Unknown device pictured on Apple website
So for some reason,
eagle-eyed reader Jacob S. was checking out the Apple website's page on educational initiatives, and stumbled upon a
picture of a bunch of smiley dentistry students at the University of Michigan using Apple products to enhance their
studies. In the photo we see a pair of Mac laptops, a trio of iPods, and....a tablet PC? That's right -- the future
dentist at the bottom of the photo is clearly scraping off some virtual tartar or tightening a set of of virtual braces
on what is definitely some sort of pen-based computing device. Our money says that is simply a case of some jokester
slipping a Microsoft-based product onto the set for kicks, because surely Apple wouldn't be so careless as to publicly
reveal a secretive product like the mythical iTablet in such a way,
would they? Would they?
Update: The consensus among our readers seems to be that this is a Compaq TC1000 series TabletPC we're seeing here; if so, kudos to Apple for publicizing the sensitive issue of mixed-OS working environments.
[Thanks, Jacob]

Hate to break it to all you - no conspiracy here. The photo wasn't even taken by Apple. The photo comes from a project at the school of dentistry partnering with Apple to host lecture content on their now-name iTunes U project.
I'm the technical lead for the project and asked that the photo be taken for a presentation I was doing to the Dean of the school and some other administrators. These are *real* students who were around when I needed the photo; they didn't prepare in any way other, just pulled out some computing devices (including ipods) and sat down in our student forum area (sorry to everyone who claims that the photo has been "sanitized").
The photo was taken by first year Dental Student Jared Van Ittersum. Apple asked us for the photos we had been using so we sent this one along.
Not every photo Apple uses is taken by Apple ;)
The use of this photo is perfectly fitting with Apple's promotion of iTunes U, a cross platform environment for getting lecture and education content.
Common guys its clear that apple is moving forward to windows is question of time , adding intel processors, guys hacking the OS, and other things, ITS GOING TO HAPPEND SOONER OR LATER
"53. Common guys its clear that apple is moving forward to windows is question of time , adding intel processors, guys hacking the OS, and other things, ITS GOING TO HAPPEND SOONER OR LATER"
Erik, you just made baby Jesus cry. Apple moved to Intel chips because IBM doesn't seem to care about putting POWER chips on portable devices. everyone has had boners for new Apple notebooks, not another behemoth desktop. i thought we all discussed this already.
Apple dumping OS X for Windows has got to be the funniest rumor i have heard in a long time. sort of like NASA staging the moon landing. just because some talented hackers got WindowsXP booting off of EFI instead of BIOS (something that Vista is supposed to be doing from the get-go) doesn't mean that Apple has some devious plans of supporting, selling or even migrating to Windows. on the same note, i guess i can proclaim that Apple is going to be putting Gentoo linux on all of their XServes. i mean, Gentoo was on an Intel Mac before Windows was. heh, that would be sweet.
and, i don't know about anyone else, but whenever i look at that picture, i'm always drawn to the woman in blue's clevage. who gives a flying leap about what some douche med student is writing on. lets talk more about iClevage! omg! Apple and Victoria's Secret are partnering! come to think of it, the Apple Store and VS shop at my local mall sure are positioned close together...
omg why does useless apple news always get so many comments. a majority of them are from idiots too.
"29. The ad is quite clever - the "cool kids" are the ones near both the ipods and the laptops. the others are in varying degrees of apple purgatory -- the dude with a tablet pc, the girl with a pen and paper, and the guy in the way back who does not have any apple product to launch him into the inner circle..."
"30. Did you notice that the Mac people know how to sit in their chairs properly. Only the Windows guy has his feet on the table, like he owns the place. What you dont see is that he is actually playing games on his tablet, not studying. After he flunks out of college, he gets a job as head of IT at a major company and buys everyone in the company discontinued tablets, "because the price was right"."
holy crap. no wonder people make fun of apple idiots. you guys come up with the most ridiculous shit. and to gary, i love your lame ass blanket statement. does it justify apple's overpriced crap? lol. that guy with the tablet is kicking back and relaxing. he's not sitting like that like he owns the place you moron.
So if it is a Compaq Tablet PC they are using, the see how the Apple users are using their PowerBooks politely, even sharing, where as the 'PC' user has their feet rudely placed on the table?
From my most untrustworthy source within the Cupertino HQ I have heard the following: the guy in the back is holding the real secret Apple products right in his hands. The brand new top secret iGamer with new invisible iOrb gesture controller. It will be a next next generation console each sporting 256 stacked 68040 processors (with fpu) of some lost stock recently found in an old storage facility. Games as iBejeweledX iGamer Edition Deluxe 3D and iPacmanX Pro 0.0.1a will most certainly be released with the iGamer console.
(sorry for the lousy translation of my Pakistani sources information)
