We knew Acer was going to be one of the first vendors
after Toshiba to roll out
an HD DVD-equipped laptop, and now it looks like the company is ready to be one of the first out of the gate (
after Sony, of course) with Blu-ray as well. Although Acer is refusing to comment, reports out of Taiwan are that the company will introduce both Blu-ray and HD DVD-equipped portables at the upcoming Computex 2006 trade show. We're ready to see it happen -- though what we
really want is one box with both drives in it. Maybe they can follow up with that.

Still no news on BD/HD-DVD on $100 OLPC?

Will they use combo drives?
I personally want a desktop BLD/HDDVD combo burner. Might as well throw in DVDR, CDR while you are at it.
It also has to cost $39 with free shipping for an OEM unit from an online tech warehouse.

It wouldn't be a $100 then, now would it. So the news is, it ain't gonna happen it's as cheap as current CD/DVD players.

What is all the fuss about?
I do not want to pay for HD DVD. The James Bonds for example belong to columbia now, and also that movie da vinci code. That's 2 possible sellers that will (as it seems now) never come out on hd dvd.
So what's the deal then?

hd-dvd won't be around for more than another year. blu-rays are higher capacity, more durable, and supported by more studios. After the ps3 release this whole format war should be over. I'm getting a computer right now and I want it to be future proof so I'm going to buy the first Blu Ray system that comes out no matter what it costs, probably that vaio system that caused all the trouble with the "fake" demonstration

bah... people who want a br player will just buy a ps3.

Well a BLD/HD-DVD combo burner would cost probably more than the laptop itself, given that a BLD burner was announced for about $600. Of course they'll get OEM deals, but still this will increase a lot the price of the laptop.
It's a stupid war. If they would settle for one common format, then when all "their powers combine" they could upgrade and improve it quickly. But how can you make peace when there are tons of money involved.
