'm going to end up smashing the keyboard over his head haha.
where do we shop for this neat thingy?
You are absolutely right!!!! As a night person
that is making digital art, it is essential to BE QUIET. Nothing annoys ME more than bothering my dear wife who is peacefully sleeping. I've tried everything feasible to make the mouse quiet without much success. Clicking should be optional.
I realize at this late date no one will read this but, most everyone is missing the point. I like to be in the same room as my family and at night with my wife, schedules don’t always coincide so the clicking is a major issue when one of us is sleeping. What about the Library, study groups, or a very quit all night dinner for meal. Some off you need to get a life with someone other than yourselves. Anything to reduce noise is a better world. I know it’s small but the right direction. Great product idea I hope it is durable and what about a wireless one. I know it may be out there but I’m sill looking.
Anyone here a Cad Designer? When hundreds upon hundreds of these clicks per minute are needed to get the drawing job done, this has become one of the most annoying sounds you can imagine...It's the most monotonous mono tone fingers on a chalk board sound and it's not necessary to create this device to be so...If you love it, then click away friend...I hate it and I welcome any silent device on the market...
You people who don't understand the need for this are crazy! At this very moment, I have the music streaming through my noise-cancelling headphones turned up as loud as possible to try to drown out the incessant clicking of the person two cubicles away from me. I'm going craaaazzzzzy!
but does it play doom, silently?
Little reason for a silent mouse? Are you nuts? Have you ever tried playing freecell or minesweeper in an office full of people? It's only then that you realise just HOW noisy a mouse can be. They don't say anything of course. But the exchanged glances, the slight freeze in conversation and activity while I am clicking away at mines or moving the Ace of Spades to the top tray are enough. THEY KNOW. These activities have a click pattern all of their own. So I have to sneak the games in card by card, mine by mine, in between doing something vaguely "useful" in the hope that no one notices and wanders casually over to my screen to try to catch me out. It is SO annoying.
I have three words: home recording studio.
this mouse would be great if you record near your computer and want to make adjustments during the recording. a mic (especially condenser) will pick up the tiniest little click of the mouse. it's actually quite annoying to hear.
I'd love this. Everytime I click and hear the noise, I just notice it. Not that I need "stealth" operations or anything, lol. It just seems like I could very well do without all the noise. If it's only going to cost around $20-$30, then I'm game! After that, a silent keyboard is up next.
But like some of the other folks said, the "feel" has to be there, or else I'd probably end going out The Shining stylz...
