Wii know, wii feel the same way
Ryan: "Eh, I thought the iPod was a pretty stupid name too. We'll just have to wait and see."
Evan: "Just let me know when I can emulate the console on my phone."
Marc: "Why?"
Paul: "What do you want? Leave me alone! Can't you see I'm talking to Zelda right now?"
Ross: "Sometimes, even hardcore gamers need to stop and take a Wii."
...it's not looking like a home run for Nintendo marketing. Of course, the DS didn't get a lot of love at first, and in that case Nintendo clearly demonstrated that it's all about what you do with it. But with proponents of the console already facing an uphill battle in evangelizing the strange control scheme, Nintendo sure isn't helping out much.

#38: "You are what's wrong with the video-game industry."
Correction: Nintendo's marketing department is what's wrong with the gaming industry. That and the people who have so little imagination or creative drive that they resort to making the big-budget games of today.
As #43 mentioned, branding is a huge part of a product. Nintendo has simply shifted its target audience of consumers away from the mainstream in an effort to appeal to a much younger (and/or female) demographic. Sure, this is suicide on their part. Sure, most people will only mention the console as "The One Who Cannot Be Named" from now on. What's important, though, is that at the end of the day, they're satisfied with the product they've invested their hard work...and...their...um...
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm sorry, I couldn't even finish that! HAHA! The Revolution/Wii wasn't meant to compete with the other two consoles anyway it speaks for itself quite handily so I don't see what the fuss is even really about. As #38 also said, you were going to buy an Xbox 360 (or PlayStation 3) anyway. Who knows, we might someday even see Nintendo licensing a Mario game for the Xbox or PlayStation in a desperate bid to start earning money again and pay their taxes.

I did. It took forever to load the contact page but I did.
petition Nintendo! They won't sell as many with Wii as the name. And they're a company, they want to sell stuff.
Tell them to bring back the Revolution!!
I laugh at the people who aren't getting this system just because of the name. Your loss I suppose.
And the "Nintendo is doomed" "Things are looking bad for Nintendo comments" are funny too. Nintendo has everyone talking about it, so they're getting their system known across the globe.
By the way, Nintendo of Japan didn't decide on the name. It was a global effort and was up in the air for about a year while they were thinking of other names.
Well, at first I thought "Wow, that's just a pretty dumb name" but as I think about it, it would have been very difficult for Nintendo to get the trademark of "Revolution" I guess it will take so time to get used to.
I beleive the real reason behind the name change away from Revolution to ANYTHING else (I have no comment on WII) is due to the 4th largest economy and fastest growing economy in the world: China.
I can't imagine that a Japanese company would have had access to the market with a product called REVOLUTION. It just wouldn't fly in the eyes of the Government there.
"but anyone who is going to make a decision on what console to buy based on its NAME is an idiot."
And even though they're idiots, they're still people that might have bought the console, and put money in Nintendo's pockets, and now aren't. I love all the fanboys acting like they are the majority- the people who were going to buy it anyway, no matter what it's marketed like.
Even if you don't agree with them, some people's decisions do come down to image, lifestyle, and branding. Sorry this ain't your utopia, where we all jack with our Wiis all day and say "it doesn't matter what it's called, and if you buy it based on the name or not you're an idiot"
I am now going to make a console called Mii
#96: "Nintendo has everyone talking about it, so they're getting their system known across the globe."
You're exactly right. They're not, however, going to get it *bought* across the globe with that name.
"By the way, Nintendo of Japan didn't decide on the name. It was a global effort and was up in the air for about a year while they were thinking of other names."
What do all you guys want to bet on ALL of those other names having been better and possibly more suitable than Wii? :)
I am so glad now that I have a 360, especially after reading all this crap on the Wii forums.
LOL
Nintendo Sucks Ass as usual.
does anyone else think that 'playstation' is the worst console name of all time?
#37 - you are a fanboy.
Watching all the fanboys SCRAMBLE to stick up for this lame decision is getting comical.
