New Xbox 360 CPU should run cooler

Even though we've been able to
keep our Xbox 360 from overheating by slapping on a Nyko Intercooler and dangling the power brick out a window,
360-lovers who can't take the heat will be happy to learn of Microsoft's plans to release a cooler-running 'box next
year. Although the CPU upgrade, which takes advantage of a 65-nanometer manufacturing technique, may not be a direct
response to what the company has said are
only sporadic reports of overheating, the end result will be less heat dissipation due to lower power consumption.
Like the current chips manufactured using 90-nanometer technology, the new CPUs will be produced by both developer IBM
and OEM Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, and are not expected to offer significantly improved performance, to
ensure compatibility with current titles.[Via Joystiq]
if you get a mini refrigerator and keep your xbox 360 on it and your power brick on the side of it it will almost never get hot enough to freeze or u could get the intercooler but they are on the third generation of xbox 360s the ones that have been out for the last month or two and they arent having many problems.

I got one of the newer XBOX 360s, the ones that are available at nearly any Best Buy. I've played for hours without a power failure or even an overheated power supply. (Mine is actually between the TV cabinet and a wall, so ventilation is very limited). In fact, the powoer supply doesn't even get that hot. The 360 is in a small shelf that barely clears the 360 when it is horizontal, and has about 3" on the left, right, and rear of the 360. Seems like the inital bugs and whatnot are gone. (Knock on wood.)
Interesting that the first xbox never received an update. Up to its last days it was still produced with a 180 nm "Coppermine" core cpu.
What about the people, like me, who already bought a 360? Will we have to go out and spend another $400 to get a cooler system?
Sigh, you video gamers and your console wars... Why not do what I do and play games that won't overheat, melt, explode, etc. Meaning pen and paper shit. I just dug up an old Steve Jacson game and have spent about a week trying to create a scenario, all the while never having to worry about my pencil overheating due to overuse. In fact, I've only spent about 5 bucks on this game, and when it's all ready, it'll provied countless hours of entertainment. Let's get back to they way games were meant to be played!
Who cares about the the temp of the unit, I just want the cd/dvd drive to stop sounding like a helicopter is landing in my living room...
Just crank down the AC. Sure you need a jacket while you play, but no problems when you run an XBOX in a 60 degree room.
It's almost embarassing, I'm saddened and afraid to call myself a gamer. The replies of some of the people around here is downright scary. While I do enjoy reading them, it's frightening at the same time. It's a console people!!!! A CONSOLE!!!!! THE 360 IS A CONSOLE!!!! THE PS3 WILL BE A CONSOLE!!!! WHY DO YOU PEOPLE GIVE SUCH A FUCK!?!?!?! They're not the second coming, they're not going to get you laid, they're not going to help you get out of school, they will not socialize for you, they will not help you get outside, they will not help you live a normal life, and they certainly won't be there to comfort you, when you realize you don't have a life!!
I pretty happy with my 360. I have not had any problems yet, it may be due to having one of the more recently produced models. Props to MS for looking to make the 360 even better, especially from a componenet and reliabiliy standpoint.
john just think all of the games xbox 360 has released up until now have not used up anywhere near the potential of even a single core of the triple core processor and they are funner then the ps3 games that will be out. its sad if u believe sonys cgi videos and hype while the 360 shows actual in game stuff. and i dont wanna hear that you wont play resident evil 5 or ninja gaiden 2 when they are 360 exclusive.
To be honest, I'm going to buy all of the Next-Gen consoles as I am a GAMER and always will be.
Titles make the console, not the heat!
All consoles have their own defineing titles - Zero Wing, Pong, Sonic, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Halo 2, GTA.
What is everyone arguing over? I like power & heat. Stick my Xbox in a sink - instant sauna. Put a PS3 in one and you get the same!

This is exactly why I did not purchase an xbox at launch, I thought it was public knowledge they were moving to a 65nm processor. I figured by the time it happened there would be a price drop as well which is the main reason behind me not buying one yet.

