A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Funny... you don't hear much about people offering $$$ to put OS X on a Windows box.
counterzealot,
don't you uderstand that I want to use OS X, but sometimes I need windows to run windows specific programsa and games.
I would probably use OS X 90% of my time, and Windows only 10%. why don't have the best from the both worlds, especially when you have that possibility.
hmmm... www.osx86project.org is completely dead now.
that sounded worthwhile.
i like how Jan Alberts finds time to spam this board with his lame shirts and also makes yet another 'WhY woULD aNYone Want To Do That1' post. I'll never understand the mentality of these complete asshole idiots. Why are they so ATTACHED to their precious mac?? ITS A F--ING COMPUTER.
Whatever... I'll just continue to use virtual pc with no driver issues. Should run sweet on my new macbook 2.0 with 2GB of RAM.
Now someone just needs to add a right mouse button to the macbook pro, add silently cooled dual SLI discrete graphics to the x86 apple mini's, and get Aqua running on my thinkpad (any OS).
P.S. if you think any of the above will actually happen you should sit down for this: Never. Not even if hell froze over. OK, go back to work now.
This is great news, I may actually switch from PC to a mac now. The main reason i held out on mac for so long was that most computer games are not made for mac and that trying to find games made for mac on BT sites is impossible.
Cool, now all you need are drivers for ethernet and the graphics card in order to actually play PC Games......
this is amazing. This all but assures my purchase of a mac mini. It's really easy looking too.
Oh and could all the wee-pee-wees stop telling how great "thier" operating system is or why this is even done? If you're asking how and why, then you are coming to the wrong blog. Personally, I will be doing this to mine when I get it. I swear, it's like [insert os] killed your dog or something.
Andy,
No duh theres no viruses for MAC. BECAUSE NO ONE GODDAM USES ONE! People who make viruses dont give a whoot about infecting the tiny mac population. Your mac is just as vulnerable as a pc.
So it works. Cool.
What's performance like?
As for me, I'd dual boot just to use 3ds max. Not necessarily because I'd want to, but because I have to...
#37 and all other group thinkers...
There are some who would like to use a Mac at but need Windows particular tasks.
For instance, I use a powerbook at home and I lug a Dell laptop from work just to get office work done on the weekends. This is because we use in house software that only runs on Windows. For everything else OSX kicks a**.
Frikin` great job guys (or gal(s))!
I just hope Apple can't patch this damn thing.
96 funny.... if the mac platform is sow beneath you why do you grace us with your presence because i can assure you no mac fan wants you here.
Same goes to eveyone else who has some snidy comments, if its such a stupid idea etc why read the story, why comment?
It has its uses and some times you really do need that app that is only available on windows and be dammed if i am going to buy a whole box. Thats your answer 36.
51... where do i start, schoolboys sell pc's on ebay that they made from parts. Plugging in ram and graphics cards etc into the only socket on a motherboad that will fit it is not hard.
Many people who choose a mac a far more computer litterate than you average dell buyer. Taking the time to hack EFI that allows windows xp to boot on it when it is not supported is far more challenging then custom building a pc.
In fact, having the stones to apply this to an imac is far more risky than building your own pc.
How many windows users have hacked their bios and replaced it? The bios hasnt changed in decades so its not like it didnt need an excuse to be hacked because its far from perfect... enter efi
XP un-SP2 CD
So, question. Can I do this on an original XP disk and just simply bring this up to speed with patches from Microsoft?
Hard to track down a new shiney M$ SP2 XP cd.
Well, for all of those asking "Why?", here is my reason: Ive always loved macs, and alwas have wanted to use OSX, but im forced to work with some old windows programs, so i was stuck at buying a windows pc.
Now, i can finally buy a MacBook Pro, and still run my windows programs!
why why why? i'll tell u why... please stop asking !
i love macs, there are exactly two software packages I use at work that are windows-only. Now I can run those software packages on my macbook pro. In other words: 1 computer instead of 2. it's that simple. stop being such idiots about this.
it sucks that I don't have a PC to get started with this. guess I would have to find an old one somewhere. or maybe later on there would just be one boot dvd disk we can be download to save from following all those hack instructions.
Why would you want to take a lousy operating system and put it on a stable piece of hardware? I would be much more interested in seeing OS X running on a Dell or HP machine. That would be progress.
i wonder more where all the Mac user suddenly go winXP from .. surely they didnt all run out and buy XP ..
LOL.
The Mac market is about to implode. Now you can put a real OS on it, developers will stop bothering with OS X software development. Only Apple really bothers developing stuff for it anyway, and all their stuff is junk 95% of people don't bother with.
I know so many Apple users that are going to switch over now. They keep telling me they can't wait to get rid of OS X because they are sick and tired of all the bugs and vulnerabilities found in it, and the lack of any good software.
Congrats to these hackers for helping out the poor suffering Mac users. The amount of work they put into fixing the Mac so it could run Windows is testamount to just how unhappy and fed up Mac users are with OS X.
