Mario question cube girls let off
Remember those five teenage girls from
Ravenna, Ohio, who on the eve of April first placed seventeen Mario Bros. inspired question cubes around town? Well,
after HAZMAT, the Fire Dept. and the five-O were called in and the dust settled it looked like those little ladies were
in for some serious trouble. Though it turns out the town of 12,000's dropping the case against them, the case
prosecutor stating of the squeaky-clean teens he does "not believe that they had any bad or malicious
intentions." Gee, ya think? Sure, we can understand a little why some people who didn't ever play Mario (unlike
Engadget or our readers) might have gotten concerned at the sight of these boxes, but we're just glad that a slight
case of Midwest terrorist hysteria didn't ultimately result in some crazed teenage witch hunt.[Via Joystiq]

Damn right they're dropping the 'case' against them. I still can't believe how ott they went.
God bless America!!! The terrorists have won -- they changed your way of living and how you perceived things.
Any threat against anyone could be translated to monetary sums or money making potential.
this is what happens when their is a majority of republicans in power.. needless fear runs rampant
..the case prosecutor stating of the squeaky-clean teens he "not believe that they had any bad or malicious intentions."
Wha? Is this English?
I don't get you get guys. It makes complete sense that THE terrorists would drive all the way to Ravenna, OH, a town of 12,000 to ummmm ....terrorize the heartland. Not to mention that Ravenna is vital to our economy.
" this is what happens when their is a majority of republicans in power.. needless fear runs rampant"
What do republicans have to do with this? Really? Do we blame them for terrorists?
"Sure, we can understand a little why some people who didn't ever play Mario (like you, or us at Engadget) might have gotten concerned at the sight of these boxes.."
Wait a minute. Are you saying that you guys at Engadget haven't ever played Mario? Are you suggesting that your readers haven't either? Blasphemy!
Yes.
Well, broadening the term so much anyway.
The people who bombed the world trade centers were terrorists, Yes, but the reason the republicans are to blame for the fear is because, well, they ARE the ones scaring everyone. They could just say 9/11 was a terrorist act and leave it at that, but no, they have to go and label so many others as terrorists and have a 'warning system' that reminds people we are under an 'elavated risk of terrorist attack', hellish security, domestic security issues, the bush admin is fear mongering, we havent had a terrorist attack that I know of SINCE 9/11, and I'm sure it's because of the great security (read: lack of freedoms), I am not scared of terrorists, I was ON 9/11, but not since after, I'm scared of the republicans.
liberals are pieces of shit. i can't stand any of those fucking weat ass pussies. it's the liberals scaring everyone. fuck hilary clinton no one needs a woman president.
i like mario.. good joke
Geen and here I thought it was the some Republicans and democrats shouting DOOOOOOOOMM!!!!! over the Dubai ports deal.
Neither party is the sole holder of the reigns of fear mongering. Both do it to pander. If terrorism wasn't the issue then the republicans would scare people by saying democrats want to take away our guns and democrats would scare old people by saying republicans want to take away their social security.
"Do we blame them for terrorists?"
We can in a few years as Iraq's #1 export is terrorists. What? You think this little war is bringing good feeling and joy to the folks in that region? Let me ask a question. Do you ACTUALLY think more or less people in the Middle East hate the US in 2006 then in 2001? This was all brought on by Shrub but there is plenty of blame to go around. I believe there was or on two Democrats who had the balls to vote against going to war with Iraq. Then again at the time Bush BSed the country that we need to get those WMD's before they get into the hands of a terrorist. Never forget 9/11? Heres a better one. NEVER forget the justification for a death toll that is fast approaching the # of people dead in the 9/11 attacks.) No politician would gamble voting against at act that is right us there with the Dixie Chick's Shrub bashing, or was it Texas bashing? I forget , statement.
Anyways. We are fracked in Iraq. We leave now it will be overrun by insurgence a.k.a freedom fighters a.k.a terrorists depending on who you talk to and the government leaders will be shot dead within a month. We leave in 5 years we will still have left a path of carnage behind us that will be on every recruitment poster for suicide bombers. Or my personal favorite shrub caves to Americans growing war weariness now. Which would be worse case scenario at this point. Any remaining cred in the world gets flushed in a situation where we say oh sorry. Bye bye. Clean up your own country. Literally a damned if you do damned if you dont situation we are in all because retard wanted to PLAY president when he grew up.
Geez, poor girls. I'm sure that if something like this was done in, say, San Francisco or New York City, they'd probably still be up without anyone batting an eye.
I wonder how the residents of the town would've reacted if one of the infamous Space Invaders was placed around the town... :-D
I'm talking about these:

Let off, yes. Not before the cops got their fingerprints, now they have a criminal record!
Has no one ever watched the Batman TV show? EVERY ONE knows The Riddler always leaves little things like these around town just before something bad is about to happen...
Oh and to the dumbasses above, do you really think the middle east loved us before we "viciously attacked" them after 9/11? What was the excuse you use for Clinton's ignorance leading up to and after the first Trade Center bombimng? The middle east has been at war with us for many years, going back to the Carter administration as a matter of fact. You might want to get your history books out and do a little research before you start crying about "Shrub" and all the other cute little insults you think you are qualified to make just because you watch Meet the Press and 60 minutes every Sunday.
Why is it that people who criticize liberals and are pro war use more profanity and vulgar language than anyone else? Makes you wonder doesn't it?
I love liberals. Let them keep on whining, and hope one day they pull their heads out of their asses. I have yet to see a valid argument based on facts instead of the boring old anti-Bush rhetoric. Do you want some cheese with that whine?
