We'll do our best to make this tonight's last PS3 post, but we really can't turn the lights out without sharing the first official pic of the Playstation 3 and its new, final, official controller. At least we think this is the final, official controller. And we think this is what the PS3 will really look like. But, hey, a lot can happen between now and November, so don't blame us if this pic ends up in the dustbin of history, when Sony unveils the
real PS3.

I think Sony is screwd with this PS3.
1 They are late.
2 Is to expensive.
But who knows what it will happen?

I guess it's good that Sony is giving me about 6 months to save up for the outrageous price tag. I wonder how much the games are going to cost for the PS3.

sc00tert00ter - because, you know, Splinter Cell, Killing Day, and Possession are all kiddie games that I'd want my 8 year-old cousin playing. Oh, and Red Steel? Naaah, it's not about gun and swordplay hacking up the Yakuza; they're kidding. It's really about sunshine, rainbows, and bunnies. The red? That's just the sunset. The steel is really the friendly neighbor Bob the Steel Miner.
Tony @ May 9th 2006 1:18AM
F--K the "spiderman" font.
I am not lying- if they do not change the design of the case DRASTICALLY, I will not allow that system to sit in my house.
SapphireShark @ May 9th 2006 1:18AM
I am a big supporter of Sony, but Sony still needs to work on their system. Sony needs to change the final console design, add a vibration function to the controller (and add a button to switch between the tilt and the vibration feature), and finally to switch the d-pad with the left analog stick.
tiuk @ May 9th 2006 1:34AM
Does anyone really care anymore? With all the new info released all the Sony fans seem to be keeping real quiet. I'm not really for any particular console, I'm mainly a PC gamer. Just making an observation.
someonewitheyes @ May 9th 2006 1:44AM
Just looking at the picture, the device appears to allow you to set the thing to on, or on/off... Is it just me or are they mixing the standard power switch logos?
steveR @ May 9th 2006 1:46AM
I'm soooo happy to hear this!! Finally sony is going to crash and burn. it was stupid of them to even think of releasing a console with Blu ray before the HD format war is even over.
sony would be screwd if HD DVD won the war but it doesnt matter for MS because the HDDVD drive is external and the games are regular DVD. hahahah fuck you sony.
and for all of you stupid noobs HDMI doesnt not have support for 1080p. the only way to get 1080p is to upconvert through the TV. hahaha fuck you sony again
and the new controller has no new inovation, all they did was take the old controller and put the pitch and yaw crap that it stole from nintendo in it and they removed the dual shock hahaha fuck you sony again!
and how they HELL are they gonna make any sort of money on this? Bluray = $EXPENSIVE$ 7core CPU = $EXPENSIVE$ plus all the other expensive crap in it must cost at least $1000 a unit. hahahahah fuck you sony again

it's just so funny reading the posts that are dissing the ps3. "oooooh, bad design, sony is screwed, i ain't going to buy one. long live xbox360." but when you go to their houses in a year or so, you'll see a ps3 sitting on their living room table. such a bunch of hypocrites. look, if you ain't got nothin' good to say, then don't talk at all.
i got myself an xbox 360 and i'm getting a ps3 as well so i can play games that are on the ps3 but are not on the 360 and vice versa. 'nuff said.
AppleFunatic @ May 9th 2006 2:03AM
That playstation logo button on the controller looks like a cheap knock-off of the Xbox 360 "ring of light".
I guess it is used to load up the cheap knock-off of the Xbox Live service.
PS1 was so innovative for its' time.
PS2 was sold on hyperbole and a cheap DVD player and we all fell for it. After that it just had its' huge userbase to keep it infront.
PS3 still has the hyperbole, but it ain't cheap at all, and the so-called exclusives so far are damn right embarrasing.
Virtua Fighter, Tekken and that lame Wipeout/F-Zero ripoff look like they've crawled off the dying PS2. i.e Jaggies everywhere! I suspect the 360 is going to b|tch slap them with the 2nd generation of titles coming out... alot cheaper and with a 3.5 million userbase head start.
Sega, Square and Namco can snub the 360 all they like, but Capcom has stuff like Lost Planet coming out for the 360 that makes these titles look like they are running off a PS1 emulator- they are that bad. I wonder when market forces are going to takeover and these companies have to come crawling to MS begging for a licence after the PS3 flops. LOL
Clark @ May 9th 2006 2:07AM
It is true that you can get a Blu-Ray player and a PS3 for less than a Blue-Ray player alone (assuming they're still selling for $800 in November). That'll be reason enough for some people to buy them...like PS2 and DVD.
I can't believe they crapped out on us and threw in the motion sensors! Into the old control no less!
And I agree: I totally HATE the SpiderMan font! I wish they'd bring back the PS9 advertisement campaign from the PS2 pre-launch days!
The future @ May 9th 2006 2:22AM
I loved how all the Sony fanboys jumped on the bandwagon when that butt ugly boomerang controller came out.
Fanboys defending the design as cutting edge, and ergonomic for long game play. Well, it looks like that butt ugly controller was a heck of a lot better than this POS. I like how Sony keeps everything a secret until the last minute, mainly because they don't innovate so what can they show off.
Blu Ray won't sell because HD DVD is just as good and costs half as much, but PS3 will sell however Sony will go bankrupt keeping it alive. Sony is already failing at keeping it's several division alive. They use great marketing to sell less than mediocre products.
Case in point, GT HD uses textures from PS2 GT4 and pre rendered HD graphics for demos.
MS has oodles of money, enough said.