Hehehe, So, andy... acording to you OSX is not a real OS, and mac users are unhappy with OSX, and aparently macs are utterly overpriced compared to PCs (they are more expensive indeed)... that sums it up i think, but... then people is going to buy one of this incredibly overpriced bad quality machines, then get rid of OSX because is incredibly buggy and instal a super OS like windows XP, going with all the trouble of not having suported drivers yet and having to hack the XP cd so they can install it on a mac when they can get a cheap custom box with XP preinstaled. Just wanted you to think about your own statements.
I am an OSX and WinXP user. And yes OSX has many bugs, they are a little annoying but they are far from the ones i experience with windows xp. Then again windows have some apps i like or I need.
I almost never post but i'd like to do it now. So here are points i'd like to express.
1) There are incredibly annoying people from the world of mac and from the world of windows... they are just machines and you just need to use the one that suits you best.
2) About virus and spyware. Well people who think that macs are rock solid are kinda dumb... so does people who thinks that they are as insecure as windows machines. You can say what ever you want about the fact of the market share and that this is why there are no virus makers atacking macs as widely as windows. That might be true but that does not diminish the fact that OSX today has no real virus what so ever. That IS something to take into account when working. My windows box is faster than my mac, but i have to turn on an antivirus and an anti spyware so i don't have to format my machine 3 times a year. That makes my windows pc less productive than my mac because i don't have to waste those resourses on the mac. So stop making excuses for dissing macs based on market share. For some tasks windows is better. For other there is mac.
3) Mac users are not more computer literate than windows users- windows users are not more computer literate than mac users.... in my experience there are incredibly stupid people in both worlds.
4) Mac suport multiple click since several years ago, so if you so desperatly need that right click that gets almost no use on OSX you can plug an usb mouse on laptops. on the desktops... well they already come with a multibutton mouse. So no troubles with windows there.
5) Mac are more expensive than Dell... of course that you are going with one of the cheapest manufacterers of PCs.. if you try vaio you will se not much difference.. specially outside the US (Here in mexico macs are cheaper than vaios). So when you are buying a mac you are buying the software bundled that is a lot, the brand of course, the designers, the materials, etcetera. If you don't think it is worth it people can choose not to buy them. =)
I would like to say that "can't we just get along" but i actually like to read flame wars and so do you morbid people, or you would not be here past the 100th comment,
I'm writing too much, so i think i should sleep now. Thanks for reading my boring stupid and long misspelled comment. Good night in mexico.
So what's the big news?
We can now run WinXP on Apple hardware...
If I so desperately want to run WinXP, I can simply buy a nice Dell, Toshiba etc PC/laptop and be done with the whole issue.
I certainly agree that Apple offers good quality hardware but it's still quite comparable to other high-end manufacturers.
It looks like many people want Apple because it's so mega cool (iPod-ish) but can't really use Apple hardware because they're stuck with OS X. Linux users face a similar problem. The majority of users are forced to use Windows because this is the ONLY OS that can handle nearly all hardware and software.
I'd love to switch to Ubuntu Linux but I lack the knowledge and time to get all my hardware going under Ubuntu... and even if I were to manage that, I'd still be unable to run programs like Graphad Prism, Microcal Origin and Reference Manager. I need those programs and I can not switch to any alternatives!
Hate to admit it: I'm stuck with Windows :-(
Falsoman: "in my experience there are incredibly stupid people in both worlds."
probably the best quote of the day!
:D
Could people STOP asking WHY?
Here's your why
(1) developers need to test their product on both machine, so either taking two laptops with them or one with dual boot (your answer?)
(2) mac laptops are better designed than most "corporate" pc laptops, so you can either buy a pc laptop and bling it up or buy a mac pro and get dual boot (your answer?)
So stop whining and think logically. pls.
I work on both PC and Mac... this sounds great!
Imagine when a 12 inch MacBook comes out and you can hold a whole office in such a small beautiful laptop...
The reason some of you can't understand why someone is excited by the possibilties... is because you're probably lucky enough to only use one format!
You guys need to stop blowing this out of proportion, all this is doing is giving more options to the so called techno-elite since the every day user and especially apple's target market is not going to be effected. This will not be the end of the Apple so get over it.
Also, I cant wait to replace my stolen MacMini media box to give this a try.
.rtm.
Great solution, really need to try this but in the UK we seem to have Nero Express only and the setup options in the instructions are NOT available in that version.
What am I doing wrong or am I stuck?
problem i am stuck on the Installation portion #6 it says copy the xom file to my home directory. where is that? secondly when i am in the terminal it says to type
sudo cp xom.efi /System/Library/CoreServices
cd /System/Library/CoreServices
sudo bless folder . file xom.efi setBoot
so is all that above one continuous line???
it keeps telling me that xom.efi: no such file or directory found
Hmmm... Lets see, Now, if I can afford a Mac Pro Core Duo, then how many Dell PC [similar laptops] can I get with that same money?
PS - Never have I had a Windows PC that I maintained become OWN3D or compromised from outside influences! You just have to be smarter than the computer you (AB)use, and I'm much smarter than the whole lot of HAX0R5 out in the world today and for that matter, any past, present or future HAX0R5. Macs are cool to use for the right job just as Windows are cool for the right job as well! And in conclusion, If you cant keep your boxes running stable and virus free, then maybe, just maybe you should consider getting rid of your boxes and buy a Chia Pet!
