Revolution to get its real name at GDC?
As per usual we suggest taking this with a grain of salt, but Joystiq pointed us to a CVG post rumoring Satoru Iwata's keynote speech Thursday at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose would be used to finally give
the Revolution a real name -- they even brought up the possibly of launching the console as early as June. If you ask
us (which you didn't) we think all things considered a June launch is highly unlikely, and they'd save their
announcements for a larger platform like E3. But hey, we didn't
exactly see that Revolution controller coming either, so who
knows with what or how Nintendo wants to surprise us in the next two months.[Via Joystiq]

they better stick to the original speculation of november lol....or else I wont have enough to pre-order! (animals got sick and had to make an EXPENSIVE vet trip!)

whats wrong with revolution as a name? dolphin was better than gamecube as well. i like the codenames more than the actual names.
Christian @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:14AM
What's wrong with the name Revolution. It seems to match their strategy perfectly. Instead of throwing more memory and processors in a box, they're focusing on making better games. That sounds a lot like a revolt/Revolution against the current thinking in the game industry.
Besides, is their really a better name than Revolution. It seems a lot more stately than PS3 (delayed until infinity and beyond) and XBOX 360 (where going in circles trying to make just one must have game)

Can I have some of what Sony Star is smoking?
Saint @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:17AM
The name will be....
Nintendo On.
*Puts flamesuit on*
Loban @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:23AM
Sony Star,
I realize that you're a troll and looking for flames and all, but you could at least get your facts straight when trying to bash on Nintendo. Go with the standard "Nintendo makes kiddy games" or "the controller looks stupid". Don't bash on the controller for being wired when it is in fact completely wireless. Dumbass.
PodMonkeys @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:24AM
It seems like the majority of people are hoping on it staying "Revolution". I know I like the name.
...NES3 anyone? (because 2 is so last gen) :P
BK @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:34AM
Please, Nintendo, don't change the name from "Revolution". It has grown on me, and it sounds like a more mature name than GameCube, N64, etc. variety that you had come up with.

The NES evolved!!! The Evolution ha ha. Just a thought
Kurt @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:50AM
ay Maricon! Have you seen the playstation controller? Shits smaller than your dick and that's saying something. Looks gayer than your daddy
DJ @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:56AM
I thought I just heard that the new console was being delayed AGAIN.
Oh, that's right, it was SONY!
Getting your new game console out on time? Now that's a Revolution!!!
Loban @ Mar 22nd 2006 12:17PM
I could see it being named Nintendo RS for Revolution System. It would go right along with the DS. I wouldn't mind that.
jedda @ Mar 22nd 2006 12:51PM
Since this is the fifth nintendo home console, how about "Nintendo 5" or "NES X/2" or "Nintendo FIIV"?
Seriously though, I do like the name "Nintendo RS".
play free games @ Mar 22nd 2006 12:59PM
I'd like Nintendo to keep the Revolution name, but I do like Evolution. I also like the Nintendo RS name as others have mentioned. I just wanna try out the new controller and system.
Joris @ Mar 22nd 2006 1:05PM
Sony star, stupid fan boy, just shut up and wait and wait and wait for your PS3... Amen
Jordan @ Mar 22nd 2006 1:23PM
Man, NES3 sounds cool, as does Nintendo 5. Kind of retro, yet new and shiny.
Netboolie @ Mar 22nd 2006 1:33PM
Sony Star, wtf is Nintenda? Is that a new system? What a dumbass! Get your facts straight buddy. Also, Reggaeton sucks!
trev @ Mar 22nd 2006 1:35PM
nesolution?
Nah I think that Revolution is the perfect name for the console - seeing as it relates directly to what nintendo hope to achieve with regards to gameplay.
#4 yes Xbox 360 is a daft name :)
invaderluj @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:24PM
it will be called the Gamerectangularprism...thats what my sources say
mel @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:35PM
it'll be called Supa Dupa Nintendo 1024
Timerider @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:37PM
Yeah, whats wrong with Revolution? It's an awesome name. I really, really hope they keep it.
Sony Star:
The Revolution has wireless controllers, only wired in the developer kit. Don't lie if you don't research the subject, *cough* loser *cough*.
Matt @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:39PM
I agree with the "Nintendo RS", which I've agreed with for like 5 months now. This could be the name of the system.
IGN hint's about this if you compare the Errors for
rs.ign.com
and
poo.ign.com for example
RS.ign.com exists, while poo.ign.com doesn't.

