Sidekick III shows up on the FCC

As soon as a Sharp-made handset shows up on the FCC with a whole bunch of confidentiality-request paperwork affixed, you know it's gonna be good. Sidekick fans, feast your eyes on the real deal up in the grill (yep, all those pics were legit), and the um, naked, battery-less tail end of the Sidekick III (model PV200). Can't be long now, can it? And yes, this confirms pretty much much of the info we'd already heard about the forthcoming device: 1.3 megapixel camera, expandable memory (miniSD), and Bluetooth.

#19 - They did get the confidentiality they requested. They asked for all the documents they can and thats what they got. The documents we can see are not asked for and can't be asked for either.

My roomate has been a SK fanboy since the b/w sk days. But, when I got my 650 he had to acknowledge the fact that the treo was better. I told him to hold off because the SK3 is coming out. I told him if it does not have features I stated in post#9, then get a treo. BTW, I have a 650 unlocked with T-Mo. I have mobitv. I watch it with no problems. I actually like the way the SK3 looks but if it lacks features then I won't be wasting my upgrade. Is the treo perfect...hell no. If the good ol' boys at Palm decide to drop that super-firmware update, the Treo will be damn near perfect.

/(�_`)It saddens me to see that people still don't take advantage of 3G services. Really, it seems that Japan is the only country where people take full advantage of 3G- video, downloadable music, and all. I really think it's because people with viewpoints like #43's keep European phone makers from adapting their phones to take advantage of 3G. For example, a Japanese phone will have a nice, large screen for watching video and decent sound quality for MP3s. Then again, if Euro providers priced their goods reasonably like Chinese providers- service plans starting at $5 a month for 400 minutes and ringtones at 25� each, then maybe people would buy ringtones and watch streaming video. The providers in the West are too greedy- if the US adopts Asian culture, then maybe we'll see prices drop.

Well, I'm 15 and I have a Treo 650 and the reason I wont get a TMobile Sidekick is because the TM network sucks! i have a lot of friends who had sk and switched to cingular to get 650's their a lot better and a lot nicer, and + U got the better network! Bring it on TMobile

I agree with Necro, but I do have a friend with a treo and he's 15. Cept its more for taking pictures of tests I think. :-( The thing is cingular and t-mobile have the same network, when you can't get t-mobile your phone uses cingular, and vice versa, so I love to see people argue that.

I had the BWSK, SK1, and SK2. Then I said to hell with T-Mo when they had all those SK data outages and got a Treo 650 on Cing, and since the Treo 700w came out on Verizon, I've had that.

SK is slowwwww and is ONLY good for AIM if you are in a T-Mo coverage area (very hard to find).

Treo 700w - direct push email while switching from listening to XM, Sirus, and watching movies and Tivo'd shows streaming from Orb, and chatting on AIM and MSN messenger.

EDGE also sucks. Have fun with that while EVDO is blazing past DSL speeds.

As for the SK3 it almost looks like they were inspired by the PSP. I wonder if the shoulder buttons will be as tactile? Whats with the chrome? So 1980 Sony.

Don't just compare features. The Treo has more features, but the SK's OS is more stable and usable. Buy what you prefer, I don't understand the silly need to debate every article posted on this otherwise great site.

I also just got an MDA after my sk2 bit the dust hard. The MDA is way more flexible, and has better hardware specs (wifi, edge) for starters). That said, windows mobile kind of blows for so many reasons that are too long to list here. The sidekick, like somebody above said, is mac-like in it's hardware/software integration. It's a very elegantly designed package, and comparing stock out of the box software, the sidekick pretty much kills the MDA. OTOH, the MDA has better and faster browsing, and if you don't like the stock software, you can install anything you want (opera, skype, and a bunch of media players comes to mind). I love having an RSS reader on it. The MDA has crashed more times in 3 weeks than my SK did in 1.5 years. The MDA's audio quality is better than the SK2, but the reception is worse (if that's possible). So there's ups and downs to both. The basic judgement is this: the SK is an elegantly designed very usable, reliable, semi-smartphone that's locked tight by T-MO (unfortunately). The MDA is very powerful and flexible, but lacking in usability and phone reception.

I'm definitely going to be checking out the SK3 when it's launched and we'll see if the MDA sticks around. I'm getting VERY used to the WIFI. Edge is decent, but coverage is spotty and seems to drop in and out.

Just so I'm clear here, the top image on this post is one of the previous "leaked" photos, right? All that we know from the FCC filing is that the SK3 exists, it has Bluetooth, a memory card, and a 1.3 MP camera, and that the inside looks like the bottom photo.

OK everyone... honestly ... whoever is complaining about the SIZE of the sidekick III... HAS NOTHING to base these dumbass complaints of it being BIG or as big as the PSP. Look at the SIM and mini SD slots on the back of the device... that shows you how small the sidekick III really is!
Also... I have been a sidekick user since the sikick 1 was out (Early 2003) and i recently had my SK2 stolen. Tmobile.com didnt have any SK2's available to sell... SO i purchased the Tmobile MDA... and guess what. I returned it to tmobile with a week of me using it. Why?? Because i missed the ease of the sidekick 2. Dont get me wrong.. the MDA = awesomeness!! but i dont use the OUTLOOK EMAIL, THE WORD FUNCTION, OR THE EXCEL.. blah blah. haha. the sidekick III is going to kick soooo much a*s it's not even funny!! So let's hope for a June - August 2006 release, and lets not judge the sidekick III until we all have tried it out!

