Dell XPS M2010 gets official
Well, we never really thought they'd have the guts to do it, but those kooky cats over at Dell just outted the XPS M2010 first seen at CES. It's not a laptop, it's not a desktop, it's, well, something in between which isn't always the best place to be. The XPS M2010 is pretty much spot-on to those leaked specs, meaning this roughly $4000 (about $8,000 fully spec'd) Windows Media Center PC maxes-out with a 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600, up to 4GB of dual-channel DDR2 memory, a 20.1-inch 1680 x 1050 LCD driven by a 256MB RADEON X1800 graphics card, up to 240GB of RAID 0/1 capable disk, 802.11a/b/g WiFi and a host of other features including a detachable Bluetooth keyboard with mouse, 1.3 megapixel cam integrated into the display bezel, and 8 built-in speakers with subwoofer and integrated high-definition audio. Portable? Well, this hog folds and has a handle but at nearly 20-pounds, you won't likely be taking it any further than the nearest LAN party.

If the price drops, I'll get one. My eyes are tired of the small text on 15" screens, and 17" doesn't seem so much better. I've considered getting a small laptop and an external display, but they usually lack a lot of the out-puts (like DVI), and it would be challenging to take the display as a carry-on. I'd still need speakers, too. And the wireless bluetooth keyboard would be very nice if I use it as a bedroom TV / media center.
I have to think this format is the future of desktops. Nobody really needs all that wasted space for PCI cards when PC/Express, or USB is just as good and similar in cost. And there's no reason the price on devices like this shouldn't come down.
For one thing, they could reduce it to one internal HD since two is overkill for most people. An external 3.5" 350 GB USB/Firewire drive for backups is much cheaper (~$160) than the 2nd 2.5" ~100 GB drive Dell offers (~$250?).
The m2010 does seem overly pricey, but it is very well suited to those (few?) who, like me, are dying for a full-size screen but still need to be able to transport the machine on an airplane: I don't think there's any other desktops that I could bring as a carry-on. Or are there?

I recently purchased one of these for business use. It is not a laptop for in-flight use, but is GREAT once you arrive at your hotel. I agree about the small screens on other laptops, and my stubby finges seem to hate the average laptop keyboard. I think it was well worth the purchase price, and intend to replace my desktop at home with a 2010 as soon as possible.

Well, I've had my m2010 for about a month now. It's an absolute dream.
It's mobile - but when you set it up - with the removable wireless keyboard, and wireless mouse, it transforms nicely to your typical ergonimically correct desktop setting. I doubt you'll trek it off to the nearest hot-spot coffee place - as it's just a little bit too heavy. But if you need your desktop computer to be mobile every now and then - this is the deal.
The media center is a ton of fun. I got 2 120 GB hard drives so I can record my favorite TV shows with the TV tuner and save that media to one of the hard drives and have the other one for my files. I'll record episodes of "Extreme Engineering", burn the DVD and mail them off to my somewhat non-tv watching engineer dad who just gets a kick out of that show. We've set up this machine outside for Outdoor Movie night - the screen is gorgeous. The sound is extremely impressive. Outside there is a ton of atmospheric noise and yet the sound from the built in 8 speakers while watching a film is very focused, subtly excellent, and easy to hear. The media center remote control is fantastic as well - with a gyro button in the middle that allows you to use the remote as a mouse - talk about improving hand-eye coordination!
The little camera at the top of the screen is really very fun. Video mail is easy to create and it's got surprising resolution.
The dual core processor means many processes at the same time and no slowness. I work with large graphics files and you would think they were itty bitty jpegs by the way this thing processes. Forget slowdowns with virus software - it just doesn't happen.
The way the handle and screen function together is quite impressive. Once you open the laptop, the screen rises to a vertical position and then pulls away from the handle towards you so you can pull the screen forward and make it so it's almost right on top of the front edge of the dvd drive while angling it to suit your needs - the CPU doesn't take up a ton of horizontal space on the desk top - especially once you take the keyboard off.
Good luck finding a carrying case for this monster. Even those large messenger bags barely fit this beast. However, if you do a google search for "Dell XPS m2010" - as of now there is one manufacturer making some neoprene cases especially for this computer. Even with the handle, it's just more comfortable having a case around to protect the investment.
I highly recommend this machine. If you do buy - make sure you call Dell rather than buy it online. Those sales folks can give you deals. I got mine with 2G RAM, the TV Tuner, top processor, and 2 120 GB hard drives for $3880. You can't quote that online.

I just received the M2010. Just opening the package was an event. Very nice presentation. Now for the substance. The M2010 is awsome! This is truly a multi-media center. The bluetooth detachable keyboard and mouse are a very chic feature. I purchased this unit to use in presentations and trade shows. But concerning transporting this laptop on roids, better eat your Weaties. And the fact that there is no carring case with wheels available, presents a major problem for those having to tote 20lbs while standing in an airport security line. The good news, you won't have to fumble trying to get this baby out of your carry-on, it is the carry on.
Chellie @ Oct 30th 2006 11:46AM
dell now offers a carrying case w/ wheels for this unit the price is $225-$250.
i am very excited about ordering this system.

Please advise where this roll aboard case for the XPS M2010 can be found....I've searched long and hard and to no avail. I don't want to lug 20+ lbs with peripherals....rolling is only way to go with this mac daddy computer.
Please let me know where to find them.

I got my hands on this monster for Christmas! Yes it is large! Yes it will test my ability to haul it around! I wouldn't have it any other way! I might have to turn it on on the plane just to watch how everyone reacts to the movies I have loaded on it.
Traveling with this system may be difficult. But having all this power is work it. I have three virtual machines in VMWare. Plus the XP win host system. I'm not sure if I will upgrade to vista right away but this system is approved to do so and I get a free upgrade. So if I want to I can. 1 gig of memory and 240 gig of HD makes a very good desk top let alone a portable (I can't call it a lap top).
For a case I had to revert to a luggage case to carry all the stuff. I remember the olden days. This much hp is well worth it.
