I have been working on a directional microphone using my ipod 1G 4GB and I suggest a pre-amplifier for your project in parallel to the audio input so you can connect a microphone to the ipod and use it as a high-quality recorder, using Rockbox. I'm currently working on a better pre-amp using op-amps and a high-pass filter.
