You knew the comparisons were going to be inevitable. Now that we've gotten our mitts on both next-gen consoles' motion-sensing input devices,
Nintendo's Wii controller and
Sony's PlayStation 3 controller have to go head to head. That's just the way of the world; who are we to question these two born adversaries, destined to square off in a no-holds barred peripheral deathmatch. So, what did we think? Well, you should already have a pretty good idea of
how we feel about the Wiimote. But what's up with the PlayStation 3 controller? Two controllers enter, one controller leaves.
Well, we should preface our thoughts by some interesting information we discovered talking to a lead developer at an unnamed publishing house: they discovered about the PS3 controller's motion sensing capabilities just a couple of weeks before E3, which is why we're not at all surprised there was only one motion-sensing capable playable on the floor, Warhawk. Does this last-minute decision point to indecisiveness or lack of direction in Sony's PlayStation group? Not necessarily, but you'd better believe it was a decision made in response to the capabilities of the Wiimote.
Now that we've got that out of the way, we played with the controller in two ways: on Heavenly Sword, which was buttons only and no motion, and in Warhawk, purposefully avoiding the buttons, so as to concentrate only on the translation of movement to game.
The controller itself is markedly light, as Sony lauded it to be. Perhaps this is because they ganked the rumble, perhaps this is because of some optimizations they've made to the hardware. But the result was something that some have described as cheap-feeling, but that we actually think shows foresight. When you're holding that controller out and swinging it around wildly for hours on end, you're not gonna want something that's going to make those atrophied gamer arms of yours buckle. Remember how appealing sounding that 17-inch laptop was when you first got it, but how much you wished it was an ultralight when you actually had to take it somewhere? We're thinking it could be like that.

The loss of rumble in the PS3 controller is definitely causing a fissure amongst the PlayStation fan community. We're sure it has everything to do with the fact that that the last minute addition of accelerometers and gyroscopic sensors nixed the possibility of force feedback (unlike Nintendo's external sensor-based motion system). We're not saying it's impossible they'll add rumble before the PS3 launches, but it doesn't look great if Sony's gonna stick to their current technological implementation.

Everything about using the controller as normal was otherwise status quo. The buttons felt and played like a PS2 controller, and the addition of a mini USB port -- which we're hoping they'll keep -- could mean easy charging, and possibly even use on a PC. The motion control, however, was another story entirely. Whereas the Wiimote seemed to produce different experiences in different games and scenarios, the only title being shown with motion on the PS3 produced one experience: laggy control. The level of sensitivity and correspondence of physical to virtual motion was more or less spot on, everything worked as we'd expected -- it just took a lot longer to register movement than we found acceptable. You'd bank left... then it banked left. Do we see this improving with time? Oh sure, no doubt about it.
We realize both controllers are still technically beta hardware, but if we had to choose based on the what we played with at the show, out the door we're gonna have to vouch for the Wii controller first and foremost. Both worked (in the basic-most sense of the word), and both provided a new level of immersion to gaming. But even assuming both functioned equally well, Nintendo's controller's shape and design proved to be more versatile in lending itself to a wide variety of uses and scenarios in movement-based gaming than did Sony's. The simple fact of the matter is Nintendo designed their controller from the ground up with the intention to play with movement, while Sony merely tacked the ability onto their own already-classic design. Now, if you want to talk about a scenario where you've got a severe button masher of a fighting game that needs a thorough going over on both platforms, you're going to have a completely different answer; but as long as we're talking about these controllers' performance with their newfound functions, we have to tip our hats to Nintendo.
