GlobalSat TR-101 GPS phone for easily misplaced children
Thanks GlobalSat, we we're starting to think the worrying-parent market was drying up a bit. After that first wave of GPS kiddie phones hit, the feature set has been slowly sinking into the everyphone, which doesn't allow for that special self-importance that comes to a child owner of a stripped-down tracking phone. The TR-101 allows for calls to 3 preset numbers, and sends location data via SMS or over the Internet. It uses a full-on SiRF Star III chipset, and can be remote controlled via other phones or through Online software. There's also an SOS button for emergencies, Google Earth integration for visualisation, and quad-band GSM support to keep track of the little bugger all over the globe. No word on price or availability.

Horray for 0 independence, responsibility, and fun!!! Horray for a future of fat men and woman living at home with their mothers and not moving enough to keep the population going!!! WHOOPIE!
Ah yes, time for the not-parents to pass judgement on things about which they know absolutley nothing.
yep

Jeez, Casey, relax. I would like my kids to have these instead of a chip implanted. If you have kids, you probably would want them to have one too in case of emergency. So mellow out.
Besides, the kid can always leave their "phone" where they are supposed to be if they are trying to mischevious.
Duh.
I now picture Paul Giamatti sitting in front of a monitor in a darkened and desolate office, staring at a Google Earth map of some kid's location yelling into his headset "get out of there, man! GET OUT OF THERE!"
Once again, I can't understand why such phones have to be so limited. Make a GPS-totting, full-featured phone. Same safety for the kids, and decent cellphone functionality.
we dont need something like this. It's a bit much. Seriously, if you need this to know where your kids are, then you aren't fit to be a parent to begin with.
We didn't have GPS to track our kids >5 years ago, and people did fine.
If you don't trust your kids to be honest with you, you shouldn't be letting them go out. And if you really need them to have something in case of an emergency (which I do believe most should have) give them a REAL cellphone, with which they can call more people in case the 3 aren't available.
The first comment was a bit of over-reaction, but most people get these for young children who shouldn't be alone to begin with. It's a tad ridiculous.
Exactly which planet are living in?
Unfortunate events (like ABDUCTION!) happen even to the most perfect kids .I wonder if you are glued to your child every second.
I think you just committed a fallacy of "sweeping generalization", that any parent who buys this gadget does not trust their kids. It is not only the issue of trust but the safety/protection of our kids.
I think that any parent who rationalizes like you is the one who is NOT fit to be a parent. Because you as a parent should provide the safety among other things. If not, then in the worst situation, you may just have committed NEGLECT.
I believe that more than 5 years ago, child abduction has already been on the rise---this is not a falacy but a fact.
I don't have much money but but my kid's safety is priceless. I feel bad for those who had an unfortunate event as a child.
Lets just hope that it is tough enough to stabd up to all the abuse that many kids will put it through
Well said Casey on first and second comments. Some people just don't get it. They think TECHNOLOGY is their savior to EVERYTHING!
Too bad everybody who is posting here didnt have some sort of GPS tracking device when THEY were kids!
Tisk, tisk tisk, Like I said, some people just don't get it!
I wish I had one of these 25 years ago when that pervert dragged me into the woods and attempted to rape me as a little boy. I tell you what... My kids will have one. That kind of BS is much more common than most people realize.
I am not sure if we need this for kids. But a device similar to this can be helpful to spot Alzheimer patients with wandering problem. It is better be in the form of a wrist watch.
Ugh, why don't they forget about crap like this and stick GPS in Wi-Fi digicams instead ;)
If I'd have gotten one of these as a kid, it woulda been packaged up and sent to another country inside about 2 days. And the whole time I was in my room playing, my parents would have the Kansas State Police searching for me.
Has anyone actually tried it? Does it really weigh .4 kg? Considering it for an elderly hunter.
