Sony unveils "world's smallest" LED projector
The mere claim of "world's smallest" almost guarantees there's something floating around that's smaller still, but we can't really recall spying anything in production quite as tiny as Sony's new LED projector. Using three backlit 0.62-inch LCDs and a whopping 14 LEDs of various colors, the projector can output a 800 x 600 image at an acceptable brightness. If you set it up with Sony's proprietary screen technology that helps reject ambient light, the model can display an almost LCD-ish 292cd/m2 brightness across a 20-inch display area, but we can't think many people will be interested in the 58cd/m2 brightness you'll be seeing on normal screens. No word on price, availability or even model number, but we'll keep an eye out for eye-strained, space saving home theater enthusiasts.

At first sight I actually thought it's the pen which is projecting the image.
Oh well, have to wait a couple of years more.

No, it was the coin.

Now if only UWB could gets its act together to get rid of those cables. Oh, and is this one of those products where the AC adaptor is larger than the actual product?

"Oh, and is this one of those products where the AC adaptor is larger than the actual product?"
Of course! It's sitting on top of its power supply. Just kidding. I have no idea. But since it's LED based, I'm guessing it doesn't need that hulking of a power supply?

Bah, I have a Photon LED light on my keychain that's much smaller... both in terms of physical size (about as big as an almond) and in resolution (one pixel). I'm sure there are even smaller ones out there.

I would definitely use something like this for Lost Film Fest events because of the portability... Where can I get one?

Hmm.. pair this projector with a Video Ipod (with a suitable connection between them) and voila - IProjector!!
You heard it from me first, folks!

Wow, it projects onto a whopping 20" dedicated screen!
Yale R @ Jun 14th 2006 5:22PM
Sony will try anything, as long as they can tie it to a proprietary tech. The screen will cost double a regular screen (but I'm not bitter).

20"? At twenty inches, why bother? I mean, a little projector that fits in my pocket AND projects a 60" image clearly, I'd pay money for, but this? I don't think so.

This will actually come in handy with organizations and with teachers/professors who actually need to use projectors for presentations. It's small and light, easy to carry with a laptop. Now, will the people who actually use something like this be able to afford it?
Guruboy @ Jun 15th 2006 9:21AM
It's 20" at that brightness. The size gets exponentially bigger as you move the projecter back (think of a triangle) so you could move it back slightly more and still get an acceptable brightness over 200 cd/m2. Let's assume that screen in the picture is 2 meters away from the projecter. Through law of cosines, law of cosines, law of sines I determined that pulling the projecter back another half meter would yield a screen about 35". Another half meter after that makes a 42" screen. Get the picture? (no pun intended).
Who's going to want a 60" screen from a projecter you bought for the size and portability?

Sony Projector + Mac Mini
Oh ya!
Will @ Jun 18th 2006 1:34PM
Price?
Matt M @ Jun 19th 2006 1:55PM
Hook it to the mac mini in my dash along with some pre-programmed buttons on my dash to display comments on the inside of my back window to bad drivers as I pass by. Things like "Back Off!" or "Your car stinks!"

Now why would you want this one from Sony?