Let me start by saying a fact we all know: the XBOX 360 sucks and is going to have a similar fate to the Sega DreamCast (R.I.P). Getting that out of the way, i would like to say that both the Wii and the PS3 are going to successful. Wii over powers the PS3's controller but the Wii wished it had games the PS3 has. The PS3 has Assasin's Creed, MGS4, Indiana Jones with the new Euphoria engine for AI, Mercenaries 2, Killzone 2, etc. The Wii has Super Smash Bros Brawl, a game I even want to play, but only because Snake is in it, Red Steel, and a medley of other ping pong and tennis games. Oh yeah and Tony Hawk 45, where u can use the Wiimote for the skate board....SO??? The only good Tony Hawk games are 1 and 2. Why do you think all these good games are coming out for PS3? Every one of those game developers said the same thing: "Only the PS3 can support it." Yeah, we can water down every aspect of the game and make it for the Wii, but thats more work and it embarrasses the game by making it worse quality. Graphics don't make a system, true, but the fact that the PS3 has the most frames per second that any other system is a nice bonus. And since Playstation games are also good, graphics is all they need to be perfect.
My verdict is that the PS3 is gong to win in the long run even if it doesn't look like it now.
Oh and by the way, Red Steel might get an Adults Only on its rating for having a little more that Michievious Violence.
"If the PS3 can have 7 bluetooth devices does this mean one of the 4 players can't have a headset (considering the X360 can send headset data via the controller if it is a wired headset)."
umm...you do know that headsets wil be wired to the mini usb port in the(wireless) controller, dont you?
"the XBOX 360 sucks and is going to have a similar fate to the Sega DreamCast"
are you suggesting that xbox360 games will be played on wiis? cuz that'd b awesome.
Wii's controller is going to be way better.
Wii:
motion sensor, speaker, extension port, rumble.
PS3:
motion sensor...
I guess Nintendo wins.
Too bad New Zealand (where I live) are full of gay PS lovers!
All they want is blah BS high end graphics from the PS3/Xbox360...I think that they are gay by dismissing Nintendo on the only point of "they are too kiddy" ...what a load of BS! Nintendo has games that are R16 (restricted to 16 years+) to completely Adult Only...
I (17 years old) got locked out of Nintendo's site for that shooter game for Wii, i couldnt even get in when i said i was 20years old...wtf? and people say Nintendo is kiddy? wow...
Yeah, Nintendo has balls to completely change the shape of the controller, and have a radical name like Wii...but then again, that's what a revolution is about: Change.
Go Nintendo!!!
|-|3R0 u r a fucking retard. nintendo never stole the idea from sony. if sony was working on the controller for so long, then y doesn't it feature 6 degrees of freedom and motion sensing anywhere into space? cuz its underdeveloped and they stole it from nintendo. and whoever sed they we're "jesus",shut up. jesus is too big for one console. and for u retards who sed wii is for kids,i agree wit u. red steel, disaster: day of crisis, metroid prime 3,call of duty 3,project H.A.M.M.E.R.,medal of honor,etc... mus really b aimed for the age 10 and under crowd *sarcasm*
alright, so nintendo is trying some crazy ass shit and it will definetly be sick as hell but more for the gamer kind instead of the sports gamer. xbox 360 just wins everything, they got there system out there. not too expensive yet, still an investment. Back to PS3 (p.o.s) they r stuck in the middle, trying to make it the gamer type with the motion section, yet still trying to beat 360. Unfortunetly its not going to happen. Ps3 has also tried to copy xbox live which is going to be a disaster for the next 5 year. Back to those controllers, umm yea even sony said combining the motion part with the vibrating part is going to be a disaster. "Sony claims that the feedback vibration would interfere with games that use the motion sensor." said by gamespot.com's review of e3. Also i would like to add that there is no way ps3 could have more functions available, when xboxlive constintly has update available 24/7, including the 125 updates that were just put out and completely changed the interface of the system. Adding multiple features to the online part, aswell as the media part. Also if ps3 wantes to try and compare to 360 your going to have to wait a full year after it comes out, which will already have given xbox 2 years and not to metion when ps3 comes out with the huge memory capability, well microsoft has already stated they are coming out with another memory unit that will be bigger. So thats my thoughts about ps3 and xbox360. And not to metion the day ps3 comes out will be the same exact day halo 3 comes out for 360 which will drop ps3 sales (haha). And i also have to add the part that ps3 used to be so small and compact well its going to be biger then xbox and they havent changed much about the appearance, just made it bigger and put a big buldge on the top of the system, and painted it 3 colors. Kinda LAME
Comparing a PS3 controller to a Wii controller? lol, they are not meant to do the same. Sony had plans for motion sensing; Nintendo just beat them to it.
