NTT DoCoMo testing Mobile WiMax and HSDPA handoffs

Japan’s NTT DoCoMo just applied for license to launch a Mobile WiMax (802.16e) network for testing. The tests will be conducted over the next year in the Yoyogi area of Tokyo and among other things, check for continuous connectivity handoffs between WiMax and other systems such as their new HSDPA network launching later this year. After seeing WiMax frequency allocation blocked in Europe last year due to heavy UMTS investment by some of its protectionists manufacturers, it does our cold, jaded hearts good to see this level of cooperation in well-mannered Japan.
