Motorola Q is set for launch next week
Remember a ways back when we told you that the Motorola Q was due for May 22nd? Well that might not have been so far off after all. Turns out Motorola has just announced that they will be releasing the Q "next week," a week which turns out to include May 22nd among its numbered days. The EV-DO phone will be out first for Verizon and Sprint, but there should be a Cingular UMTS version out by the end of the year -- a bit earlier than they previously stated -- and possibly even a HSDPA version if we're really lucky. They're billing the Q as a "BlackBerry killer," which is fine, but we're just glad they finally realised that releasing a product is an important part of the BlackBerry killing process.

finally

Fine as a BB killer I guess, but for a device that size I am not sure why they went with the Smartphone version instead of making it a PDA edition device.
Feature wise I think my PPC6700 is a far better unit.

Why does motorola feel it necessary to have dead space near the bottom end of their phones?
Jamie @ May 16th 2006 9:51PM
Which processor are they using in this? (And at what speed?)
bliss @ May 16th 2006 10:03PM
#1... you said it... FINALLYYYY. I guess next week is better than June.
Billy @ May 16th 2006 10:07PM
It is so your wrists don't get tired.
Chris @ May 16th 2006 10:11PM
#4, that isn't deadspace, it's where they put the antennae.
JCA @ May 16th 2006 10:56PM
Correcto #8. That space is also the "cavity" for the loudspeaker. WIthout that cavity you would have absolutely zero bass response and speakerphone would sound like crapola

wm5 IMO is not ready for a full time corporate rollout by any means. I am getting rid of my MDA and getting a bb 8700g.

Running Microshit software...the only thing this thing is gonna kill, is itself.
Benson Leung @ May 17th 2006 12:14AM
Jaime. The processor in this phone is an Intel Xscale at 312 Mhz... "Bulverde" Incidentally the same processor and same speed used in the Palm Treo.

Motorola often has shitty handheld hardware, so I assume that this will be more junky than average given how long it's taken to come out.
ubi de Feo @ May 17th 2006 4:07AM
there's nothing convincing me about this device.
I am the happiest owner of a nokia e61.
and I wouldn't change the audio quality and the signal quality of nokia for a motorola with ugly keys.
:)
David @ May 17th 2006 5:53AM
Is it going to work for Sprint?
Manly @ May 17th 2006 7:32AM
#14: Have you tried playing video on the E61?
Glad you are happy with it. I currently have some serious techno lust for it, and Symbian S60 is a lot more proven than whatever Motorola puts in the Q (is the name there so that they can sponsor the next Bond movie?).

I am so sick of hearing this 8itch is going to ship. They have dragged this out way to long. I lusted after it, then wanted it and have now grown tired of it.
Actually, thanks Motorola, you saved me a few beans on this one. I would have had it on eBay already by now if it had launched when they started hyping this thing.
Motorola Q - Been there, done that, got the t-shirt all without ever buying it. Next please.

Orneta @ May 17th 2006 10:37AM

Orneta @ May 18th 2006 12:54AM
Cant wait for this one!
Larry @ May 22nd 2006 5:13PM
AH... but can the Q be used as a wireless device to connect your laptop to the internet like the new Blackberry? Anybody know?
kenn @ May 23rd 2006 11:31AM
I look at this... I look at my new treo... I look at the ppl around me and I can only imagine the comments. "You want that?... but you already HAVE IT!"
Oh well.
BC @ May 24th 2006 8:21PM
How big is the Q? What kind of processor does it use???
keith @ May 25th 2006 4:13AM
Does anyone know if the Q will be wifi capable by using a mini SD Wifi Card?
Bruce Wickstrom @ Jun 15th 2006 10:01PM
When will sprint roll this out?