When it comes down to it, Sony's game division has been copying Nintendo from Day 1. The original Playstation was made from the canceled SNES CD add on, the people working on it brought it to Sony when it was canceled. Nintendo created the rumble pack before Sony put one in their controllers. Nintendo used an analog stick with a pad before Sony. Should we really be surprised they copied Nintendo yet again?
ok i totally aggree that wii wins but you know what makes me mad?
everyone i talk to hates the wii just cuz its looks different, but if i tell them the special fetures about the wii controler they really like it!
but the thing is i can't tell about 250million people about it
and cuz the ps3 didnt change any looks its gonna get ALOT more sold than wii, but thats there fault what they dont know what they are missing out on cant hurt em
Anyone who has kept up to date on all this wii stuff knows that this time this nintendo system is different. Just look at all the launch titles. Gamers have been waiting a long time for a nintendo system to launch with a lot of really good games. It's gonna happen, its gonna be big. Sony and Microsoft both give props to the wii so just drop it. If you're just hating please, go look at what the publishers are saying about the wii and how excited they're about developing for it. This is a new time and 3rd party support is finally here for Nintendo in a big way. And to address the graphics, they're just fine. For me that's an issue really, graphics i do like in a system, but, i recently seen a high res video of sonic rush or something like that and a high res video of metroid and i'm totally impressed.
2 Different types of consoles for different types of gamers.
Nintendo's new controller looks fun and interesting. But not alot of games i want to play will work on it. Nintendo's game line up looks weak. It's a console that will be fun to play with on certain occassions.
Playstation 3 hands down. My gaming roots have always came from nintendo but gaming has changed and so have i. TOO MANY PS3 games i am dying to play.
and enough about ps3's controller copying nintendo' wii, Sony had a patent for that DEC 05.
I'll buy the WII... later...
PS3 BI*$@
ps3 obviousaly wins lighter controller and no wires to get in your way.
The wwii copied motion from the eye toy cause they cany hink a their ain stuff.
i dont really care for ps3 i have a 360 and thats all i need i mainly got it for halo 3 and microsoft is saying there realeasing it in 07 but anybody whos smart would know there releasing it on the ps3s launch date!!!
HAHA you guys are just too much. Lemme tell all of the people who posted these messages. Most of you are judging the controllers and the whole system by its looks " oh wow, nintendo wii's controller looks so cool because it has all theses buttons" I MEAN SURE THE WII MAY "LOOK" LIKE IT HAS LOTS OF COOL THINGS BUT WHO ARE YOU KIDDING? You gotta play the system to see wats better. If you compare Nintendo to Playstation, Nintendo looks like a system for kids tht are 5yrs old as for playstaion.... I think u can see the differences. And for all the people tht keep on bragging bout the sensor, well guess wat its not tht magical =_= And if you ask me, Nintendo Wii is gonna be a hell of a complicated games with all those buttons, they went overboard, its good to keep things simple :P and thts all i would like to say.
Listen, people.
This entire debate is pointless.
The PS3 is going to be a good system and so is the Wii.
Who gives a flying shit what the specs are on the machines, the thing right now is what is fun.
Oh I know, I should be flamed to hell for saying this shit, but it's true.
Look at gaming history. Nintendo has always been there. Nintendo is the reason we have innovative and new things. Sure, they've been beaten (hands down) by the other consoles, but did it really make systems, like the gamecube, bad? No, not really.
And the whole thing about it being geared towards 8 year olds, is the stupidest shit I've ever read.
We all grew up with Mario and Nintendo, and the fact that they are still making money from these simple charcters, is amazing enough! Sometimes Nintendo makes things so simplistic that people (like Sony) hit their heads and think, "How come we didn't think of that," and they build off each others ideas. Did Sony copy Wii? No, and it's stupid to say so.
