How-to create backup copies of your Xbox 360 games
Now that you've flashed your Xbox 360's firmware to enable the playing of backup discs, you probably want to start actually backing up those expensive games you bought in case they get scratched or perhaps even melted by your toasty 360. And luckily for you, CleverMod has posted just the step-by-step instructions you need for ripping your games and then burning the images onto dual-layer DVDs -- but keep in mind, you're voiding about a million warranties with all of this flashing and ripping and such. Basically, CleverMod's method involves disassembling a DVD drive so that you can switch discs without hitting the eject button, and then installing a program called WxRipper that finds a so-called "magic number" from any regular 8+GB dual-layer DVD. The program then uses that data to unlock a substituted 360 disc and dump a RAW copy onto your hard drive, which can be burned onto a blank disc and presumably played using the Commodore4Eva hack on Toshiba-Samsung drive-sporting 360s. And just to be super clear, if you don't own a copy of the game you're ripping, then you're not allowed to do this (i.e. Blockbuster, GameFly games are off-limits).

Thanks for this message! However, I believe this method for copying/backing up Xbox 360 games is a bit outdated, and the description is not that extensive.
I found something more up to date, what do you guys think?

Bunch of book burners.
"Also take note you won't be able to play your backups as microsoft won't allow booting of dvd-r on your xbox360."
WTF?. Is this true
Hi just wanted to know how do i copy a back up copy and what software do i need tks
hello im new and wanted to know if i get my xbox 360 to play backed up games can i still go live on it thanks also what is needed to play backups
i keep getting Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" error message when i'm dumping from wxripper why ?
So if i make a backup disc of a game, I can just put it in and play it, or do i need to open up my xbox 360 and put in some chip?
I think if you've had the problem I've had which is the game disc cracking in becoming useless when it's done nothing but sit in the console you will see the need to back up your games. When it comes to optical media never feel guilty about backing it up because it will fail.
MS has put in a system to make it harder for people to backup the original xbox games. Your dvd drive does not read the game as data (like it does with the ps3) it reads them as a dvd, thus making it impossible to copy...so we thought. It is possible to buy an external dvd drive that reads your xbox games as data, so they can be copied with such programs as clonecd, with no connection to your computer from your xbox...simple disc to disc backup. The same can be done with the 360, but a dual layer burner is needed. Put the game in the external dvd drive so it can be read as data, then burn it with a program like conecd or xbox backup creator and burn it to a dual layer dvd disc with your computers dual layer burner (or an external burner). Engadget is not responsible for telling people about piracy and neither am i. The xbox 360 games cost 100 bucks a piece, who wants to risk having a game that exspensive be meltet in your machine. Im pretty sure that MS isn't going to give you a refund. I agree that piracy is wrong...but who gives a sh!t when you pay 700 bucks for a console on it's own and never play it. Long live the modchip and scumbags who make it possible!
All thoughts of the moral implications of stealing someone elses property aside, I think this kind of information sharing is vital to development. All forms of tech and eventually all people benefit from the 'what is possible', the status quo rarely yeilds much of value.
Here are the most common reasons people give for justifying "backup":
1) My kids ruin the discs and the disks are too expensive to replace. - by this logic, if you buy your kid a bike and he's too rough and breaks it, you have the right to steat a bike to replace it? No, it doesn't matter that one is electronic media and the other is manufactured. In the old days, when you vinyl record wore out, you bought another one. If your kid broke the record, you weren't entitled to get another one, or steal one. Now you say, moot point, cause you can't copy a bike or a vinyl record? EXACTLY THE POINT! That we can copy electronic media, doesn't change the argument or the legal reason for doing so. Parents must hold their kids accountable for not destroying things they own, whether it's game disks, bikes, their pets, their clothes. If destroyed, you live without, or you buy another and replace it.
2) I can't afford the games and I already spent so much on the console, I'm justified in pirating. These companies make so much money , it's okay. I'm "entitled" to use pirated copies of MS Office, because I already paid for Windows - So by that reasoning, I can't afford expensive diamond jewelry or a BWV 750, so is it okay for me to steal jewelry or a car? Certainly DeBeers and BMW make plenty of money, and it's only "one" diamond necklace or "one" car. Or suppose I already own some diamond jewelry and a BMW, by the argument above, these companies already have "too much" of my money, so if I want more jewelry, or a second car,it's okay to steal it.
3) I hear all the time "I'm entitled to make a backup, a backup is not an unauthorized copy" - Unless the EULA specifically says you can make a backup coopy (which for games they don't, otherwise they wouldn't be copy protected), then making a backup is an unauthorized copy and illegal.
4) Finally argument I hear all the time "It's okay to post information on how to commit a crime, because the poster is not responsible for what people do with the info". From a legal standpoint, maybe so, but who are we kidding, ethicly, it's not right. I may have a "legal" right to post information on how to write a computer virus, or build a bomb...does that mean I should?