I'd have to disagree with dolphin being better than Gamecube. Gamecube sounds just right for Nintendo. Dolphin is a weird name for a console.
JJ @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:48PM
They should call it the MZM for Mario Zelda Metroid...since that's the only games people ever buy on Nintendo machines anymore.
The machine can be as "revolutionary" as it wants...if Nintendo provides the same weak numberv of quality games as they've done with the Gamecube, who cares?
Kimmy @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:51PM
June release date is clearly out of the question. I'm sure the Q4 plan is still in full effect. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo and speaking from my perspective, I hope Nintendo sticks with the 'Revolution' title. The controller idea is a new step towards a new gaming experience and I can see why. People who are handicapped are capable of playing the Revolution now (Hence: one hand remote). Nintendo is NOT a kiddish company. They are not all about blood, sex, and gore when it comes to video games. They introduce games from all genres. Unlike Microsoft and Sony who's main goal is more 'M' and 'T' rated games. I love Sony, but dislike Microsoft (certainly shot themselves in the foot with the quick decision of shipping the Xbox 360 out before Christmas without verifying it glitch free. Id rather waste my money on the PS3). Oh, and yes Sony pushed back their PS3 release date. Maybe theyre trying to compete against Nintendo because surely Microsoft isnt their biggest rival now.
knot_U @ Mar 22nd 2006 2:54PM
How about the Nintendo XS xtream system
but seriously the revo will be 'officialy' named the Nintedo WOW I mean if you hear a word like WOW in a speach by reggie: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3523670659115894947&q=nintendo%20revolution
and by iwata it has to be inportant.

"Project Reality" was a really stupid name for console. So was Ultra 64. I think they got it right with N64.
Dolphin was a dumb name for a console too, but so was GameCube. Both, however, are better than PlayStation. I never thought that name would work, and it kind of hasn't. In Internet parlance, at least, it's "PSX" or PS3." I understand that's just shorthand, but do you say, in your head "GCN" or "GameCube"? How about PSX or PlayStation?
What a dumb post.
Ted @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:17PM
The name revolution is a good name, not great!
p.s microsoft sucks
Matt @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:20PM
"Revolution" is a better name than "New Super Mario Bros". They need to change that game's name.
Princess Zelda @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:10PM
I vote for keeping the name Revolution also, I can't think of anything that fits the system more. I just hope tomorrow we here something exciting tommorow, not just wait till E3. Although last year's GDC Keynote from Iwata-Heart of a gamer was exceptional.
Satoru Iwata @ Mar 22nd 2006 5:15PM
Dear retards;
Thank you for your continued support of all things Nintendo. Thanks to your blind fanaticism, Miyamoto is hard at work on his next project - "Turd in a Box." This revolutionary game will give the purchaser his own piece of genius, masterpiece-making, revolutionary, (insert other catchy, Miyamoto-fellating statement here) gaming experience whereupon you actually get to play with a pile of Miyamoto's fecal matter. Depending on delays and prune shipments, we hope to have this product in your hands as early as 2007. We are pleased to offer Engadget this scoop.
Sincerely Yours;
Satoru Iwata

