Pioneer updates Carrozzeria in-car entertainment systems
If you're looking to play almost every audio/video format known to man in your car, even MiniDiscs, then Pioneer has just introduced a whopper of an in-dash system that may be perfect for you (well, if you live in Japan, that is). The AVIC-VH009MD in-car multimedia system, which takes over the high end of Pioneer's Carrozzeria lineup, features a 5.1 channel amp, dedicated TV tuner, GPS receiver with birds-eye view, and a head unit that contains a 7-inch screen and plays back DVDs, CDs, MDs, and MP3/WMA files as well as DivX-encoded videos. Also new to the Carrozzeria line is the AVH-P90DVA, which also has a TV tuner and 7-inch screen, but *only* supports DVDs, CDs, VCDs, and the aforementioned codecs plus AAC, but not MiniDiscs or navigation. The all-in-one system will go for a cool $3,200, while the AVH-P90DVA costs $2,300, although if you want to listen to tracks from your cellphone, you'll have to forgo a lot of these niceties and stick with the Bluetooth-equipped AVIC-S1 that we brought you the other day.

Why leave your car? Just get a fridge and a bed and your good to go.
Henry @ May 11th 2006 3:23PM
Oh man, I was hoping it would play VHS tapes and 16mm film.
bloggerville @ May 11th 2006 3:32PM
Will it play my old 8-track tapes?

All this and no Bluetooth?!?
jagernaut @ May 11th 2006 3:50PM
I had a hard time putting a bed and fridge in my civic. So instead I bought a UMPC, external USB DVD-ROM drive, USB TV tuner, hooked up the UMPC sound to the aux input of my already awesome stereo.
What does that Taco Bell guy say? Oh yeah.. It's good to go.
Poopmaster @ May 11th 2006 3:56PM
What, no ordinary tapes? Bleah. What about Laserdisc? What about 5.25" floppies? Engadget, please step away from the Red Bull.

That looks like one badass navigation screen. How do they get all those buildings in 3D?? It looks like a video game!
Come to think of it...maybe it is?
Brett @ May 11th 2006 4:20PM
Here is a lnk to Pioneer Japan's site with more pic of the different units and better views of the Navi screen. I wish we had the detailed views like they do in Japan!

Maybe it's time for a Google Earth based nav system.
russ @ May 11th 2006 6:00PM
i'd wager car stereo theft isn't a BIG problem in Japan?
@DT - I saw car navigation systems in Japan with 3d buildings 5 years ago! looked less 'game like' tho.
russ @ May 11th 2006 6:40PM
blown away by the 3d GPS car nav.. i wonder if you can get your "previous times" to appear as a ghost car on the display.
Tim @ May 11th 2006 6:40PM
ooooooooohh daddy want! Pretty soon I'll need to use my Harmony remote to control everything in my car!
Apothus @ May 11th 2006 10:06PM
why blow $3000 on a system like this when you could install a computer? anyone who is likely to use a system like this already has their informatioon digitised, even minidisk files are digitised so what is the point. you can spend $700 aus on a micro atx system, then if you really want functionality you can get a 14' touch screen for about $1500 aus that would run everything, including your blue tooth and wifi.
Of course all of this would probably result in you colliding head first with a tree but untill that point it would be awesome

This is THE killer product of the day when it comes to car electronics (I say "of the day" because tomorrow there's a press conference by Panasonic about the same kind of products ;)
