Motorola's "Canary" sings us a little song
This thing just gets prettier and prettier every time we see it. We don't have any solid deets on specs for Canary, the RAZR's heir apparent, but the rampant speculation mill currently has her getting a 2 megapixel shooter, 17 measly megabytes of internal storage, a MicroSD slot, and the all-important Bluetooth 2.0. We're seeing conflicting reports on whether we'll get UMTS, but we gotta be honest, quad-band EDGE alone just isn't going to cut it for a high-end phone by the time Canary likely drops in 2007. More shots of Canary doing its thing after the break.

When in 2007 will this be released? I am up for my free phone from Verizon in January 2007... ;-)
shirizaki @ Jun 7th 2006 9:04PM
Too bad this is a GSM phone (no VZW, alltel, or bell goodness).
This phone looks awesome. I hope the Micro SD is external (as opposed to the behind the battery setup of the v3i). The wideness of the razr always bothered me.
So I guess this "canary" and the in development SCPL are slated to replace the RAZR and the SLVR?
Looks like as soon as I eyeball a new toy a shinier one comes along. :(
Mikey Mondavi @ Jun 7th 2006 9:04PM
Yeah, the design looks solid, but i hope they did a better job on the OS. They really need to start putting out 3rd party dev kits for the razr series given the populatiry.
dr.nomolos @ Jun 7th 2006 9:04PM
Looks nice, so long as you have deep pockets.
With the mini-SD slot, will this thing play MP3's, or is that just for as many pics you feel like taking?
neotrooper @ Jun 7th 2006 9:15PM
Bengal Boy has all the deets plus a lot more quality angles of Canary vs. other phones. (...along with his usual use of gratuitous bikini babes):

First motorola makes a cell phone that's too that doesn't compensate for it's slim factor. Now they make a phone that's not wide enough and it's height is too tall.
DT @ Jun 7th 2006 9:32PM
Don't you mean the CNRY?
Josh @ Jun 7th 2006 9:39PM
I actually saw someone using one of these the other day in a restaurant. I am in Chicago, so I have to assume the dude was a Moto employee... I have to say, it looked quite nice in person. If the software has improved to match the look, Moto might finally win me back.

They fixed the one thing I didnt like about the RAZR - its width.
Muamer @ Jun 7th 2006 9:58PM
The fixed the width, but made it too long. don't like it.
Ammon Cunningham @ Jun 7th 2006 9:59PM
that phone looks like 4" long when it's closed? The Razor is nice sleek, but WAY too long...who wants a phone like that? but I guess if you want longer and longer phones, then the "heir apparent" of the RAZR is the way to go...
Samuel L. Chang @ Jun 7th 2006 10:02PM
The Razr's width never really bothered me. However, the screen on the outside is right where I put my finger on the razr, so it is constantly covered with fingerprints and it's on the same place as the CNRY.

To joshs comment: A couple of months ago, I had an motorola employee come to my class at Brother Rice High School in Chicago for a job fair type thing and he had a canary with him. He was like an engineer for motorola and he had a finished canary and was talking about. It looked pretty nice. He also talked about how motorola is behind japan in the fact that japan has had 4G networks for sometime and we are just getting 3G.

I kind of like the old one more, I like how it's more substantial. The keypad on the new one looks BORING, the old one is prettier, and I HATE the color. The specs thus far are beyond disappointing... by the time it comes out 2-megapixels on a camera phone will probably be the equivalent of a VGA camera today. Why does Motorola do that? And for the love of Prada, could the put a flash on any of their camera phones?!

Still not diggin' the Jay Leno chin.

This looks just like the Motorola V3x thats out in Europe for the past few months.
I know we get our pones a lot sooner tha you guys in the US, but if that is the V3x, you ain't missing much! ; )
Dustin @ Jun 8th 2006 8:31AM
I'm not so sure about the size of this phone either. I currently have a V3c and one of the things I don't like about it is how long it is when opened. The phone I had previous to this one was a slider and I think next time I'll go back to that form factor. To me, it seems to have the best combination of versatility and size.
psychicsailboat @ Jun 8th 2006 8:52AM
Just my 2 cents, but I have a razr, and i think that the size is perfect. when i first got it i thought it was too wide, but that was only until i actually used it.
RyanV @ Jun 8th 2006 11:21AM
mmmmmm... that got my nipples a bit hard.
matt @ Jun 8th 2006 11:40AM
i like the look of the original much better...
Perrey Z. @ Jun 8th 2006 2:15PM
I'm sick and tired of the RAZR and it's many evolutions now that every one can own one. It was cool when it first came out in late 2004 which was sold for $1,000 and cause envy for thouse who didn't own one. I'm waiting for the next "IT" phone.
Kramerican @ Jun 9th 2006 10:52AM
Which model is the one on the right? In China I saw a RAZR that was purple and I am hoping that it comes out in America soon.
Jorge @ Jun 15th 2006 10:44AM
How come nobody has come out with a true video phone?
How come everyone seem to have forgotten about the Holy Grail of cell phone features: the video phone, a true video call not pictures. This looks like a great platform/device to implement this feature (with the camera and little screen in front). I think the next killer app (or killer phone) will be the video cell phone. What do you think?
thano @ Jun 23rd 2006 12:31AM
I think it looks like a worthy successor. Although the look of it did take a while to grow on me. Although i hated the V3 when i first saw it (coz of overbite hugeness) but then bought one and was extremely pleased with it. I will reserve judgment until i see it in 'person'. Hope there isnt too much of wait for us Australians for this Moto!
