So apparently the
viliv
P1 personal media player is doing so well
in
the US, that the company has already announced plans to release their new model, the P2, Stateside as well. The P2
takes all the P1's multi-codec goodness (MPEG-1/2/4, H.264, DivX, WMV 7/8/9, XviD, MP3, WMA, OGG, AC-3, and WAV),
subtracts the iPod resemblance, and adds a 60GB option as well as an optional GPS receiver. Powered by a 400MHz AMD
processor, the P2 runs on Windows CE 5.0 and sports a large 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 widescreen LCD, and also can also act
as a USB 2.0 host device. Expect to see these for sale sometime in the middle of August, although pricing has yet to be
announced.
Can this (or the P1) be used to playback ebook formats such as pdf, html, doc, txt? How readable is the screen if so?
umm.. i might actually have to get one of these... depending on the price, of course
wonder if the US version will have that DMB icon greyed-out :P
Looks cool... very nice specs... It also will have a touch screen. See the following for more info and some more pics: http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/03/viliv_p2_portable_media_player.html
With wireless and Linux this would be perfect. `hybrid of Nokia 770 and UMPC, with none of the respective products flaws in my opinion.
So apparently the viliv P1 personal media player is doing so well in the US ?_?
Really? In what remote corner of the U.S. are you refering to???
it's my dream come to life
Where did this story come from?
This is a nice feature set. I had high-hopes for the first one but it was a bit too big with an interface too cumbersome. I hope they fix a lot of the issues. I could be a fan real-quick!
definitely... this is going to be my next baby.
Awesome. If only they could do ~100gb range under $500. I would definitely get that.
I've been using my viliv P1 for a couple weeks now, and once you get used to its quirks, its a pretty awesome device. Definately for early-adopters, and as such will never reach the same market as the iPod. I skipped over the iPod and went straight for the Archos gmini400, so I'm obviously looking out for something more than what Apple can offer. The biggest problem is the US distributor. It took almost a month and several irritated e-mails to get my unit, which was rushed out to me, and I believe is actually a Korean domestic model.

MICROSFT VS APPLE
*************************************
My faith in apple has disappeared!!
FORGET APPLE AND GET A PC WITH WINDOWS, JUST BUY MORE MEMORY AND MAKE SURE U HAVE A DECENT GRAPHICS CARD, (will still cost less than a mac!!and for the same price as a mac will run better, even for graphics and videos.)
all we pay for is the design!!!
apple have a history of cover up problems with their machines, just look at all the people with problems with the powerbook, macbooks, and ibooks!!!
** GOOGLE Search "logic board" with "G3", "G4" and see all these people with mac problems.**
If this was a car, u would get a letter in the post calling a recall, if it was windows they fix it with an update...apple, well leave it to us to figure it out and if u get the problem sooner than any 3yr extension replacement program, then great, but any time after that....GOOD LUCK
TO END
if u get an apple machine expect only about only 3yrs of bliss at most if you lucky, just look look at all the people with ibooks G3, which have missed and boat and stuck with a null computer that looks pretty and nothing else
i agree '??', this media player IS nice...
keep on topic, dumbass
Brilliant, just don't plan on watching any movies that are longer than 2 hours, your batteries will run out. :-/
I got my viliv P-1 20gb Nov 2005 directly from yukyung. Strangely, my p-1 has "excitement unlimited" and not "unlimited excitement" on the front. (I believe it is a pre-production sample, however, it works fine). I agree with #9 the p-1 has its quirks, but its the best portable video player Ive ever used. It plays almost every video file. Yes, the e-store has its problems. I just cancelled my order because they were so slow to ship. The new firmware has just been released (2.4) and is available on the myviliv Korean site. There are no english release notes or instructions. http://www.myviliv.com/include/download.asp?savedir=C:WebServicesmyviliv_com_newfileshelp6&file=viliv$$P1_viliv_Image_ver$$2.4.exe
freepimpc: You mentioned you have a P1. Does the P1 support .srt/.sub/.idx subtitle files for softsubs? That feature is extremely important to me, and I won't get a PMP if there isn't that feature.
I've never tried it, but supposedly the P1 does support srt and smi files.
Oh and #14 --- I installed the 2.4 update. It killed my video output, so I went back to the 2.2.
Hello my friends, this does indeed look very promising. Are there any weblinks of where to order one of these items. Is there mult-language options? and how many different languages?
Depending on the battery life and the cost I may end up getting one of these. All my friends have iPods but I don't want one. Also I have a ton of videos that I would put on there.
Wow...I so want one NOW !
The viliv seems to only support .smi subtitle files. Elninyo you are correct. The tv out works fine for 1 second after connection and then goes dark. I compared the old and new pmpset.ini files and noticed that they added some new parameters (tv_bright, tv_contrast, tv_saturation) I assume these are new tv out display settings, however, they are all set to 0, lol. Plus, the seem to have forgotten to add this to the "settings" menu.(i.e. you can't adjust the settings via the menu). also, if you edit the .ini file and reboot the unit, your changes get overwritten from memory. lol.
Anyone else have a viliv p-1 with "excitement unlimited" and not "unlimited excitement" on the front?
Nope. But I have both written on my boxers! ;-)
Is it just me or does that viliv logo just look a lot like the viiv logo from Intel? At first glance, I thought this was an Intel viiv product.
will it support RAW files?
Hey freepimpc, please contact me... several options on my website.
How to fix the viliv 2.4 firmware TV out issue:
1. Update your viliv to firmware version 2.4.
2. After the update, navigate to the movie folder and hover over a movie file. (do not play it yet).
3. Connect the viliv to your TV. (The TV screen will be very dark, but you can still see some outlines.)
4. Press the center menu button to play the movie file you where hovering over before. (If you had previously played the file, you may be asked to "play continuously?", just choose "yes")
5. With the movie playing, press the right ">" menu button to display the movie menu controls. (You should be able to see the menu controls clearly, as they are not affected by the TV out settings).
6. Scroll the movie menu until you see the brightness control icon (looks like a star), select it and adjust the settings to about 7. You should now be able to see the movie on your TV. Repeat the same for the saturation and contrast settings. (they are located directly below the brightness icon)
Your TV out settings should now be ok, even after you reboot the viliv.
the RAW file-format isn't supported by Windows, products like Premiere & Photoshop support it.
laze.
