Pics of BenQ's BW1000 3-in-1 Blu-ray burner
Finalized versions of Blu-ray hardware have been popping up all over the place lately, with Panasonic revealing the simple design of its DMP-BD10 player earlier this week, and now BenQ's BW1000 three-in-one burner shows up in both internal and external flavors, courtesy of AVING. In case you hadn't heard, the BW1000, or "Trio" (please don't sue, Palm, we promise we won't get confused), can read from/write to 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray discs, dual-layer DVD±R, and of course, the reliable old CD. Write speeds for BD-R and BD-RE discs are a bit pokey at 2x (but hey, what do you expect from new tech?), with DVDs clocking in at 12x (4x for DL, 8x/6x for DVD±RW), and CDs burning at a zippy 32x (24x for CD-RWs). Nothing new as far as pricing or availability goes, so just enjoy the pics, mkay?

A write speed of 2x on BD-Rs is actually quite fast. Taking into account that the write speed of an 16x DVD burner has a transfer rate of 21 Mb/s. A 2x Blu-ray DVD burner can write at 108 MB/s. So, "pokey?" I think not.

Try again. A magnetic SATA hard drive can't right at 108 "Megabytes" per second. You're figures are WAY off.

any word on the price for this thing, i want one, dont know why, but i do. let the drool start running...and it is nice and shiny too.

I think you mean mega-bits. Last I saw, 1x speed is supposed to be basic 8x-12x DVD burning speeds. So we all can assume 2x BR will be faster.

This is getting real old here with everyone complaining about how slow 2x Blue-Ray, I mean come on, is 72Mbps really that bad?
none @ Apr 14th 2006 12:33PM
Actually, 1X Bluray has a data transfer rate of 36 Mbps, and 1x DVD has a data trasfter rate of 11.08Mbps (http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/). So, a 2x Bluray write speed (72Mbps) is not faster than a 16x DVD write speed (~176Mbps).

I don't understand why ppl are complaining. When we (family) first got our DVD player back in 1996 I think it had a read speed of 2x. The first dvd burner I bought had a write speed of 2x I think. I don't understand why people are expecing 987491847x @ launch.
hmurchison @ Apr 14th 2006 12:49PM
Blu Ray supports 2x recording. 1x= 36Mbps.
Thus we have a max of 72Mbps recording at 2x speeds. This correlates to 8MBps write speeds. This is why a 25GB disc takes 20 something minutes to write and a 50GB discs takes 40 something minutes. Blu Ray is indeed pokey.

My mom's old Dodge Dart was really fast!

because now a days poeple want everything to come at its max even went launch for the first time and I think thats really stupid.

What? No DVD-RAM functionality? Too bad, I'll have to just stick with my first gut feeling and keep the Panasonic Blu-ray I have. Does all BD-R/RE DVDR/RW/DL/RAM CD-R/RW BAM! Everything.

I remember buying a 2x cd burner when they were first out, big mistake because faster ones were out right after.

Hey, I still remember when the days of 2x CD read speeds... this was years before consumers could even burn discs. These speeds match up almost exactly to the time it took to burn a complete disc when DVD burning came out (and probably the same for CD burning, although I didn't get into burning until 8x speed). I'm going to do the same thing I did for DVD, just wait a couple years and it will be faster and work better (I hope Plextor releases a BD drive at some point, assuming the format doesn't die, I bought one of their CD burners 5 or so years ago and one of their DVD burners a couple years back because they are the best, IMO, would like to keep hope alive!).
Ugh, I'm still waiting for the DVD Forum to get their act together and get DVD-R DL rolling. I refuse to use +R DL but there is little choice atm (and before someone tries to "pwn meh hardc0re", I know DVD-R DL drives/firmware upgrades exist, but the media itself is very hard to find and is damn expensive at that). Maybe I'll just skip it all together and get my BD on o.0.

I'll say it once, i'll say it twice. "I won't buy first gen technology"

That's a really nice looking drive, very slick. Gotta start somewhere with this new tech, I waited until 4X dvd burners dropped to $200 before I got one. It will happen to these guys too. That's a lot of burnable storage space,.