Where is the turtorial?
You know, everyone who is "against" this counters with the argument "If I posted how to build a bomb it just like this" well....last time I checked Bombs dont have ANY other use than to kill, as Computer viruses have no other use than to damage your computer.
Making Backups of your games IS legal as long as you have paid for the original game.
We are back to the whole "Guns dont kill people its the PEOPLE that use them that do debate" just because the information CAN be used illegally doesnt mean that everyone is going too. Some people might see this article and think "Oh wow! I didnt know I could back up the games that my kid or dog or whatever broke! that will save me alot of money from having to buy the game again!" they are the people that Engadget are attempting to educate the people who will acually legally benefit from this.
Now we do know that there are other people out there that will go "Oh alright! I can now copy games and play them and not have to pay for them!" these are the people that Engadget knew they would have to deal with but thought that the lot of you would be mature enough to figure it out.
I can go down to the store right now and by some sudafed, I can take it legally and use it the way it is ment too, OR I could use it to make illegal drugs does that mean that I shouldnt be allowed to get it because it could possibly be used in a illegal way? NO because the decision is ultimatly MINE the same goes with the information the Endgadget has posted sure it could be used illegally but there is the chance that honestly hard working people will find this information useful in a legal way.
Bravo Engadget! for thinking about the little man and not automatically assuming that all of us are lieing dirty rotten thieves and limiting our resources
I find it funny that so many people write this off as being only used for piracy...
My friend just bought Gears of War and so did I...His CD got scratched and now we can't play through a good chunk of the game in co-op, so I plan on burning him a copy that will actually work. Wow...There's a 'legal' way of using this tutorial! *gasp*
Not to mention, seeing how easy his CD got scratched, and all the cheap-ass hardware MS puts in the XBox, I'm going to make backup copies myself in-case mine get scratched as well. NOT ALL STORES WILL REPLACE SCRATCHED GAMES! A lot of the stores where I live will say "Scratched game? Where's the $60 for a new disc?"
That's my two-cents.
Considering I've had 3 different 360s ruin 3 different perfectly good discs, I'm thinking of starting to make backups of all of my games. Yes I buy all of them, and yes I spend my hard earned cash on them, but if microsoft isn't going to replace discs damaged by the console, then I would feel a lot more safe playing backup copies instead of the original discs.
I own an XBox, but I've never played a single game on it.
I soft-modded it and installed XBMC. I use that to access media off my PC to watch on my TV everyday.
It is modded and I do not have any pirated games.
When the 360 gets to that stage, maybe I'll buy one.
There are legitimate uses for modding, and there are legitimate people such as myself who want articles like this to know exactly where the modding scene is at.
Yes people are going to use this to burn illegal games.. Like someone on here posted before, who cares.. You can not bash engadget for posting this information.. There are over a dozen videos on how to learn to lock pick.. I suppose we need to have them removed as well for fear someone will break into other people's property.. Information should be public and free.. Dont go blaming other people for how you use it..
http://www.PlanetHalo3x.com is the best Halo 3 / Gaming site out there. They always have free give aways, contests, and tons of members!
Awesome article.. getting my Xbox flashed right now...
Ok guys, everyone who is on here crying about people using this information for immoral reasons....shut up! I just paid over $100.00 for the Collector's edition of Halo 3 and it's already stopped working. I am in the military and deployed overseas right now so this disk is not kept in the most prestigious state but damn....I will begin backing up all my games that I have purchased once I get home. Thank you for the article.
I do have a modded Xbox. I only buy backup games from a dude that sells them nearby. He encodes them so I can still use Xbox Live. I do have a good job and could afford to pay for them.
Honestly, I don't care. I had a modded PS1, a modded Xbox that I could rip all the games I could grab from Blockbuster and Gamefly to... I, honestly, just don't care what you think. Free is the right price! Yay for geeks that figure this out and give me cheap games. Thank you!
Here in Australia we have to pay $99.95 for xbox 360 games, this is why piracy is big business, Ok is may cost a lot of money to develop games, but to make a disc with a game on it only costs a couple of dollars, so if they were to charge a more reasonable price like maybe $30.00, then more people would buy originals rather then a pirate copy that may not work.
USE THIS TUTORIAL WITHOUT TAKING APART YOUR DVD DRIVE OR COMPUTER!
Skip steps 1 and 2.
Put in your 8 gig movie disc, and let windows recognize it. Run wxripper, click on 'find magic number', then click on 'stop drive'. WAIT for DVD drive to stop COMPLETELY(this may take several minutes). Open the drive (without pressing eject button) by using the emergency pinhole located on the face of most DVD drives below the door. You will have to manually pull the door open. Put in your 360 disc and manually push the door closed. Push firm and quick (almost slam it) to close the door. Click on 'spin drive' and follow the steps in the tutorial. This worked for me, good luck!
***!!THIS WILL NOT MAKE A PLAYABLE 360 BACKUP!!***
you must patch the security sector and stealth files before you burn it!