The Wii, truely is bringing hope back to the traditional and fun loving (casual) gamer. I can honestly say (and you proabably too) that I don't care about the maturity of the game. I will play if it's fun. If the game is different and unique and something new, I will most likely try. And this is where the Wii succeeds. And for those who call GTA an innovative game, please punch yourselves in your small testicles. Is GTA fun, yeah. Is it innovative, fuck no. Just because a game kills people in different ways does not make it innovative. That if anything appeals to an 8-year old more, cause they just want to blow shit up haha.
So is the Wii better than Ps3...No.
But the Wii is something special in its own right and that cannot be denied.
Casual gamers, like myself, need the Wii as a source to bring back fun when we need it most. And this is why I know the Wii is going to shine.
I never got into the PS controller, and it has all seemed like more graphics piled onto the same first-person shooter and racing games since the PS came out-- PS, PS2, PS3, XBox, and XBox 360 are all the same to me.

As the new ps3 isnt out yet how can you all know what it does and how it feels,i know it looks the same etc.
i really don't want to hear about who copied who nintendo has been breaking new ground the rumble pak in the n64 star fox 64 anyone remember that it came with the game i mean they always do what everyone else won't they have balls step out on a limb and everyone follows as far as controllers go wii is built around the controller sony just added motion sensing for a few games so it's apples and oranges if you ask me and hey i'll probably own both because i just love video games and don't care about who's better why does that even matter it shouldn't.
nintendo is the only innovative company in the gaming market.
the ps2 controller was pretty much the same as the ps1 and the ps3 controller barely improved on the ps2 controller. sony's motto is probably 'if it aint broke don't fix it' which makes sense, but in a way gaming is just getting boring on the ps2 - so what the graphics are better - it's gameplay that counts and the classics of the 80's and 90's prove it.
nintendo have been so creative - who brought the analogue stick, who brought rumble, who brought portable consoles. Nintendo also brought touch screen, wireless contollers, built in mic., tilt sensors, and now motion sensing controllers. (i am sure i've missed a lot of other things too)
i originally thought that i would buy the ps3 - but the gameplay on the wii will be much funner.
nintendo have brought back the fun into gaming
jus to back my point up...
http://www.1001fonts.com/font_details.html?font_id=901
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=672659
now you can see how lazy sony are at generating their ideas
their all the same so everyone saying nintendo are childish needs to look at ps3 taking child superheros and taking their ideas from the film
lets se
$600 bux
i can get
A) Sony 60 GB PS3
B) Nintendos Wii, an extra wiimote and nunchuck adapter, Zelda, Dragon Ball, Red Steel, Marvel ultimate alliance and Splinter Cell, heck i even have some money left to buy some food or even spend it on the Virtual console that is going to be available from day 1
I like both Sony and Nintendo, but i consider myself not a nintendo Fanboy, but a nintendo defender, they were the first on almost everything in gaming, of course their downfall came with the N64 and GC, since none of this systems could read the previus console Games, thing that went alright for PS1 and 2, because you can play almost any game of PS1 on your PS2, plus PS2 has a built in DVD and a really large colection of games, Heres where PS meets their doom, PS has alot of games, but the ones that get the most renown are the final fantasy series, Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry, Tekken and some other games that are unique to the PS, aside from that most PS games can be played either in Xbox and GC, heck i was really angry at nintewndo when no Final fantasy was left for the GC except for the crappy Crustal chronicles.
That all is going to change, nintendo was waiting for this moment to rise again, nintendo probably lost the last 2 war of consoles, but im pretty sure hes going to win this one, nintendo has always innovated in various things and with the Wii, i think this is the real dream of nintendo making a console so that not onli the kids in the house will play, but also the elders.
Heck y even think im going to enjoy sitting with my dad to play Wii sports or watching him do surgery on Trauma center, i might even convince him to go to war in Call of duty 3, thats one of my dreams, to play videgames with all my family with them not worring "what does this button do" and the like, but rather sit, watch play and enjoy
So nintendo, good job on uniting every 1 of us
i now see why Wii is called Wii
(im 20 years old BTW)
In every message board I can always seem to find at least one person who says "The PS3 has motion snesing AND HD graphics! So it's the best!"
