Sprint announces EV-DO router and USB dongle
Instead of sitting back and frowning on bandwidth hogging EV-DO to WiFi routers, Sprint has decided to jump into the game themselves with a new device made by Linksys. Accompanying the new router -- which, like current solutions, merely hosts existing PCMCIA EV-DO cards -- is a new USB dongle that brings EV-DO functionality to owners of laptops that lack PC card slots, or adventurous desktop users. Both products are due in the second half of this year, with the router going for "slightly under $200." The USB dongle still lacks a price, but we imagine it will be rather popular, especially for MacBook Pro owners with their incredibly functionless ExpressCard slots.

They are also releasing their MBR1000 which is an N router with USB and PC Express failover!
This is the cheapest piece of crap from LINKSYS amd cant handle VPN, its marketing BS and you'll endup having to tos it get a decent router.
this is a very good router when you take the linksys software out of it and replace with the white russian software it a free download from there web site i have had no problens since the soft ware upgrade about 6 months ago it stays on always and iam working only with a evo card only.

At least Sprint is trying. They earn some brownie points.
Ha ha, you said DONGLE.
Apple, please save us a step and offer an integrated evdo option for our notebooks.
Jico, try the usb wireless internet connect for apple macbook at http://wireless-internet-access-provider.com/macbook-ibook-powermac-apple-usb-pcmcia-wireless-internet.html
Will you guys get off the "Apple's useless ExpressCard" thing please. It tarnishes your otherwise glowing gadget rep. The FUD even made this weeks podcast when you told the poor limo driver not to buy yet.

EV-DO will support ExpressCard soon and you'll be glad you have it when the next gen ultrawideband adapter comes out and doesn't support the old PCMIAA standard.
What's up with the picture - exactly where does the power cord go - into the baseboard?
Why diss only Apple? HP, Lenovo and Dell have been putting that "useless" technology in their laptops for a loooong while.
All you haters need to stop and think about his. This allows Joe schmoe to take his card with him during the day and at night plug it in where he'd normally have cable or dsl network router setup. Also, if you have 5 people all with laptops and a power outlet you have instant office anywhere. Brilliant.
Isn't this the same as the Junxion Box?

Wh... wha... what? You must be fucking high. Gotta be it. Stop, think, then post.
I second #10. No smoking before posting.
If it's just a PCMCIA card, any reason why you couldn't plug an EDGE/HSDPA card in there?
Re: Power Cord
You assume the Linksys is sitting on the floor, when it's really sitting on a table. Where else would the power cord go? Unless you use a wireless power cord....
#9: I suppose it is. However, this one will probably do better because Sprint is endorsing it.
I have been waiting for this - EVDO is my only broadband ioption - but im tired of having to st near a windo with my laptop.
LinkSys has been selling an EVDO router in europe for quite some time that liiks very much like this one.
Wow, decent comments for a change.
Leave Apple alone for pity's sake. Did you whine this much when they stopped putting floppies on their machines and went with read/write CDs? Apple is the reason we aren't paying $200 for a friggin' CD read/writer. If they want to lead the market, let them though PCs are ahead on this one. As a gadget blog you should be supporting moves that use technoloyg to make our lives easier.
And the Sprint idea is smart and will be copied by others. In case you haven't noticed, Data on phones is NOT taking off. Who in HELL wants to pay $60 a month to get net access on a postage stamp screen when they pay $30 a month at home for a DSL line that feeds 5 computers thru their hub?. If I can use it during the day, take it with me when I travel, and pull it in when I get home, I'm all for saving the $30 bucks a month by using only one carrier and blowing it on some games.
I don't use this particular gadget (Sprint doesn't offer EVDO in my area...are you listening Sprint??), but I use a similar setup for my wife's mobile DJ company. We have a leased spectrum wireless modem, and a standard D-Link DI624 wi-fi router. Both are plugged into the cigarette lighter power inverter in her DJ van. Now where ever she goes she is a wi-fi hotspot which enables her to purchase music online and download it *during* an event. This essentially means that she has over 2 million songs available for guests during a show.
Requests for songs we don't have on the PC? Not a problem, she buys it and plays it within minutes.
Need internet access while meeting witha bride at her house? So long as the van is in the driveway, she's got it.
Outdoor gig at the park? Outdoors means no interference with the wireless signal.
The power cord goes into the OVEN (or microwave)! Wrapp it with some aluminium paper, call the fire-fighters and LEAVE!
Kyocera will soon be announcing firmware RK1010 that provides full support for the U720/USB720 as well as the PX500/PC5750.
As with prior firmware releases, EVDOinfo.com and 3GStore.com are first to sell KR1 routers with this new firmware! ...for more info, read:
