The amount of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace

How can you get WinLIRC to work if there is no COM port associated with a hardware IRDA device? I've plugged in a Vista compatible IRDA adapter, the KingSun KS-959 and it appears in the Vista control panel with a lovely icon, yet there seems to be no actual com port associated with it when looking at the device properties.
So obviously when starting the software up, I haven't a clue how to associate the device with the relevant com port.