When I first heard rumors that Nintendo's next console will be motion sensitive I pictured a traditional controller with tilt sensing and thought it was the most gimmicky idea ever.
Then I saw the Wii-mote and realized, Nintendo's onto something. It was much better than what I imagined. The PS3's controller is exactly what I initially pictured. In other words, gimmicky.
Only a few genres can benefit from PS3's motion sensing. EVERY game can be reinvisioned beautifully on the Wii.
I think the PS3 is much better than the chep-o gay wii that is designed for kids in kirdergarden that includes games like spongebob and some other horrible games, and the PS3 beats the wii in every thing and the PS3 is designed for mature people not little kids
I Think the Wii controller is awesome. And the PS3 controller stinks, and I am nine years old.
I got ONE thing to say......
WII has the best controller
and PS3 not ; )
hahah my PS3 is Better then the Wii
wii wins definitely!!controller different from others. At this time might be one of its own!!
ps3 is the best thing there is in the market better then the wii much better i think the wii is stupid swiging back and for the control looks dum ps 3 number 1
ps3 number 1
I agree that Wii definitely came up with the concept of the motion sensor controller and the PS3 added it later on (not at the last second, the controller's main purpose was not one of motion sensor...you have to keep that in mind). The only downside i see to the Wiimote is that you will get tired of having to move around (laptop concept mentioned in article). I have heard from many people that after they got over the motion sensor capability, they just simply did not think it was as cool, and became aggravated with the amount of moving they had to do. Something i just thought about, which controller will break easier and how expensive is it to buy each?
I still think that nintendo's games are for kids and not for hardcore players
I totally go with the Wii controller. My brother bought one the other day and i'm in love with it.The Wii controller is very very very good. Not saying that the Playstation 3 is crap though. I reccomend the Wii controller though. It kicks @$$.
I'd really have to agree with everyone on the fact that the wii's controller is more inovative and origional than the 360 or PS3.I own a PS3 and because of its lightweight feel it renders the motion sensing allmost usless (when steering in racing games). And I respect all of the next gen consoles, it's just that I wish the wii had better graphics. (it doesn't look like eye candy to me on a LCD) I say to all those fighting over what console is better, that they all have their weaknesses and strengths and when it comes down to gaming you decide what console fits you best. In my oppinion, i wish I had all 3 of the next gen consoles. It would be sweet if these consoles could combine into one real next gen console that has motion sensing, great processor, awsome graphics (like DX10), and the support of online gaming. Cheers to all those gamers out there reading this. Gamers rule!
one thing to say ps3 song in newgrounds.com p.s ps3 sux
Okay first off the Playstation3 didnt copy the the Wii the Playstation3 uses SIXAXIS the wii on the otherhand uses a sensor bar, much diffrent cause you have to tilt the SIXAXIS controller for it to work and you can trun it on or off the, wii is wireless with a sensor bar, there you go no copying done.
im not a sony fanboy, i bought the ds and the psp and didn't know which console to buy before they came out, but the ps3 looks better. Wii fanboys shouldnt talk about coplyin because the ps2 played dvds and know the wii does, hmm... Bothe are good but the ps3 will have better, less childish games. Also peolple saying you shouldn't buy the ps3 for the graphics, well it does help to be able to see what your doing, and amazing graphics are definatly a plus. If you have a wii you need space to be able to jump around, but the ps3 is easier to use in smaller rooms. Playstation is a bigger name so gaming companies are going to put more games out on the ps3. Saying that i do have to admit the ps3 is way to expensive and the games are way to pricey.
man ps3 is the best i dont no y yall like the wii it has no graphics IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!! u cant hear music or watch videos or use the internet y waist money on that crap
No Sony is better sont does not have time to be making controll for games they have other stuff todo 2 Nintendo Dosent.. n by the way nintendo wii controlers have Sony parts.... read it at Nintendo info..