Own up to it fanboys: the name is lame.
I'll still buy it if it is as cheap as they are touting it will be. From a gaming standpoint - I couldn't care less about the name.
But from all other standpoints: CMON! The name really is dumb. I get that the japanese may like it, but their bread and butter so to speak, is the US - and they should have known better.
@ #102
I'm curious as to what other names were in the air.
@ #103
lol.. fanboy. You're judging a system on the name and totally ignoring what the system can do. Whether it be a flop or an amazing show for Nintendo at E3, we'll just have to wait. But I bet you're hoping for a new Grand Theft Auto for the 360.
@ #104
I dunno, the Wonderswan was a pretty god-awful name. :P
touche, kevin. still, i think console names are usually pretty awful. they tend to either be too kiddie, or they reek of pr people trying way to be cool, which is why you end up with gameboy/playstation/wonderswan on one end of the spectrum, and xbox/genesis on the other.
Wii have all your base.
The console market is divided into three important groups.
1.) Nintendo = Kids & Teens
2.) Sony = Casual mainstream gamer
3.) MicroSoft = Hardcore gamer
I thought it was a misspelling. Like Wi-Fi or something. I haven't bought a Nin console since Playstation came out. There has to be something for 8 year olds. Wii think this might me it. Still. step it up Tenindo.
Wii sucks - http://www.whywii.com
Wii rocks - http://www.wiiwhy.com
Never, ever, ever....
ever, ever.....
ever, ever, ever.....
doubt Miyamotosan.
'I won't buy it becuase of the name...'
Then don't. See folks, it's really THAT simple.
The world is full of people outside of the 18-24yr old male demographic. Just FULL of them.
FFS. It's not Wee, it's We. I highly doubt that people are thinking of pissing down the drain everytime they use the word 'we'. "Oh but, it's like wee, funny lmao lol omg xD"
'1.) Nintendo = Kids & Teens
2.) Sony = Casual mainstream gamer
3.) MicroSoft = Hardcore gamer'
Alright, this is the funniest thing I've read all day. Way funnier than all the lame Wii jokes.
Funny how it seems that about 99% of the people who play xbox online are 'Kids & Teens' who try to hold down the talk button and find glitches the entire time.
Wii are the Borg. Resistance is futile!
I could care less what the name is. I think that calling the next gen xbox the 360 is still retarded and its not like sony's coming up with anything new for theirs. If you don't buy something just because of the name you're just being stupid, look past that to see if it has anything that you want. Some bands have stupid names but we can look right past that and hear the music for what it is why not do the same with videogames and their consoles? I for one am excited for the wii regardless of the name. One thing that I have loved Nintendo for since the DS is it's interactivity. You don't just play those games u have to kinda guide some of them and stuff using the stylus, you don't just press a button like on the PSP you do more and to me it gets me more immersed in the game more often than not. Sony kinda did the same thing with the PS2 by coming out with the EyeToy and games like Guitar Hero and Karaoke Revolution. That is the main reason why I am still excited for the wii regardless of the name is because when I'm playing a game I won't just be pressing a button most of the time, I will be in control by doing more than just holding a stupid controller. Thats are my 2 cents take it or leave it.
This is ridiculous! Stop commenting on a move of significant branding brilliance. Free publicity within the media is the best reassurance of brand awareness. Further, the system will do fine no matter what they call it....again, it's about the games.
Now, onto the name. "Wii", I believe, will stand for WIRELESS INTERACTION or WIRELESS INDIVIDUAL INTERACTIVITY or WIRELESS INTERACTIVE INPUT. Look at the "W" and "i" within the mark. The "W" has a nice, fluid motion, like how one might move the controller. The "i" on the other hand, represents the look and shape of the input device (controller).
Everyone's first reaction is wrong. Think "Revolution", then create it visually and intellectually while virally communicating it through media. Brilliant.
Wii have all your base
I hate the name.
