The Engadget store
So Engadget finally has a store. Aren't you stoked? Too bad it's absolutely not affiliated with Engadget or its parent
companies (if it is, in fact, real, and not a photoshop or hoax). That, and apparently it's located in the Midvalley
Megamall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So, next time someone's in Malaysia, would you do us a favor and check up on 'em,
make sure they're doing the Engadget name good? And since we can only assume the Engadget store's proprietors are
reading this, we'd like to shout 'em out and say hey, what's up, were you planning on telling us about this at some
point? Yeah, we can understand why not.
Update: Uh, yeah, we can with some amount of certainty confirm that this isn't a photoshop job (see pics here, here, here, here, here, here, and here). Thanks to David, Sunil, and SCH! So, anyone talk to these guys yet?

Did anyone read the friggin post? WHERE DID IT SAY THAT ENGADGET WAS PISSED AND WANTED TO SUE?
It's good publicity. And, for all those "experts", hate to break it to you, keep your regular job. There have been at least 3 different comments with different pictures with different angles with different focuses - all with the same store. If video games have sucked out all your imaginations, Ned was actually JOKING.
guyz come down here. yesterday I went to mega mall to see if i can find any xbox 360 there. looking for it I came across this shop. Its on the 2nd floor in a place called IT city. well they did steal your name thats for sure. but the picture here is a bit photoshopped. the rss feed thing is an addition. they dont have that.
and you can see that they used a different font type than the one in www.ENGADGET.com .
#50 is right, I can barely make out the words "ENGADGET DIGITAL MOBILITY". Could our Malaysian friends check out the store at the aforementioned shopping mall, store number 18?
Um. That actually looks quite real!
Lets all get on with life. So there is a shop in Malaysia called Engadget! *Gasp* If its psed its psed. Who cares! Oh no my beloved Engadget's name is being used in Malaysia where United States Law doesnt apply. They arent by the looks degrading the name so whats the big deal? Engadget doesn't seem to care or else they would have posted "Engadget website to sue Engadget store" from what i read they are making a joke.
NO MORE PHOTOSHOPS!!! Clearly a photoshop. Look at the light cast on the ceiling. It's not even centered to the text. The right side should be lit up MUCH more. It's just so fake. NO MORE!!!!
who ever photoshoped it got exactly what they wanted, lots of attention
Ugh... first Gizmodo (yes there's a shop called Gizmodo here as well.. or was it Gizmondo but with the Gizmodo font?) now Engadget. The main grip I have with these 'gadget' shops is that they don't sell one piece of USB POWERED THINGAMOBOB, no air freshers, no cup warmers, nothing!!!
Theses fellow country men shame me... :P
To #7, the Midvalley website is rubbish! I tried calling the PUMA store to find out about a shoe, and I had to go to atleast 3 different numbers just to get to the PUMA store!
I wana go up to them and ask them "Is your shop trying to copy the Engadget website? Coz it looks awfully similar!"
This is not photoshopped. Unfortunately it's real.
I saw this on the weekend, i thought nooo way, that can't be the same logo. But it is, complete with radar symbol. It's a generic PC computer shop like hundereds of other shops in the area, in fact their stuff is not even that interesting compared to others.
definitely no gadgets, and definitely does not do the logo proud.
LOL at all the Photoshop "experts", and even more at the signage expert who says this sign cannot be made! Good luck anyone who buys a sign from him...
For the record, as I live 10 minutes from Midvalley Megamall, yes, this store is for real. And it will probably be gone in six months or so. The company is Engadget Digital Mobility Sdn. Bhd. They come, they go...all the time.
Take care of those new shops!! They are invading the world. See here : http://users.skynet.be/flamingo/images/
There is no Engadget Digital Mobility Sdn. Bhd. registered in Malaysia. Read # 92.
Erm this shop is real. I was there last week and they were setting up. I commented about it to my friend when I saw it last week. I say hey, those buggers!!
Sue them for sure!!! They are using engadgets good name to try sell their products. Someone walks to the mall, sees a so call "Engadget" store and thinks, hey this where I can get hold of stuff on Engadget. Take them to court.
I also did a Business name search....well well..
http://www.ssm.com.my/name_searchrob.php?txtrobregno=&txtrobname=engadget&cmbrobstate=&curr_page=1
Personally I think it looks liek a projection to me. Still think you should sue their asses though.
Top marks, Coodeta, for finding that link! I lost the info. Now mr StopSpamming can stfu.

I don't know how Malaysia handles things like this, but I do have a friend that had something similar happen in the Philippines.
He has an online business here in the U.S. Someone over there stole the name, logo, basic inventory, etc. and made a mall store out of it. The whole process took about a year, but he did get that store shut down due to name infringements.
I would definitely suggest talking to your lawyer(s) and the Malaysian authorities. You might be able to do the same thing.
Although Us law doesn't apply in Malaysia, those crazy Chinese-Malaysian should've known better than taking a popular site's name and use it to boost their sales. Damn those chinese for tarnishing my country's name. Engadget should sue them for all it's worth. Well, what can I say, a chinese will alwyas be a chinese no matter where they are.
