TiVo getting interactive and on-demand ads
It was no surprise that TiVo's fast-forward banner ads
didn't quite take as they might have hoped, but BusinessWeek is reporting that next month we can expect to see some new
TiVo-based advertising systems rolled out, including interactive ads and ads on demand. Yes, yes, we've seen interactive
advertising and enhanced television done umpteen times now, but from what it sounds like (BizWeek was kind of vague --
we don't have a lot of specifics yet), TiVo's taking a slightly different approach by background-downloading and
storing ads in the system for viewing; this also lends to a new kind of choose your own adventure style ad
system that lets viewers pick how they want to be advertised to with spots that unfold depending on user input. The
irony here is that the first round of TiVo's interactive ads were apparently bought by Sony for the new Bravias they've been pimping so hard lately -- HDTVs that your
trusty old standard def DVR won't be able to take full advantage of. Still, if you want to learn more about Sony's new
TVs, their TiVo commercial will apparently have twelve different endings to choose from.[Via TechDirt]

Ummm.. Hello?? Does anyone else find it weird that a service many pay for for the sole purpose of being able to get past commercials is thinking of NEW and ENHANCED ways of making sure we see COMMERCIALS?!?!?! WTF? Those little banners that pop up during car ads are annoying enough. CUT IT OUT, TiVo!
However, I will admit that I sometimes use the ones that pop up asking if I'd like to record a show while it's showing me THAT shows commercial. That just makes good TiVo-sense. ANYWAY, I'm still pissed! >:

I think this is a cool idea, TiVo lets you skip commercials but in my opinion not all commercials are bad and i think TiVo is pushing tv advertising to be something more then what its been for so many years. I love comedy commercials and i think interactive commercials where you can choose the ending is a cool idea.

If this is anything like the old Choose Your Own Adventure books, 11 of those endings probably result in some horrific death...

Can anybody picture a giant flashing "click here to enlarge your penis" ad every time you skip past a pizza hut commercial?

so umm.... oh yeah, trying to remember why is it that people are 'paying' for tivo? Engadget should hold a contest on who can guess when they go belly up and give out a free phone to the winner.

TIVO stop cow-towing to Hollywood. Damn! Customers pay for Cable/Satalite and they pay for TIVO. So... TV is no longer FREE. With that... commercials are longer relevant in the respect of paying for Television. So knock it off!!