To Mojimbo Post #32...
I normally don't comment more than once on a single post because this really isn't a forum for flame wars...but I have to point out 3 fallacies with your post:
1. My complaint with Nintendo is about the number of QUALITY games that people actually BUY not the number of schlock titles Nintendo (and every other system) release.
2. The list you linked to is nothing but a list of titles in development. The majority have not been released and are multi-platform titles or are schlock. Heck, many of them may not even come out until AFTER the Revolution is released or may not even get released at all. The list you should have linked to on IGN is here: http://cube.ign.com/index/reviews.html If you will notice, Nintendo has only released 9...yes 9 titles in ALL of 2006 so far...and that's being generous and counting Curious George as a game. Considering only one of those games even got as high as an 8.0 rating on IGN's very generous rating scale, I'd say that shows there's a real lack of QUALITY games for the Gamecube. Especially when you consider Microsoft released 21 XBOX games and 12 X360 games so far this year and Sony released 14 games for the PS2 just this MONTH alone.
3. I agree with your favorite game selection...it's just too bad that the games you listed are 4 to 14 months old. Played anything new recently? Probably not since as I discussed above there's nothing new worth playing. Hence, it should be called the MZM.
4. Loosers is plural...I'm a single person. Get your plurality straight.
Peace out.
striderhayasa @ Mar 22nd 2006 7:59PM
@JJ, it's called Naruto and it just released. Gamecube is a childish name. the 64 launch was putrid. Mario 64 and WaveRace were great but there was NOTHING in the pipeline for months. I am a Nintendo fan and I say they deserve to get ridiculed for that travesty. How do you launch a console with only one game? They did better with the Cube though. A good selection of decent launch titles, (not great by any means) that showed that the Cube is more powerful than the PS2 and can compete in some respects with the Xbox. But once again, Nintendo's piss poor marketing and refusal to openly compete doomed the Cube. No online gaming when titles like Mario Kart, F-Zero, Metroid and even Pikmin called for it. The Cube is small enough for Nintendo to fully support LAN play but did that happen? No. The only games that supported it were Mario Kart and the god-awful excuse for a sequel 1080 Snowboarding2. Metroid Prime Echos arrives and Nintendo has yet another chance to make a big splash with the multiplayer side of the title. What do they do? they give us this terribly inept multiplayer build for Metroid that only allows for deathmatch using Samus. No additional characters. NONE. I wanted to play as a Stealth Pirate with the shoulder cannon and the wrist blade. Clinging to ceilings like Predators and murdering the NoObs and the unsuspecting. But Nintendo wouldn't have it.
time and time again Nintendo will put themselves in a position to really capitalize but they just refuse. I get tired of it because it's like they care but sometimes they're just stupid. If Nintendo really wanted to boost sales of the DS in the US to match the acceptance rate of the portable in Japan...then Metroid is NOT the game we should be playing. WHY THE HELL DID THEY NOT RELEASE A CHAPTER OR SIDE STORY OF ZELDA? it didn't have to be a port. A side story or some kind of adventure that could flesh out the overall story (which is hacked to hell right now and makes no since. Which Link is in Twilight? Is it even Link from Ocarina? Who's that in Wind Waker?)
Come on Nintendo! Why couldn't you take Pikmin that has the makings of a great RTS game and give me a console based Advanced Wars in real time with LAN support!
With all that being said, I for one, am not looking forward to the Iwata Keynote address. I think Nintendo is going to release the Revolution during the 2nd or 3rd week of November in the US. they will have Metroid and Mario at launch (remember, Nintendo did say after Luigi's Mansion didn't set the world on fire, that they will never launch without Mario again). The Revolution will be a hot item this Christmas and once the novelty wears off, so will the support. a few truly great games will come out for it but unfortunately, the Revolution will suffer the same fate as the Cube.
fuchikoma @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:02PM
Haha... too bad, Nintendo - you've kept us in the dark 99% until now, and we've only known it as the Revolution - it's the Revolution. (In the same way the Playstation is the "PSX" when PSX is some kind of hybrid PS2/DVR box.)
Wes @ Mar 22nd 2006 11:13PM
Any one who thinks the Revolution will come with a wired controller needs to crawl back into the shit filled hole they came out of or do some research. i also don't see how anyone could think Nintendo sucks.
The DS is destroying the very ridiculous PSP ( which is just another playstation), the gameboy has owned handhelds since '89, and i don't see how the gamecube has done poorly. I have over 30 games for the cube currently and have owned at least 50-60 since it's release. some i've owned twice because i remembered how fun they were to play and how stupid it was to trade them in. the majority of them are all Only For games. the only game i saw that was any good for the XBOX was Halo ( Halo 2 sucked), and the PS2, well, Final Fantasy, God Of War, and Xenosaga 1 & 2 ( both coming to DS)...yeah, lot of money for nothing. Sorry if i don't find making a gang war game of some sort as real as can be and releasing it to the public ( GTA, True Crime). probably the only games that need to be taken off the market. and the 12 million madden games out there...i mean damn, why would you waste money on a game that comes out every year with minimal changes?
don't get me wrong, i love just about every type of game, but the XBOX is focused on shitty war remakes and the PS2 is all about RPGs...my gamecube has every genre i could want without a million copycats. And besides, who could not like the company that brought you everything you grown to love. from designs to ideas, Nintendo has it all. Always for the fans. They've never disappointed me. My brother's XBOX has had to be serviced like, 5 times since he got it at launch and it still has never worked right. The PS2 i had was fine for about 3 months then it broke. I've never had a problem with my Gamecube. as you can see, i am a fan of Nintendo, but only because of what i have witnessed. oh yeah, graphics are way better than the PS2's and if not slightly better than, just as good as the XBOX's...
Revenant @ Mar 23rd 2006 11:38AM
The name doesn't matter, all that matters is the quality of the games. I may "only" get Metroid, Zelda and Mario - oh, and the entire RE series to date, oops - but they are worth the wait, and in between there are excellent games like Battalion Wars, Prince of Persia (which, incidentally, side by side to the PS2 and XBox versions looks better), and in the end I spent less money.
Besides, after the SHIT STORM that Halo 2 was, and the spectacular disappointment of Halo 1 (did you SEE the announcement video? are we ever going to see that game? No.) why would anyone buy Microsoft again? And as for Sony - they may get a LOT of games, but trying to find a truly great one is like trying to find something good about windows - it's there, but it's hidden behind so much BS and mass-produced crap that getting to it is physically painful and emotionally draining.
Besides, after I saw a reputable Charity giving 360 Premium's to kids who's parent's will NEVER see an HDTV... Gifted from Microsoft - no company that mean spirited deserves my money. Sick bastards.
Jason Lynx @ Mar 24th 2006 9:08PM
To #28...
Why wouldn't Xbox be Sony's biggest rival? The original Xbox sold more than Nintendo's offering? And which company actually has their next generation system out now?
Ok... maybe I'll hold off for the new Nintendo so I can buy 5-10 year old games. I can't wait to re-buy what I bought before. Sounds a lot like Blu-Ray where I'll have to re-buy my favorite movies again.
DaMieN6669 @ Mar 25th 2006 10:29PM
#41 is right on the money.. I own a PS2 that hasn't been plugged in since, well, resident evil code veronica came out! the only thing the xbox is good for is modding and playing videos... cheap ass media player! my GCN is my console of choice... and as much as I hate Nintendo's controllers when I first see them... they always end up to be my favorite (damn you japanese ingenuity!)
And sony star... have my babies biatch!