it never stops..I swear it never ever stops. what do you people get out of hating these companies? somebody PLEASE explain to me what you get out of wishing Sony to hell and hoping for the PS3 to burn? the whole fanboyism thing is comical AT FIRST, but my god some of you, SteveR, AppleFunatic, etc. have serious issues. Did Sony molest you as a child? I am really at odds with myself trying to understand what this all stems from and I read this trash somewhere on the 'net everyday. its beyond anything I have ever come across.
I own a PS2, am getting a PS3, do not want a X360, and am gaining more interest in a Revolution..yes I said Revolution, I refuse to call it a Wii. regardless, I have absolutely nothing at all against Microsoft; well I might have issues with Microsoft for PC-related issues but it doesn't carry over to the XBOX. I own a PS2 bcuz the game library suits me much better than the competition, and thats just what it is, competition. you would think that at the very LEAST, you Sony haters would hope that they come with their best because any idiot who has a grain of salt worth of knowledge of how the corporate/consumer industry works, knows that competition always works in the CONSUMER'S favor. the more competition there is between companies, the lower the prices are and the harder they work to please US you clowns. I will never understand why people argue amongst themselves; leave the bickering to the companies. buy the system(s) you want, stop acting like little children, be happy with your choice, and enjoy the new generation of videogames. there, I'm done...for now.

Any words on web browsing capabilities on PS3 or a firmware upgrade on the PSP to Opera from Access??
jon @ May 9th 2006 2:49AM
I didn't see anything that looked immpressive enough to compulse me to buy. MS will probably have much better clips at their press conference tommorrow night.
$499...deep breath...gulp. That's a crap load of money to be delt.
Lets list the Sony bull crap here so everyone knows:
1. No Dual HDMI ports as they said last E3
2. No HDMI or memory card slots at all in $499 version
3. No announcement of game related Xbox Live like features at all.
4. Removal of the feaking rumble pack in controllers!!! Are you kidding me?
5. GT3.5 with Online support that is not even complete after a year and 1/2 of bullshit talk. If a flagship title isn't ready for online...what does that mean for their online strategy???
6. Sony complained about MS having 2 Skus for 360 saying it would be too confusing...but they did the same damn thing. Although not as confusing...becasue no one will be able to afford $599 so the $499 is the obvious and less confusing choice.
Good things:
1. Competition has been great for the industry...forcing all parties to stretch themselves and innovate (or copy)
2. Lack of HDMI port in $499 PS3 and lack of HDMI in 360 that will soon have HD-DVD add on tells me that Movie industry is not serious about DownResing HD signal via component cables. This is good news for many folks that have perfectly good TV's without HDMI ports.

Geezer @ May 9th 2006 2:55AM
If you do not like Spiderman font, that means you have no taste. The font fits perfectly to the console design, any other font would clash with it. I also loved old boomerang controller, that was cool and innovative, and it is sad to see that Sony caved to the pressure from ignorant fools who has no sense of style. It would look much better with previous controller.
Chris @ May 9th 2006 3:04AM

Vman @ May 9th 2006 3:26AM
Not seeing two HDMI port really really irks me. Really. That would have been one of the coolest innovations in the console world. could you imagine what would have come of it? Think of the head to head battles on two 40" LCD's facing away from each others at a rich friend's house. Or for the average income people, you could buy a long HDMI cable and hook it up to a DVI monitor next to your computer in another room and play from there (as long as the controler's BT would allow).

