Sony confirms PS3 controller redesign
In an unfortunate turn of
events for the legions of Australian video game fans, Sony's president of the Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios
division Phil Harrison announced today that the upcoming PlayStation 3 controller will be unable
to pull double duty as a precision kangaroo killer. Apparently the boomerang/banana shape that we've come to
hate despise detest accept as the PS3's major drawback is being "tossed" in favor of an
unspecified redesign (NOT the one pictured here) that will be unveiled at E3 in May, mentioned Harrison in a speech
that was mainly about the Xbox Live-like PlayStation
Network Platform. There's a lot of pressure on Sony here to unveil something appealing for several reasons: they
need to placate the vocal minority of ravenous fanboys who publicly slammed the initial design, but more importantly,
they need to prove they can outdesign a bunch of very talented gaming
blog readers.

lol at the people who a) got annoyed and emotional at the picture then b) read the text followed by c) still being angry and taking out their RAGE by posting a comment
First of all, how many of you have even held the "boomerang" controller in your hands? Do you know how it feels? Yeah, I thought so. The PS3 isn't out yet, so how can you even have a pre-conceived notion about how the controller will feel like? Only certain Developers have touched the PS3 controller. All we can go by are their opinions on how it feels, and if you read any gaming magazines you'll know that they say it feels like a PS2 controller but with a little more curve to it. The only people that have said that they "hate," despise," and "detest" the "boomerang" controller are those that go by speculation only, which is the least bit credible.
I don't see it as 'caving for the fanboys' I see it as listening to the consumer. If something isn't going to work, you're not going to want to sell it.
I'd love to get my hands on that controller I think its AWSOME!!!
Hmmmm... Can you say 'Motion Sensors'?
The new PS3 controller is actually a cross between the nintendo power glove and a dance revolution mat. It is gonna be sweet.
uhm. omg. a friggin ball with buttons ?
wtf is that ?
good to bash on heads ?
Well as long as sony let 3rd party producers make other kinds its alright.
gargamel, you are joking right?
They only made the prototype to see what the 360 and rev had to offer in terms of controllers.
Once again Sony is going to copy off the companies that actually worked hard to produce something...
The Playstation 3 'boomerang' controller is the first substantial form-factor change since the original controller, ten years ago. If Sony abandons the redesign to a modified Dual Shock 2, it sounds like an admission that they can't design a unique controller. After all, the Dual Shock is only a refinement of borrowed ideas, stolen by Sony.

To whoever drew that picture:
Your brain sucks. Make it stop.
Three things need to happen:
1) I think it's about time fingers were used for buttons, not thumbs. Try playing Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked. I have to move the camera with my thumb and use my index finger to hit the buttons. I can wipe out everybody that way, but is it ergonomic? Of course not.
2) Please, please, please... whatever button arrangement Sony uses, could they PLEASE include a decent DirectInput-like API, so gamers can fully customize the controllers themselves? I'm sick of gaming companies pre-selecting only one controller layout for everyone, or only offering "gamepad layout A, B, C". I'd like to choose my own buttons to do things, thank you.
3) Revolution fanatics can harald the lack of buttons, ease of use, and "natural" interfaces all they want, but just because there's a few extra buttons doesn't mean they all HAVE to be used. Gimme plenty of buttons, and I'll remap them how I want them by myself, thank you. :)
The "Boomerang" PS3 controller looked so cool. Well i thought so anyway. I was really lookin forward to using it. Oh well, nevermind. Im sure the new design will be twice as good (i hope so anyway).
The PS3 controller will be wireless and is capable of having up to 7 at a time. So suck on that Microsoft.
Cant wait, roughly 7 months to go!!
YAY!!!
If I was a ps3, i'd shoot myself
I'd rather have a virtual boy instead of that piece of shit ps3
If any body wants a free PS3 in 7 months when it comes out you could find it in any public garbage dumpsters. When i buy a nintendo revolution it will be way better than that piece of sh*t they call a console.
Actually, no1 would waist their on that piece of sh*t in the first place, so they wouldn't get a chance to throw it out. But if you want a PS3 at a very low price, it'll probably be in the cut out bin for 3$. nvm... its not even worth it at that low of a price.
N-revolution is the winner and always will be.
Maybe sony or a third party manufacturer will release this controller later on? As long as it retains the same button configuration.
I've been a PS fan since the inception and have always thought of all the consoles, the ps dual shock was the best AND MOST COMFORTABLE controller. i dont see why sony would even think they needed to redesign. they didnt redesign for ps2 becuz they had a WORKING MODEL of excellence which the other consoles try to copy... unsuccessfull for the most part (N64's monstrocity and dreamcast's tragedy). Xbox got in the mix with a good shape, but it was too bulky and uncomfortable to weild... i agree with the previous postings about keeping the original design with just subtle changes... like colour.. with maybe added triggers, but they arent necessary.
the dreamcast controller was the most ergenomic imho!
the dreamcast controller was the most ergenomic imho!
and it really *doesnt* look like a boomerang..
i think the pic of the sphere looks like something i could use and be better than the original dual shock.
its better that they are not going with the boomerang, it seemed way too small, and i think they should stick with the dulshock 2 controler, but yet make it completely wireless and if not that, if anyone has ever used the logitech ps2 wireless controller, that would work just as well.
Well my opinion is if it aint broke don't fix it .
The Playstation controller is the last link to the old NES controller we have & from some a part of are childhood's So i say just go with the same controller just with some new mods like motion & senitivitly & or maybe even more bottons or spring loading triggers , but keeping the same shape .
Hmmm, lets knock the controller b4 you try it, lets knock it sooo much that sony is forced to change it... lets knock the fact that they are trying to please you negative viewers....how about all you haters design it then others can knock it b4 they TRY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, well, well, THAT came back to bite us in the ASS!!

"Poor nintendo shoulda kept their controller secret for longer :P"
Sorry to break it to you Sony Fanboys but no one can copy Nintendo's motion detection functions. The are patented. If they did copy them, they'd end up in the same situation as they are with Immersion over the dual-shock. The redesign will not incorporate the Revolution's features. I guarentee it.

You guarantee it, do you?
Well they've gone and done it, havn't they. Totally ripped off nintendo, and with a record in speed too. The new controller's just a PS2 one, with an xbox 360 central button, and the motion sensors of the wii-mote.
The button's not the big deal; it's the sensor. Sony have copied this straight from the wii.
Well done, Sony, for having no ideas of your own and having to copy the big N's big idea. For me, this puts me right off the PS3.
am i the only one who knew the crescent moon was a cover for the real thing?, wake up people its called "marketing strategy"
wow! that controller in the picture looks like crap im glad thats not going to be the new controller they should make it more comfterble like the 360 controller i love holding that!
I will be attending E3 this year, so maybe I'll get to see it for myself.
