It's true that Honeywell had shopped their nascent system around and no-one wanted it. Don't think the jury didn't take that and run with it to slap some incomprehensible foreigners with a big fee. It may be that there was a lot of Chewbacca (Of)fense action at trial, and Minolta just didn't know what hit them.
But Honeywell could not have done the Maxxum in the early 80's, and didn't. My guess is that Minolta stole nothing, because there was nothing to steal.