Sublime @ May 9th 2006 3:53AM
Well, I guess I am going to put in my two cents. This is my first post here on Engadget.
Here is my take on the three systems:
XBox 360: Compared to the PS3 in pricing, it is a good buy, and the graphics power satisfies my wants. Seriously, content and gameply is key to my enjoyment and not graphics, because I will just get used to it. I already have the 360 and have played it a few times; however, I'm just waiting until summer to play more of it since college takes up most of my time. I like how we can have the option of having an HD-DVD extension, so I won't have to pay for it until the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray War is over.
As far as gameplay, the 360 just feels like any other previous console. It doesn't really spark as innovative or advanced in my opinion. Perhaps I should wait until 2nd generation 360 games come out, like Too Human (Or is it God Complex?). By then, I should see a difference in gameplay from Xbox and the 360.
PS3: The system looks just okay to me. Nothing overly impressive to what I've seen thus far. For design, I can hardly care for design because again, gameplay and content are key. Honestly, the PSA just seems like the Blu-Ray version of 360. Maybe the graphics will be better, the same, or worse, but gameply hasn't changed much from it's predecessor.
Also, the price tage... Now I understand that Blu-Ray players will cost at least $900, so that makes this system a steal, but what happens if Blu-Ray is defeated by HD-DVD?
I'm not really too sure about market demographics, but who is Sony trying to appeal to? The rich or well-off? From what I think (as I do not exactly know) a big market is kids and teenagers. Most kids and teenagers don't have a job (or if they do, they will have ahell of a time affording one). Most of them (at least for the lower and middle classes) will ask their parents, or BEG their parents to buy one. If I was younger, asking my parents to buy me a $500 gaming system is just out of the question, no matter how much I beg. $500 is a lot of money to most people and for the younger market, that pricetag may be really hard to reach.
"Hey mom and dad, can you get me a PS3 for Christmas AND my birthday combined?"
"How much?"
"Errr... $500 for the base system and $600 for the premium."
"You kidding me? NO!!!"
PS3 Controller: It pretty much is the same as the PS2 controller, so learning curve should be quick. Their motion sensors seem to be just a knock off from Nintendo. I understand that there are other makers out there that designed something of the same thing, but really, where did Sony get the idea from? Also, most of you will be criticizing me on my opinions and observations and maybe thing that I am anti-PS3, but believe me, I am not. I love the PS2, it's just that I am a little bit dissapointed by the PS3 because of price tag, lack of true innovation, and possibly repetetive gameplay.
I am, however, more enthusiatic about the PS3 than the 360.
Who will win the HD Disc war? Blu-Ray, IMHO.
Lastly...
Nintendo Wii: First of all, that was probably one of the worst names that could have been given to the system. I would have called it this:
Nintendo V (as in Roman Numeral 5)
The abbreviation woulc be: NV and pronounced
"Envy" Perhaps that could have been a selling point for them, saying how the PS3 and 360 envy the innovation of the Wii?
My last favorite Nintendo system was the SNES and N64. GameCube was a flop to me.
Price Tag: Now the price tag is (at this point, rumored to be $250) great because it is much more affordable.
Gameplay: The gameplay on this game should be uncanny from what I have seen. Being able to swing a virtual bat, shoot a villain, and swordfight is VERY appealing to me. If it can bring a new level of gameplay as promised, I will be hooked. The graphics and power of the system does not meet the PS3/360 by any means but again, to me, that is secondary. At least it will be better than NGC.
Downfalls of Wii: Lack of HD support (correct me if I'm wrong) and lack of Hard Drive.
Maybe they should have a base system and premium system like their counterparts?
Now, I am hoping that they will surprise us all with HD support at their press conference tomorrow so I can play the system on my widescreen (Ha, when I get one).
Rankings thus far:
Nintendo Wii
Playstation 3
XBox 360.

You Sony 'haters' have issues.
For everyone knows we need huge companies like Sony, Toshiba etc. to sustain and enjoy the great technological progress we observe today. If Sony hadn't created the Blue Ray, HD-DVD may take even longer to come out into mainstream.
Do you seriously want Xbox to be the only choice gaming console? or Wtf Wiii?
Sony is one of the most innovative and R&D heavy companies in the world. They create breakthrough products, (walkman, Trinitron, PS2, AIBO), and they will only make these products if they observe capital to do so. So in my opinion lets be happy there is healthy competition and MS is giving Sony a fight, and vice versa, or you may wait even longer for the Xbox 720 or PS4.
So lets see some more intellectual or creative comments please.
And in my opinion playstation will woop Xbox and everyone will have one!

Kylara @ May 9th 2006 5:42AM
Strike me if I'm wrong, but won't a lot of people buy the Wii in addition to their high-def console (whether it be XBox or PS3)? Because the Wii (we'll see tomorrow, but a rumored price point of $250 seems reasonable) is cheap enough that I feel a lot of people would buy two. :/ Are a lot of people on this board only planning on buying one console?