But I'm still gonna get it cuz I know I'll have a tonne of fun with the controller. New tech and major interactivity is what makes this the system to get. Besides, I plan on dropping the Wii part anyway and just call it the Nintendo.
Consumers are superficial, and it won't be surprising if a lotta people don't buy this based on the name. And if you think tweens will love the name... HA!
It looks promising, I can't wait to see what innovations they bring to the table.
guidetowii.com
I don't understand why they would name this 'Wii'. It doesn't seem universal to me. I though Revolution would be a more fitting name for Nintendo.

Yanno, Sony's got it right.
Playstation
Playstation 2 (PS2)
Playstation 3 (PS3)
Microsoft Jumped a bit, went from 1 to 360... but meh.
Nintendo... Super Nintendo was ok,
Nintendo 64... damn, lost it.
Nintendo GameCube....
Nintendo Wii....
Wheres the continuity? Nintendo... game console company gone the way of auto manufacturers... Gadzukes.
Why am I so flustered?!
Wii Wii, Wii Wii, sorry i was taking a pee pee. Hey I'm a fan of all consoles, but come on Nintendo and Nintendo's fans you have got to admit that name is retarded for a console. Only thing good is all the laughs you'll have saying "You want to see and/or play with my wii." Nintendo will lose millions in sales, and give doctors a boost in pay from the parents of children, simply cause parents will be taking their kids to the doctor thinking they got bladder problems cause they always want a Wii! I will have my revolution! I will buy a Wii and sctrach off any reference to Wii that is labeled on it and make my own labels that say revolution!
Everyone who says they're not gonna get one soley because of the name is an idiot.
"Dont you see?! If you consider yourself a "real gamer", Nintendo dont love you no more. Now save those pennies for the PS3, a real gamers gaming rig..."
Look up a couple things for me, Red Steel and Sadness. Two games that sound simply fantastic which will be rated atleast teen and available for the Wii. While Nintendo is vesting an interest in non-gamers, developers are still more than willing to accommodate, not all games will be cooking sims.
It's NOT just a name, and Nintendo should care about that. I'll still buy one because yeah, it doesn't change the system, but I won't lie: this pisses me off, and for a lot of people, it'll be the last straw. They just drove off a lot of customers. Maturity has nothing to do with. Quit acting like you're enlightened because you like the stupid-ass name they chose.
Hahaha, well I know my girlfriend won't buy one...
"But I already play with your wee..."
Stupid Nintendo, you lost a customer! Haha.
@#6 That is the same reason I now HAVE to buy it. Owning A console called Wii is the kind of wierd thing I do. IT has now become officially a personal goal for my personal self.
When I first saw the name and pondered, I assumed they were going call it the "dub2". Then I read the stuff about wee.
Would make some sense if they were expecting people to make up their own cool name to replace the stupid name.
Wow.....sure the name is gay I mean yeah Wii'd rather be saying names like Playstation, PS3, or 360 but the graphics are in better tune than the PS3 and the Wii does not blow up after three hours of continuous game play. If you hate the name so much call it the Nintendo Revolution. I'm sure Nintendo would not mind the change of name so that you could keep your g'nerd status. Finnaly, If you have such a problem with the Nintendo Wii/Nintendo Revolution and are choosing not to buy one then get off your lazy ass and go to your TV and play your PS2 Or 360 I'm sure that those of us that respect Nintendo in the leased bit are bored of your ironic, gay, and hatefull comments to another forum.
Sorry......quick change...."Finnaly, If you have such a problem with the Nintendo Wii/Nintendo Revolution and are choosing not to buy one then get off your lazy ass and go to your TV and play your PS2 Or 360 I'm sure that those of us that respect Nintendo in the leased bit are bored of your ironic, gay, and hatefull comments send them to another forum.
Rough Translation... Well, Wii doesn't actually mean anything... but ii means fun, so.... W-Fun... World of Fun? [shrugs]
NEEEEEEEERDS!
After a year of Wii power, we know Nintendo rulz! xD
I wonder how many of these people saying they wouldn't own it because of the name now own one?
