Sony Ericsson's W700i: just the W800i Walkman phone done-up in gold
That Sony
Ericsson Walkman line-up just keeps growing and growing. Today, SE announces their 8th Walkman phone, the W700. Said to appeal to "lovers of
classic and discreet design," the W700i throws-down tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, a 2
megapixel cam, and ships with 256MB of Memory Stick Pro Duo'in storage. Expect these to ship in Q2 nought-six in both
"titanium gold" and "smooth white." Hey, wait a second, other than being gold and shipping with a
256MB (not 512) MS Pro Duo card, there's nothing to distinguish this Walkman from the W800i released last year. Hell, it even sports the exact dimensions.
A bit trivial for a full model number change especially when the addition of EDGE, an
extra GSM band, and new controls only warranted a 10-point bump.

If they are almost identical then why Sony bothered to sed this new product to the market. What is your view about it? Is it just a publicity stant?
Is it just me or has engadget gone AWOL?
It's nearly 9:00 a.m. this Tuesday morning and we have only one "gadget" posted. The trend has been growing for some weeks.
One word... Chav.
I think the W700 camera lacks autofocus. Other than that it's exactly the same phone...
If have a weak recollection of a friend of mine who's working at SE saying that sony had a problem with production volumes of the rather advanced camera in the W800/K750, and that they therefore was going to release a new model which was basicly the same but with a simpler camera. This should be it then, right?
To be honest, most of the SE phones in this sort of range (K750i, W800i, et al) are more or less the same phone. The only difference is the outer case, and the shuffling of some buttons and what they do. The firmware is more or less exactly the same, and if you take the case off you can fit the internals into any of the other cases... a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'?
The camera does have autfocus. The new W700 incorporates some minor upgrades compared to the W800 which includes the addition of RDS to its FM radio and support for version 2.0 of the Bluetooth standard.
I think the main difference will be on price, while prices haven't been announced it should be priced below the outgoing model.
Actually, the 800 has RDS. Trust me, I own one :)
Good call Darko; The RDS on my w800i works great too.
Everybody loves that it can play any music or radio over the phone's internal loudspeaker. Eat it iPod.
Plus when I want to take a picture I don't even have to stop the music, cause it works just fine doing both at the same time.
i dont really know what to do!
Im alittle upset with Sonyericsson lately being an big fan of them, since the T68 days. What im disappointed about the most is that they dont do quad band like motorola. At least make quad band a standard.
I hear what you're saying about the iPod. I've got one too; I just use the phone if I fancy listening to the radio. Other than that I bought it mainly for the camera and the large memory card (the W800i).
Speaking from owning a SE K750i and a 2gb ms, I find it offers me the best of both worlds. While I don't expect it to replace my digital camera or ipod, it does offer me to the chance to capture the quick shots that I would probably miss out on. The music playback is very good and the camera is as well. Being that this model I purchased is a tri-band designed for Asia and Europe, but also works on T-Mobile in the U.S.
My next SE will most likely be the W810 as it offers the quad-band and same basic functions as the 750/800/900 models have to offer. Also I like the redesign on the front buttons on the W810 and the camera's cover on the backside.
I'm not a huge fan of gold-toned plastic on a phone, but it does look more neutral than the orange and white of the W800i, so looks wise I'd go for the W700 over the orange W800. Still, the K750i's black and silver versions are still the best looking colors for that type of phone.
The 2.0 Bluetooth is promising, but the only reason I'd buy a Walkman phone is if it had the A2DP and the AVRCP profiles so I can use my wireless stereo headset. Then maybe I can retire my old Rio Forge MP3 player.
My next phone is likely going to be an SE though. The price on the K750i looks like it's going down and the 2 MP camera will do in a pinch. The price is still way too high on the W810i, but I probably would have shelled out the money if it had A2DP on board.
What really has my attention is the K790a (or the K800 if Cingular ever decides to go 3G) which has a 3.2 megapixel camera. It may even have the A2DP profile as well. The only thing I'm wary of with the K790/K800 is the new Sony M2 micro memory stick format. Hopefully the price per MB won't be off the charts.
You guys that have the W810i...what network are you on? I want to get that phone but Cingular doesn't sell it? How do i know if it's compatible with cingular/alltel?
could you agree upon the fact that the SE W700i's 2.0 megapixel camera features an autofocus as the W800i,k750i and d750i's,released over a year ago?thanx in advance for your answers!

I have a W800i. Superb phone. I had a T39m, which at the time I was very happy about, especially the fact that the timer as well as the calendar alert would continuously ring in the way that the alarm did, i.e. continuously for a minute. It was also possible to simply have it silently vibrate for a minute (or until I stopped it. I need the W800i to do the same. I wondered if anyone could offer any kind of advice on this. Also,
I just bought my spanish girlfriend the same phone, but she would much rather have the phone language (menus, etc.) to be in Spanish. How can I add Spanish to the list of optional languages already included when the phone comes off the shelf?
Many thanks in advance, Richard Nowotarski
Does the W700i(or the W810i also) support Yahoo Instant Messenger?