Apple Funatic @ May 9th 2006 5:55AM
"You Sony 'haters' have issues."
Why? For just saying something negative about a company that has been going on nothing but hype and broken promises for 2 generations now; Stealing other companies ideas without even attempting to improve on them. Indulging in vaporware announcements to damage their competitors. Being pathetically dishonest again and again by putting forward rendered videos as realtime generated imagery until they're dragged kicking and screaming to admit they're all fake.
I want the 360 and Wii to get ahead this generation. Both have brought some real innovations to the table. They both deserve more marketshare.
What's the PS3- just another hardware platform Sony is using in attempt to enforce another DRM infested format on consumers. It's failed over and over for them; Memory Stick, UMD and now BlueRay.
I don't want Sony to dissapear, but they have to get their act together and remember it's about the games. Not formats.
I say so without having a big hissy you are of the opposite opinion, and I'm not going to label anyone else as 'having issues' for thinking the opposite. - I'll leave the defensive groupthink to the Sony fan boys left with nothing but personal attacks to defend themselves after the universally panned 'dissapointment' that was this years' Sony E3 showing.
Yem @ May 9th 2006 6:02AM
1. No Dual HDMI ports as they said last E3
Yeah that sucks.. for the 0.01% of buys who would use them both.
2. No HDMI or memory card slots at all in $499 version
Remind me again: how many HDMI outputs does the Premium Xbox 360 have? Come christmas there will be ONE console with HDMI support and it's a PS3.
3. No announcement of game related Xbox Live like features at all.
So no news is bad news? I think it's safe to say a) it wont be as good as Live b) it'll be cheaper than live. I'll take that, thanks.
4. Removal of the feaking rumble pack in controllers!!! Are you kidding me?
That could be annoying, though I have rumble disabled in my logitech PS2 controller to save battery life and I don't miss it. I'm surprised they can't work around this issue with fancy signal processing..
5. GT3.5 with Online support that is not even complete after a year and 1/2 of bullshit talk. If a flagship title isn't ready for online...what does that mean for their online strategy???
GT HD isn't the next GT, it's a tech demo. I seriously doubt GT5 will be a launch title.
6. Sony complained about MS having 2 Skus for 360 saying it would be too confusing...but they did the same damn thing.
Yup. On the other hand, the split 360 versions mean games must be designed to work without a hard drive. The PS3 has a hard drive in ALL versions - none of the features which are absent in the cheaper model impact on game design. Sony 1, MS 0.

If you?re going to argue the price, parents will always buy it. The Playstation 2 came out at 300 in the UK. The PS3 will cost 330 in the UK (20gb model).
Ok, it may not be as cheap as a 360 or Wii...but I can assure you it will sell.
And remember...if you did get the 60gb version...its a Blu-Ray player as well.

What the hell you are talking about? Are you compleately out of your freaking mind? I guess not - you just a typical Apple-sucking moron.
What "hype and broken prmises"? Kid, you do not sell 102 million PS2 units only on hype. That is not how the real wold works. If anything XBOX was built on hype and XBOX360 was hyped out of proportion. PS2 was everything it claimed to be. Look at the state of graphics when PS2 was releazed. It was head and shoulder above _anything_ that was at the time. Note that PC 3D graphocs was nearly existend at the time. It performed on par to 0.5 million$ SGI graphics stations. For god sake it sales were restricted by the government becasue it was too advanced at the time.
Stealing companies ideas? Which one? Do not tell me that this pathetic motion sensor in Vii was invented by Nintendo. That would just prove that you are a complete idiot. That tilting crap has been around for long time. And do not tell me about button placement and some stupid sticks - big freaking inventions! Tell me instead what CELL microporcessor architecture element was stolen from MS or Nintendo? Becasue that what matters.
And about hype ... well that called capitalism, furthemore, its not Sony who hypes things up, its advertizement agencies hired by Sony. And that is their job - to hype things up. THat is called advertisement.

Even if you KNOW that the team opposite is better you'll support your own because of loyalty (and passion, to some extent)! Sony vs. MS vs. Nintendo is the same thing. What you guys are doing is quite healthy... by challenging (harshly) the views of others we all get a deeper understanding of the truth which may also force us to question our OWN loyalties and beliefs.

Dont get me wrong, i have absolutely no intention what-so-ever of buying a PS3, but think about it. Is 600 dollars really that much for the product youre getting? I spent 400 dollars on my ipod (which, a year and a half later i completely regret) and all it does is play music. These gaming machines do just a little bit more, for only 200 bucks more. From that perspective, either the ipod is crazy overpriced (which it is) or the ps3 is a bargain.
Oh, and sony sucks ass by the way. yay originality.
