Iomega launches StorCenter 1TB wireless NAS

We've seen terabyte NAS boxes before. And we've seen wireless ones too. But Iomega may be one of the first companies to combine the two into a simple plug-and-play solution, with the company's 1TB StorCenter Wireless Network Storage device. The box includes gigabit Ethernet, two USB ports, 802.11g wireless networking, and four 250GB, 7200 RPM drives that can be set up in RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 5 configurations. The NAS has a suggested retail price of $899. Iomega has also launched a 500GB wired NAS, the StorCenter External Hard Drive, with a price of $499.

Sorry Iomega. I'm still pissed at you over zip drives. You could be giving these things away along with a porsche cayenne and I wouldnt take one with your name on it.
Time to change the name of your company. Something without a class action lawsuit attached to it.

That's pretty sweet if you ask me, I've been thinking about building a (couple) new file servers and this would be perfect for my needs!
but:
1) I hope it can run openbsd and/or rh fc5
2) Which hdd's are they sticking in there?
3) Where can I buy one without VAT ;)

"I'd rather get a Buffalo Terastation. $700 at Frys. For an extra $200, I'd buy a $60 Linksys WRT54G, hack it, then take the $140 left over and rent a girlfriend for the evening, since my network needs are now taken care of."

I could build a wireless NAS myself for much less then $900

Charging that much extra for wireless is a total ripoff.
The $500 price for the wired version is pretty good though.
I might get that if no one else comes out with a similar product.

Umm, wow, that's another dumb idea. Let's set up another wireless device so that other people can store kiddie porn on my hardware, even without a physical connection! Attempts at making secured and consumer-friendly WiFi have been quite unsuccessful so far; what makes Iomega think that such a storage system won't be compromised? I've heard the arugment a thousand times before: "Don't put sensitive data over the air." But how would every-day consumers understand that? How the hell do they figure out what a GPG private key does? What does "PKI" mean to them? They're still targets, and they probably will forever be.

I actually bought this.
Not too bad
The street price was under $500 for the 1T NAS. Advertised special - (instaRebate + mail in).
No problems so far.
Not using the WIFI using it wired.
Considered the WIFI kind of a gimic.
Also using Raid 5.
It is a noisy beast though.
I am wondering what is this running.
Also, I'm not sure as to the max size for a single file. The documentation is definitely geared at the home user (high level/sketchy).

POS. Don't touch it.

RMA'd once already. New one died too then suddenly came back to life. Only limited functionality when accessing from Vista.

**** If you put a lot of folder (let's say a 10GB music collection) then the web access interface will not let you browse to any folders (only times out). You also cannot type in any folder names.

That means, once you are loaded up, you cannot add users and give access, you can not add shared folders, you cannot set your media library folders....et al.

Also, printer sharing worked for about 5 days. After that, no matter how many restarts, plug in/out, reset to default settings etc I could never access the printer again.

Other problems with getting service....getting tired typing about this paperweight. Got burned by those crappy zip drives several years ago. Went against my better judgment buying IOMEGA again.

Will never make that mistake again.

There is a bug in the web interface. Once you get several thousands of files on the drive you can no longer use some critical features such as adding new shared. The problem is well documented and the cause is known, yet Iomega support has been totally unapologetic and unresponsive.

Add me to the 'never buy Iomega' again list. I've had zip drives, a Bernouli box, and now the 1Tb NAS unit from them and all were junk. The documentation is completely inadequate, if you happen to press the power button to turn of the unit for a second too long, it resets the unit to factory defaults and anything you've stored on it is inaccessable. Like the wireless idea? Well their latest firmware update removes that capability and can't be applied without re-formating(read lose your files). The unit is not accessible without their proprietary software which is buggy as best... almost unuseable is closer to the truth. Thanks Iomega for repaying my giving you one more chance by losing 180Gb of data. Never again.
