Dell's XPS M1710 power laptop review roundup
Yeah, we'll fess, for the fastest laptop, like, ever, the M1710 got kind of a poor showing on
getting itself reviewed. Seriously, with speed like that we kind of expected the writeups to pour out within minutes --
no speed bottlenecks to emcumber slowish tech journos. But those who did get their hands on an M1710 were pretty
unanimous about it; the thing's freaking fast. We'll show you what we got if you're thinking about plunking down four
grand (and as always, leave reviews we may have missed in comments so we can add 'em).Read - Laptop Magazine

The thing has got a pour showing because people seem to think that dell became the largest manufacturer of personal computers in the world by selling people complete crap. See a lot of "techies" seem to think millions and millions of people are idiots and can't determine if a company sells decent products or not.
I was surprised when the XPS wasn't the first Dell laptop to get the Core Duo implemented. I mean, despite all that new redesign crap (everything looks except the back of the LCD looks horrible compared to M170), it shouldn't have taken them this long.
Clearly Dell has raised the computing bar with the XPS M1710. The performance testing results in the Notebook review were amazing.
After reading the reviews I would almost buy one. I just don't like laptops and would rather save a few bucks and get the desktop version.
Awesome... in any event. Thank you Dell for bringing us the fastest system on the planet! Now, how about bring out some Dell UMPC's! That is the size laptop I'd be interested in buying!
One of my favorite places, AnandTech, has a review.

I haven't had time to read through it yet, but they are always very thorough. (For example, after 13 pages of review they say, "This is by no means a complete review, and we will have a follow-up article looking at some specific details, but our first impression is definitely favorable.")
They seem to like it, fastest laptop at the moment, and best gaming laptop ever. It better be, for that price.
yep...Mad Cow beat me to it..Anand had review for few days now...they like it
For that kind of money you could by a MacBook Pro!
... with a smaller lcd and a much slower graphics card.
the line between pc's and notebooks is blurred more and more these days. I've had 2 laptops in the last 4 years, and my current E1505 dell is a great laptop. I use it more and more (non gammer). From the way the industry is going, it looks like DIY laptops are beginning to pick up. It will be nice to be able to upgrade (to some extent) laptops, instead of just trading/selling them for something better. When my current PC needs to be replaced, I will seriously consider dumping it for a laptop, since it will take up a LOT less room than my box (2.8ghz HT 4 bay tower with water cooling)
"For that kind of money you could by a MacBook Pro!"
dell usually has 30-40% off coupon on its website all the time. if you wait till the end of a quarter for dell you can probably get a great deal.
"See a lot of "techies" seem to think millions and millions of people are idiots and can't determine if a company sells decent products or not."
LOL... that's a good one. Some 'techies' just like to say the opposite of other people because it's the easiest way to look like you have an opinion and taste.
To stick to the subject, here is another review:

PS: If you compare this laptop to a 2.5 lbs computer you have no clue what it is for and how the laptop market is segmented.
Very true. This notebook is a Desktop Replacement. Its not there for light weight transport. But in my opinion, 8lbs is not as heavy as people make it out to be... people cling to that fact because its about the only thing they can flaw this laptop for!
Ordered mine last week, sure be here by next friday. I'm very interested in seeing what the media-direct screen looks like...
the dell xps m1710 has the same cpu but has a much more power full gpu 512 vs 256 and also has a better screen 1920 x 1200 vs 1400 x1050 enough said.

(If I posted this twice, I apologize, refresh isn't helping) The M1710 is basically a Precision M90 with a different graphics card, different case, and a few toys thrown in for kicks. It feels like a Precision M90 and even has the docking port. It shares the Precision's keyboard and trackpad (except no third button). It has the magnesium casing, cools itself well, and doesn't feel like Inspirons felt for a while there--as in it doesn't feel cheap or junky. The weight balances well with the LCD open. Yes, it absolutely has insane performance value when you max it out. The screen is the only gamble, depending which one you get it is either super bright or super clean.. Other than that only drawback is bloatware if you purchase Media Center or buy through the home side. If you ask via small business, they will do a clean install and even partition the HDD for you.