Now stick that in your pipes and smoke it!
Your King has Spoken! and perhaps Smokin'
=D
IMO this really depends on what you do with your machines. I think there are going to be 3 types of people:
1) Gamers/developers who are willing, or need to spend a lot to get a top-of-the-line machine can get a very expensive PC to dual boot OSX. These people need so much that the current Macs can't satisfy their "needs" in performance.
2) Designers/artists/developers who are willing to spend some more money than averaged users for a good computer can get a Mac and dual boot WinXP. They're more than capable of doing what you wanna do with them. (The reason why I haven't added gamers here is only because of the video card driver issue, but as soon as that's solved, gamers can get Macs too.)
3) Averaged consumers who need a computer that "just works", you can get a very low-end machine (the cheapest compatible PC or Mac) and dual boot. They just need to see which machine does what they need, and then consider other factors such as specs, design, form-factor, price, etc.
Most people (80 - 85% computer users) in the world will fall into the 2nd and 3rd category. I think Apple is heading towards the right direction, but just needs to somehow make the MacMini cheaper to gain more market share from the "low-profit market".
For the overpriced issue... I don't think Dell PCs can be significantly cheaper than Macs if they were to offer IDENTICAL specs. Sure, Dell's core duo Inspiron laptops are starting 7xx (with discounts). But do they offer everything that's found in a MacBook Pro? (DVI out, WSXGA screen, Radeon X1600 GPU with 128MB dedicated VRAM, etc.) How about Sony's FE and SZ series? Averatec? Alienware (to my knowledge Alienware and Averatec don't even sell core duo laptops)? Voodoo? Based on what I saw, Macs aren't overpriced at all.
For the non-Mac savvy here, basically the ability to run Windows by booting is a "value added" thing, since we can now run the occasional PC thing that's worth running. (And so much of isn't worth bothering with.) Myself, I want to get this up and running for the games, mainly games that are to minor to make it over to the Mac OS side of the fence. Also, any parent knows that some day his kids are going to want to access some website or game or whatever that's Windows only, and being able to say, okay, I'll do that for you, is another part of the picture. I mean, Mac elegance, but Windows if I need it. If you think this won't cause a lot of people to make the plunge and get a Mac, you're wrong.
Really, it's just bragging rights...Sure, playing BF2 on your MacBook Pro would be damn schweet, but the people who buy macs are Mac people...They really don't care about the windows OS at all! Plus, if i get a MacBook Pro, i am not going to risk fucking it up with windows XP.
so if im been using a pro app (photoshop, protools) that does not currently have a universal binary (meaning i cant use it on my mbook pro), would i be able to run them on xp if i do this (at least til the universal comes out)? if so, that's a pretty good reason why to do this. adobe aint releasing shit for another year.
Does this void your warrentee though?
Outdated...

Do it officially in a LOT fewer steps.
I work at an authorized apple dealer and we tried this out on a iMac 20" Intel
1. It takes forever to do the install.
2. We were surprise the iSight showed up... But not at all surprised when you click on it that XP totally crashes the computer. And you need to reboot.
Go figure
3. You are opening a solid machine that never gets viruses, up to a plague. That will ultimatly cause unrecoverable damage.
4. Hope everyone read that Apple will not suport users in any way. No tech or software support. If your machine gets (**&^%$% up becuase of viruses Apple is not going to help you out.
ON THE PLUS SIDE
This move by Apple will show all PC user what OSX is like and what it is like to live in a world with less than 1% viruses. This is a great move by Apple to create more SWITCHERS as Apple calls them.
(POSTING 45: You dont know heaven until you been there .... buy a mac !

Andy I am with you. Once you go MAC you never go Back
TO: 134.
Apple Pro Apps have been released to run nativily on MACBOOK PRO.
Send Apple your old Apple Pro App disk and they will send you new Intel Versions.
There might be a small cost ($70 don't quote me)
Adobe will run in Rosette and works awesome. It is still fast.
If you use QUARK go to their website they have a free Intel BATA version it is free
Here's a video showing XP booting on a MacBook Pro in just 10 seconds, using Parallels software. Looks genuine. http://www.godsipod.com/xponmac/
Why XP on a Mac? Well, it has to be the right situation, but for me it was work. I have to have xp for my estimating system (I manage a body shop). When the boss man gave me money to buy a computer, I gambled that Parallels would work and the networking would be fine...
If I had placed bets I would be rich because this handles XP like a champ even though I still only bought my macbook pro w/512 mb ram. I am able to network and share files in xp and use the estimating system for all the estimates I need to write. When I get home I keep parallels closed and use the OS that I love to use.
So anyone who wants to argue "why XP"? It's because we don't like pcs but have to live with them and can run xp in a mac as if it were a wee little program.
I finally have a reason to buy a mac. Only if they made a tablet.

Have anyone knows how to do capture screen on the winxp portion of the macbook pro?
Thanks
