The wireless Xbox zombie controller hack
It looks more like an Xbox controller on critical-condition life support than anything else, but if you're going to do something so already frivolous as whip up a system to allow you to remote control your original Xbox from your PSP or DS, you might as well do it one of the most complicated ways possible -- mechanically (as opposed to electrically). Then again, this hack works not only on the Xbox controller, but just about any controller you can throw at it. Proceed at your own risk of though, we will not take responsibility if your innocent DIY project learns how to play and outgames you LEGO-gamebot style.

hahahah omg lol that is great!
It's really...mechanical. Lots of servos.
And I thought "remote" and "brute force" were mutually exclusive terms.
The only problem is that it doesnt hold the button down continusly it goes on and off every 250 ms
o shut up
I, for one, welcome our lego-ancestry mechanical game-playing overlords.
Wow, hacker snobbery at it's worst.
blah, you are well named, as you have missed the point entirely, and offer nothing.
Nothing but blah.
As for the project, I say go for it!
Sometimes the magic is in the creating.
If it works too, hey -BIG BONUS!!
Well done!
Wow - I'm in complete agreement with #6. This looks like it should be an entry to an electronics Rube Goldberg contest. This guy picked out possibly THE worst way to do this.
This is not a "hack". A hack is an elegant and intelligent approach and solution to a problem. This is neither elegant or intelligent, or really a solution.
It also costs a minimum of $150, for which you could easily buy several wireless controllers for every system mentioned.
I think people are forgetting what a "hack" really is. Unless this is meant to be absurd and funny, this is just complete bullshit.
Geez, blah, have a cry about it.
#6 So when will we be seeing your "better" version of this on Engadget?
#12 A hack is making something do something it wasn't designed to do.
God... why cant you people realize that this looks like a proof of concept project. All it looks like they were trying to do is set up this system. They couldnt have cared less about efficency. Hey if it takes all that crap and it works, it just EFFING WORKS. If you think you are soooo special harping on their project, go build a better one yourself. And if you cant, well shut up than.
blah I'm sure whoever made this is crying right now lol Damn he got owned xD
Ha ha! That is hillarious! Why waste your time doing that when you could program so many other things? Oh, well. That was good for a laugh!
blah- I don't know if you have too much stress at work, or your mother never hugged you, but you've sure got a lot of hate to vent on blogs.
As for the hack, it may be inefficient, but apparently it works. If you've hacked your PDA to control all of your IR and RF toys already, it would be cool to have control of your xbox in your pocket, too (especially if you've got all your DVDs on there).
I'd like to see it cleaned up a bit and mounted on a wall as a functional art piece. It would look cool and help to justify the cost. Maybe mount it on plexiglass and throw in some LEDs?...
#10: Are you crazy??? This practically DEFINES hack! From The Jargon File:
1. n. Originally, a quick job that produces what is needed, but not well.
2. n. An incredibly good, and perhaps very time-consuming, piece of work that produces exactly what is needed.
I'd say that fits this thing pretty well. Produces exactly what is needed, not well, perhaps very time-consuming, but, at least IMO, an incredibly good piece of work. I mean, it's friggin' brilliant! Might be stupid, but it's still brilliant :P
Seriously, who NEEDS it? Lets come up with something more useful and practical, its a complete mess and waste of time, ok ill give the maker a bit of creativity to start a begining, aslong as he can progress this project to something useful... if not than hes a daft twat with no life and daddy;s money to spend friviously!
Now something to come up with would be like a bot, such as lineage II , a bot that plays for you, collecting adena (money) and skills ect... while your sleeping or at work, but this is complete shit, I agree 100% with #6! END OF!
The wireless controllers are very convenient and they can be charged while playing.
What are the best games available at the launch? :)
great :)
These guys need to loose this idea.
and work more on that "string telephone modem" i have
been waiting fore!
/Kyndal
open up the controller and solder relay switches to the switches. now that would be probably the best way to automate but ill give you mad props for that