I cant believe how many people don't read properly.
It's clearly been shown that a person on this thread has taken their K750i and snapped 2 pics of the store. SO IT IS REAL. Stop being idiots. And to those who keep shouting "photoshopped - this is bent - that's crooked - wrong font".
a) You've never seem a cheapo neon sign before?
b) Font? Gimme a break. So they picked a different font - that makes it fake?
Christ, some of you guys are a bunch of retards. Get off the thread and let some intelligent people argue the legality of the sign. We're done establishing it's a real shop sign.
i am from malaysia, i think i feel very shame on this kind of people trying to use branded name even site name like this to promote and create miss understand or confusion to people or customer...if they want to do business, do it nicely and with their own brand...even one day when they sucess, they can be proud for themselves...if not, like this? bring them nothing but shame or using "other people foot" to gain business for what?
I was just there a few weeks ago for the Formula 1 race. Nice store, picked up an engadget travel bag.
No recourse available.
Trademarks provide only national protection. I doubt anyone bothered to pay the fees to protect "engadget" worldwide.
(believe me, MS and Apple pay a fortune to register their trademarks worldwide BEFORE products are released, to prevent any trademark pirates from snatching them up...)
Amazing. That sucks but go figure.
#112 Intensecure, read carefully before you shout STFU. Go and re-read #92, 93 & 111.
The link by Coodeta confirmed that there is NO "Sdn Bhd" in the company name. It is just a business registration, most probably sole proprietorship, and not Private Limited Company (Sdn Bhd or PLC). There is a world of difference if a company is a Sdn Bhd, as compared to plain business. Obviously the owner of the shop was trying to mislead the public too.
Name calling here only shows one's stupidity.
It smells plastic.
Let's make another store around here!
http://www.resumengadget.com/
Go for it engadget, open up a store here in the U.S.
Hi Peter and Ryan! I went to see the shop yesterday. Yes, it's real but I didn't manage to talk to the owner. More photos here (taken with my Treo 650):
http://www.ethergy.com/blog/2006/04/engadget-store-in-kuala-lumpur.html
if you look properly, the sign at the bottom right shows.
DIMILIKI OLEH ENGADGET DIGITAL MOBILITY SDN BHD
SDN BHD stands for "Private Limited."
DIMILIKI OLEH means "Owned By"
Looks like a valid company name to me. Also, it's hard to photoshop that small a detail.
Some of you people need to get out more. Trademarks are pretty much unenforceable in the third world. Here's a picture I took of a shoe store in Lima that was using the Gorillaz logo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mandyandlane/40701863/
Hi, I'm Mlaysian and dissapointed that they blatently ripped you guys off, but hey, take it as a compliment ey?! You could probably sue, but then again they probably sell crap and people who know wouldn't associate you guys with them. What do they sell? Information? or stupid ripp off gadgets too???
Hey malaysianinfrance, no need for name calling and condemnation of other races. For all you know might be some other race that financially backs the store.
Someone can just record a video to shut all these people up. Meanwhile, I think the owner must be an Engadget reader!
guys,
that shope is real. like the rest of the malaysians here have said, it's in mid valley on the 2nd floor in the it world area. u just have to walk straight all the way till it's like a t-junction and then turn left. you'll be able to see it there and a host of other new stores that just opened up at that section of the it world.
fiy, i don't think you can sue unless they directly ripped of an exact copy of the engadget logo that you see at the top of this page. saying that, you would notice that this site's 'engadget))' has a totally diffrerent font and instead of 3 signals as compared to the one at mid valley, it has 2 only.
to those who are not familiar with that shop, they sell alot of polycarbonate/plastic handphone casings for your pda/mobiles/mp3 player and all those silicon skins for your ipods and stuff. it's on the right hand side of the stores showcase floor. that left side sells some other gadgets that i didn't bother with because i went there to look for a casing for my vision:m.
overseas ppl(ang mohs),
what other proof do you want? i was laughing my ass off at the way you guys were giving theories as to how the 'engadget)))' was photoshopped!!!
*no offence to all, but i think this argument is pretty daft*
*pirating or no pirating, you who p2p with torrents/emule/ares/etc are no different from the pirated stuff being sold here.*
The final verdict: this one's the real McCoy. Went to MidValley Megamall last Friday to watch a movie, and decided to scout around first. Found the shop on the 1st floor, located inside the IT World which houses MidValley Megamall's IT shops. Those guys in there were curious why I was chuckling to myself right there and then :)
Hey there all you engadget store doubters.
I have actually been to the store and can verify beyond doubt that it is a real-living existence.
Quite a coincidence really that I happened to be walking in the midvalley megamall on the exact level that the engadget shop is on...considering its in KL and Im in Australia
I remember thinking 'cool an engadget shop' but it turned out to be just another boring B-grade computer shop...nothing to do with engadget.com
And if you still don't believe me, visit it yourself!
I can vouch for what he says above. I'm Malaysian and been to that mall plenty of times.
cheers, Alex ^.^
Truly Asia..
