Notable curmudgeon John Dvorak
raised hackles last month when he suggested that an Intel-powered Apple would dump OS X and switch to Windows. Turns out he may have been right -- sort of. Word is out now that Apple has joined BAPco, an industry group that does one thing and one thing only: create benchmarks for testing the performance of Windows-based PCs. The move comes on top of rumors that Apple will include
VMWare-style virtualization capabilities in the next version of OS X, which could enable the Mac OS to run Windows apps without requiring a third-party emulator or
a reboot. While those rumors have yet to be confirmed, it does seem possible that Apple is indeed working on a way for OS X users to run Windows apps, and wants to use BAPco's tools to benchmark the Windows-on-OS X performance (though the tools are said not to work all that well in virtual environments). Either that or they just want to confirm the rumors that the MacBook Pro is the fastest Windows laptop out there.
I think it's exactly the opposite... back in the Next days, there was a product that allowed all programs written for next to be compiled to run under windows. I think that's the next evolution in the Mac OS... All programs created with xCode will get a "Yellow Box" set of libraries to be able to be run under XP.
@ 18 (Zoara)--
Dude, whatever. Don't even front. My Genesis is so much better than your Super Nintendo. and any Core Duo/Quad G5 out there. Ive got the power of 32 X and Sega CD!!! I run sh$t with this setup.
Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, even Ground Zero, Texas. Nobody has anything on that.
Maybe that would push Microsoft to stop being backward-compatible and rewrite everything from scratch...
I Have a dual core g4 with 2 800mhz proccessors runing on mac os 9.2 the processors are not intel but will i still be able to put windows on to it. Thanks for the help in advance
HMMM... A better Windows...
OS/2 Anyone?
So years ago IBM, Apple and Motorola got together to create an OS (called Pink) that would feature something they called "Frameworks." The OS would use the frameworks as a way to run OS-specific apps on Pink. So you could run a Mac program as well as a Windows program. I believe the company they set up was called Taligent.
Sadly, the last I heard that they did market research and they discovered that the market could not support 3 OS and they killed it.
Here's a better link to the history
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taligent
lol... Here is how it is. WINDOWS = GAMING : OS X = EVERYTHING ELSE.
Scooty Puff,
Actually, I was a Genesis (aka Megadrive, over here) owner. Actually, our family had three at one point! I really wanted the Sega CD jobby - Full Motion Video, wow!
The point I was making (and this is not directed at you!) was that Engadget comments so often fall into the Mac/Win argument. It's just like Genesis/SNES back all those years ago. It's booooring. If you want to use Windows, use Windows. If you want to use a Mac, use a Mac. Criticising another person's choice is a waste of effort, and it's bloody boring to read, too. It was then, it is now, and it will carry on being so.
Sup dagws if my home dawg Jobs switches to windows that be fine with me.
An April Fool's joke I assume. The ENTIRE reason I am a graphic designer is down to Apple's OS - not their computers...I'd use a mac even is they were as ugly as PCs, but the Mac OS is a beautiful thing to use. I speak as someone who used to use PCs until I used my first mac, and who still has them in the house - my wife uses PCs for the admin part of our business, but they just can't keep up with my macs for creative work. The Mac OS is why Apple is still here and why microsoft is still playing catch-up (and still years behind!)
I have two Macs, and a PC. I love Macs but I still have to use my PC for Gaming (Graphics much faster with PCIX 256mb Nvidia 6800 GS and more games)try playing Command & Conquer on a $3000 Mac then on a $1200 PC (3Ghz Pent4 631 HT 2mb L2 cache, 2Gb Ram, 250 SATA2)it will make Mac only users want to cry or put on a ski mask. Also for software like Streets & Trips 2006 with GPS, Power Punch(Home Design), Nero 7(sorry Toast try again), DVD Shink, for business Mitchell On Demand(Auto Repair, Diagrams, etc.), Shop Controller(helps me manage my auto shop), I can can go on forever. I use my MAC for a web server(no viruses), and anything I can because I love the GUI(Dashboard with YellowWhite Pages, Dictionary, etc.), and it looks nice next to my jacuzzi:})
My point is if MAC can run all windows apps (and video cards:), I would not even think about using my Super PC again.
So right now if you only have a MAC you are missing out on alot, and if you only have a Windows PC you are missing out on alot.
Sorry you must have both, If cant afford a mac or just want to test it Google "OS x86 Project".)
Yeah ruchador, thanks for bringing some reality to these comments. People here talking about all sorts of crap that absolutely doesn't make sense.
The strongest thing Apple has going for it is its OS, not its overheating hardware.
Joshua Stein, that can be done already. Though it is HUGELY illegal.
can apple lap tops runs windows XP?