You'd think your brave democrats would offer some alternatives, especially in a situation where public support for republicans is dwindling, but no. They have nothing to offer. Same stuff, another day.
:p
To James (#17):
Give me a break. If I had a nickle for every liberal anti-war knucklehead who used demeaning/profane/vulgar/immature terminology, I would have long since retired.
All hail der fuhrer shrub and his fanatic supporters errr
sheep.
I just love how pleasent things get when politics get involved. I support Bush. I don't think that our country would be in very good shape had Gore won, as I doubt that he could have handled 9/11 very well. Probably would have demanded a recount on how many lives were lost in the WTC buildings. Mistakes are made. This is part of being human. However, I believe that we're better off with Bush in office then we would be had Kerry won. Immature liberals deface the names of liberals in general, and the same goes for immature conservatives. "Supa Mario" is a wonderful example of this: unintelligent (at least in his behavior), immature (Disrespectful to the president), and not willing to add anything useful to the conversation. Profanity is not the worst thing you can throw around on a comments board -- stupidity ranks even worse.
As for the Mario Cubes (you know, the article we're actually talking about?), I find it pretty funny. Sad that an April's Fools joke could be misconstrued as a terrorist threat/attack, I would have just pointed and laughed. I guess we should be glad that the kids got let off, them actually being punished for a joke that didn't hurt someone (and wasn't meant to) would have been truly tragic.
Matt honestly... I respect your opinion but lets think about that for a minute. How can you support a president that has us in Iraq on false pretenses? In 2003, honestly, if he said "I want to invade Iraq to bring them Democracy" would you have supported him?
If you say yes, then my argument is over, on the basis that you have a completely different view of war & the reasons for fighting them. But lets face facts. There have been 2349 American lives lost so far, to help Iraq vote. Over 2300 American Men & women have DIED to allow us to bring Democracy to a country in the middle east.
Was Saddam a bad person? Sure... Are their other bad people in the world? We know the answer to that. Would Gore/Kerry be better than Bush, I certainly have no idea, but I know that my trust only lasts so long, and its worn out with our current president.
To Supa Mario
That comment up there, " All hail der fuhrer shrub and his fanatic supporters errr
sheep." Is infantile and disrepectful, not just to the president, but also to people that served in and survived WWII and the Third Reich. Its also disrepectful personally, to me, I am in the armed forces, and by military law I have to support the president as he is my commander in chief. It doesn't matter if I don't like him or I love him.
Period.
Ok let me say this. Since 9/11 the Bush administration is responsible for the liberation of over 50 million individuals from the clutches of dictatorships. How can you not support that?
Sure, freeing 50 mil individuals from the clutches of a dictator is certainly nothing to scoff at, But, that isn't why we went there. Had that been the reason, there are quite a few other countries in this world with overly oppressive regimes that pose an even greater threat to the "freedom" of America. I don't understand when it went from protecting our freedoms to now protecting theirs.
Josh, you seem like a conservative. What if I said lets spend $271,936,508,473(current tax payer contribution to war cost based on appropriations) on some Social Security, Health Care, Education, name anyting domestically really... Would you support that? I don't understand the conservative view point of less taxes smaller government, yet we'll spend 3 billion dollars to "liberate 50mil individuals from the culthces of dictatorships"... I certainly don't think Republicans hate America, but before you start spouting off that liberals do, take a look in the mirror.
In the above comment, I didn't mean for it to sound like Josh said liberals hate america, it just seems to be what a lot of prominant Republicans have been saying lately. I also meant 300 billion dollars to "liberate... (not 3 billion, lol)
For 300 billion dollars we could have solved poverty AND crime that emerges from it throughout the entire country. The US that is. Not to mention the boost the education budget would have gotten. Alas, we opted, more accurately GOPs opted for "smart" bombs and guided missles that cost the U.S. tax payer in the billions. I wonder what long term financial disasters operation Iraqi freedom is going to reek on us. God help us.
When reading this blog I realized what a lot of the problem in America is. We have stopped respecting each other's views as countrymen and refused to have a respectful dialogue. By no means am I saying that this is all on one side I truly believe we ALL have done this.
Disagreeing while being disagreeable is the ultimate form of disrespect. I note that many people feel that the people on the other side of the liberal/conservative divide are disrespectful, but yet they post comments with such disrespect. Until we master our emotions the world will suffer.
I myself am liberal and feel that George Bush speaks with a forked tongue but at the same time I can understand how someone who got their input from a different source and was raised with different perspectives might see differently and I hope that in this post that I have not disrespected the conservative mind by stating my opinion. Please I beg everyone after my post, keep your dialogue respectful.
Steve
It is interesting how a news piece about Super Mario blocks in Revanna (hick slang), turns into a con/lib flamewar... How odd.
Personally, I think it is pretty cool (the SM blocks).
It is a good thing they let those boxes go. Because if they charged the girls for this, the people responsible for placing coins in the sky would need to be charged too.
now as everyone goes off on terrorism and the like just remember that this was the work of people who love video games and wanted to bring their love of them to life, the only thing that it believe they did wrong as they should have notified the proper authorities that they were planning this and it would have solved everthing and we would have never heard about it, it comes down to what most people need, just a little common sense
Bah, so someone stuck a few blocks around town. I wouldn't even have noticed them in my daily drive, actually I might have, but I wouldn't have gave a care or known what they were at first.
Now if the girls had been topless, then I might have looked lol.
Wait till they put up a bowser statue! and then, houston, we have a problem.. government will take it down like they did saddam's statue! :)