Man, there sure are a lot of 12yr olds posting on these comments. A wise, albeit middle-aged, man once said, "Get a Life!", and I would encourage most of you to take that sage advice.
Frankly, I don't care who manufactures my console, Sony, MS, Volkwagen, Dairy Queen, who cares?? As long as the damn thing pumps out some sweet eye candy, innovative game play and sports a few bells and whistles.
I'm enjoying my 360 so far. There's a few really stand-out titles, and there's plenty of crap ones too. But it's early days, so I'm patient enough to wait for the killer titles in a couple of years. When the PS3 comes out, I'll mostly likely get one of those too. I mean, why limit yourself to just one brand?

I dont believe that the PS3 will be any cooler than the Xbox 360. The fact there is so much more processing power makes me question whether such as device can keep cool.
Well at least those of you who have an xbox 360 can rejoice! You will surely get a free replacement for your defective unit...

I think it's great that Microsoft is finally able to do things like this.
With Xbox, Microsoft was at the mercy of Intel and nVidia, so there was no way they could improve manufacturing efficiencies in any meaningful way. But yet they had to reduce prices to keep up with the competition. I'm sure that's a huge reason why they lost so much money with Xbox.
Any attempt to improve cooling system of gaming is welcome. This is a serious problem for hardcore gamers and their number is not few. on the other hand, this number is growing in Asian countries.
Listen to you guys, you're getting worked up over nothing. This is not bad news if you already have a working 360. If you 360 is currently working and has had no problems, then you don't need the updated chip. I don't understand what all of the fuss is about on here...I mean I could understand the uproar if the chip itself could process more instructions per cycle and munch mathematical formulas faster, but the fact of the matter is it's not happening...the whole idea behind this newer chip is in the hopes of lowering the production of defective units. Period. Don't think that if you buy a 360 today that you are going to have an obsolete system next year, this is not the case. A healthy 360 does not need the new chip, but if you feel like spending more money and helping out my favorite company, feel free to do so.
As for the Sony fan boys in here...yeah I choose not to be an idiot for sony. The cell is going to run hella hot fresh out of the box. With a processor of that calibur (equivalent to the 360) you are bound to have heat issues. Not to mention the heat from the RSX chip...let's just put it this way to be fair. The PS3 is going to have just as many problems (if not more, considering all of the new untested hardware) as the 360 did around launch time. Period

I just wanted to thank everybody for some fun reading while I was eating. I am just amazed that folks can possibly be upset about this. Look, the bottom line, as some previous posters have alluded to, is that the new chip production process will cost less per unit. The actual difference in heat produced will be relatively small. While I'm not disputing the possibility that there were some manufacturing defects in some of the 360 units (there has never been a mass produced item in history that did not have problems with some units) in every case that I have personally investigated (10 different friends with supposed over-heating issues) I found the cause to be user error. I received mine on launch day and I have put it through every possible stress test including leaving it on with a game running for over 12 hours. I have had zero problems and I have been able to correct my friend’s problems by proper setup of the device. Again, there may be some defective units, but this over-heating issue has been blown way out of proportion. I am quite happy with my 360 and I have no problems with MS trying to improve an already great product. I am not a fan boy in anyway shape or form and I would have bought a PS3 had it been out before the 360. I'll still buy one eventually, but I'll probably wait until there is an exclusive game that I really have to play before I get one. I really feel sorry for anybody waiting for a PS3. You’re missing out, but hey, it’s a free country.
Wow it is amazing how the CEO's of a corporation can create such an intese marketing and promotinal strategy mix to make a bunch of 14 to 24 year old boys fight over various processesors and internal hardware of various systems. You boys act like its East verus West in the late 90's in hip hop music culture. Every system has its advantages and disadvantages. Xbox has the best overall marketing strategy in that it can produce a product and pretty much sell it at cost with having no real affects on the companies financial state. Just think that the richest man alive (Bill Gates) is the sole creator of your Xbox system. He pretty much designed it, speaking in theory. His money and his creation of the windows operating system. So congrats on buying a video gamming system created by Bill Gates, Yes im sure there is an over heating problem with a few units. This isn't a compnay that runs a Six Sigma production strategy. But when these new 360's come out in 07 how will I know I'm getting a new one and not the older version?
Well, I just bought one recently, and it does locku p from overheating. I've read many of the posts, and frankly, it amazes me that some make idiotic statements defending MS for rushing this incubator to market.
I will never buy another console from MS and this one will go on EBay as soon as the PS3 is released.