I have always liked the SideKick. Well since I got one for christmas about three years ago (god has it been that long?)anyways, its a wonderful phone. It does (contrary to people posting on the website might mistakingly believe) have an open platform. The platform on the sidekick for app dev is actually pretty good. Its java based, and it now conforms to the J2ME spec (which is a pretty standard spec). If you are an app developer, then you will actually appreciate how easy it is to make a networked application. YES it sucks how you have to pass it through TMos (or suncom or fido's ) catalog, but as an app dev this is not really a barier to entry. If you want an easy way to sell your cool new application to many many people, having it sit right there on catalog is the best way. As a user, yes it sucks that there are few (ok if any) really decent free apps on the sidekick, but get over it. You can get a blackberry, and the data coverage on it is comparible (in price) to a sidekick. They also feature a java platform for app dev, and they have a full querty keyboard (on the older ones that is, the new one features two letters/key). It has been my experience that the blackberry is not as comfortable as a sidekick to user, but it does feature a better distribution platform for open source software (you can download right to it).

I have a SKII now, and I love it (though admitidly I use the internet less frequently now that I sport a Honda Shadow VLX 600 Motorcycle). The browser is handy and full featured. I can type at about 70% of the speed on it than I can on a regular computer keyboard. It also sports two very well implemented IM programs, as well it features some decent games, and a decent ringer (making it an optimal alarm clock). Yeah, the fact that the mailbox is limited to 6MB sucks, and it also sucks that you cannot (easily) sync with Outlook (I mean Exchange Server actually), but (as others have pointed out) it isnt targeted as a business platform (too bad because this kicks the pants off of a blackberry). Another user pointed out that it makes no sense to compare phones. Yes, thats true. If you are a business user, and you NEED access to exchange (more than just POP3) then you have two choices, Palm or Blackberry (or windows mobile device), but Sidekick won't do it for you. If you are like me, and you are using it for personal use, and some mild professional work, then its your phone. I think the MP3 functionality of other phones is useless (screww it , I have an iPod, what is a phone gonna do that an iPod can't? ) Video is dumb on a phone, and pictures are equally useless (but I have to say that I have taken quite a few with the SK even though it is only a 640x480 cam).

Whatever you feel. I don't care. I am gonna get a SKIII because I am a sucker for these devices :)

And I like the guy who comparred it to a mac. I wonder if he/she knows that Steve Wozniak is on the board over there at Danger :)

I am really looking forward to the SK3. I really do not care if it supports fancy ringtones, as they annoy me anyways. I use vibrate or a basic *ring ring*. What I am more interested in, is the Bluetooth capability for the headset and internet gateway with your laptop. Camera quality, memory card and such are all fluff and neat, but the usability for me is key. Being a Mac user, the new Treo's (newer than 650) have gone to MS, as is the MDA which makes it a bear to come up with any good communication link between the Mac and the SK - You have MissingSync which is great, but now with bluetooth, I hope the integration has improved.

The Keyboard - you can't beat it. Granted it's still cumbersome, but compared to the smaller treo keyboards or iTap styles, this has anything else beat hands down. - The apps, well. I use it for IM, SSH, E-mail and WWW and basic productivity functions. I don't really care who makes the apps, or what platform it runs on, as long as it's compatible with what I use on a day to day basis.

I guess in the end, we will all have different opinions on what the device should have on it, and if we all got everything we wanted, it would be a brick.. I'm all for thinning the pockets, but if you want an mp3 player, get an iPod, if you want a gaming system, get a PSP, if you want a phone that handles your business needs that is slick and turns heads, get a SK..

The Sidekick 3 is a MUST HAVE!!!! I also had my Sidekick 2 stolen. My father got me a MDA but stupid me being me, I broke it. He's planning on fixing it then keeping it. What am I left with? A Sidekick 3 apparantly. Hopefully, he'll do this by my birthday coming up. And I am NOT one of those people who are in it cuz it looks cute. I'ma email freak, IM, AND AN MP3 PLAYER!?!?!?! C'mon, ya know people were gonna get it cuza that. Although the keybard WAS better on the Sidekick 2, the new one just looks hard. That MP3 player was just a bonus making MY life easier, and MANY people want it more. I personally missed the Sidekick 2 also. I looove the MDA, TRUST ME, but the Sidekick WAS easier to use even though it lack many features the MDA is equipped with. Such as the touch screen, u can watch music videoes, record videoes, easy access to the internet, easy browsing and quicker page downloading. Hopefully, Danger wil make a Sidekick 4 with at least a couple of these features. My best friend, has a Sidekick 2 also, a Juicy Cuolture one she won from a magazine contest. That's just another person who has and cherishes the sidekick family. I hope to soon have the Sidekick 3 and I will cherish it also!

I'm a lifer...I've had the SK1 2 and now I have the SK3 and I LOVE IT...It's smaller, sleeker and the trackball is a nice feature. The Treo is for business people the SK is geared towards the younger generation and they are making a killing in that market. The SK3 plays mp3's and the screen resolution is so much better than the 2. It's just an all around better device. It also has the javascript and the web browser is like using DSL. I LOVE IT and I hope everyone gets it. The SK2 was not real upgrade but the SK3 is very well worth the time and money
