Analyst "confirms" AMD desktops for Dell in September
We wear a little thin with analysts always doing their analyst thing and telling us what companies are up to with no proof whatsoever, but it sure seems Citigroup Investment Research is pretty confident this time about Dell going AMD in September. They're claiming to have "confirmed from industry sources that Dell will offer an AMD based desktop in September of this year." Dell just added AMD chips to their server line after holding out for years, and also recently bought the AMD-friendly Alienware, both of which has helped continue the constant rumors of Dell using AMD across the line. As for this rumor, there aren't any deets on the actual desktop model, but Citigroup's Glen Yeung is saying that AMD's smarminess about market share expansion this year stems from a deal cut with Dell. Alright, Glen Yeung of Citigroup, we're holding you to this one!

I'll believe it when i see it...

close, but still won't make me buy a Dell.

Is it time for Dell to renew contracts with Intel?
marshak @ Jun 14th 2006 5:25PM
Imagine how many customers call dell asking for a custom computer and (not knowing) demand an AMD system because they hear their friend has one and it's amazing. Time for dell to wake up and smell the performance difference per dollar.

The innovator of all PC manufacturers, Apple, looked at Intel's forthcomming range of new CPUs and choose Intel. In June and July and the months following Intel is set to roll out thier new ranges of CPUs, which early reviews seem to indicate are extremely powerful and low in energy usage.
Question: If you are DELL, would you take this exact moment to move models to AMD?
Danny @ Jun 14th 2006 5:31PM
It's about time. That's all I have to say.

Logically speaking, It doesn't make sense, as far as performance is concerned. Anyone here can go to Tom's Hardware and see the newest tests that pin Intel's Conroe chip against AMD's uber-powerful flagship FX-60 processor (although I'd much rather see it pinned against a FX-62). You might be surprised by the results. I have long been a fan of AMD; the desktop that I am writing on, built by myself is an AMD. I have to say, just looking at the performance data, it is incontrovertible.
Intel just might retain that luster it once had, providing that AMD doesn't have a trick up its sleave.
Ayrkain @ Jun 14th 2006 7:48PM
A lot of people think that Conroe's benchmarks are rigged.
Not saying it's true, but that's the word on the "street", as it were.
Doug @ Jun 14th 2006 11:42PM
I don't trust any test run by Tom's Hardware. First of all, Intel is a sponsor of that site. Second, if you look at the tests they ran, it's the testing methodology created by Intel, not a third-party. Tom's Hardware has run more than one "comparison" over the last year that was flat-out biased against AMD - including one in which they said the Pentium D outperformed the FX-57, even though the Pentium kept crashing.
Yes, the Conroe benchmarks are rigged - that's becauswe Intel will only allow their benchmark methodology to be used. The "benchmark" trades real-world scenarios in favor of hand-picked tests that tend to favor Intel in the first place.
Chris @ Jun 15th 2006 12:16AM
um, toms did run it against the fx-62, and as usual, the intel wins in about half the tests.
interesting thing though, if you look at the AM2 review they say "at 2.8 GHz there's virtually no room for overclocking" but then the conroe review they overclock it to 3.0! almost 10% is "virtualy nothing"?
so conroe is what's next from Intel, well what's next from AMD? we all know how this game is played, this month Intel wins, next month AMD wins. Intel finaly has a CPU that can meet AMD in performance, effeciancy, and price so right now we all win! I don't think you could go wrong with either CPU, even conroe doens't beat the fx-62 by very much in most of the things that it does win at. the real choice is going to be in mainboard features/preformance... a crappy mobo with either cpu won't get you a very nice system.
Wry Cooter @ Jun 15th 2006 2:05AM
What's next from AMD depends on the rumor about them buying ATI, does it not?
Anyway, Dell is bummed because they do not get first dibs on the Intel silicon anymore, and are tired of being tied into Intel's anticompetitor agreements that kept them from offering more AMD in the first place.
Comrade Penguin @ Jun 15th 2006 8:08AM
Your all arguing over top of the line processors but ultimately this isn't what Dell will be using in most of their machines. Intel may well regain the performance crown at the top end but I think it is unlikely they'll match AMD at the lower to middle end for bang for buck and thats the market Dell is in.
GhostDoggy @ Jun 15th 2006 8:45AM
And when OSX still runs hot and slow using AMD, Apple plans on selling iVistas computers and Steve will bed Bill, thus displacing Mrs. Gates.
