Yeah, we've seen
waterproof SD cards before. In fact, as things rapidly commodify,
waterproofing seems to have become the new
pink-standard of the witless, marketeer. Still, these super happy, go fast, AD-SDH SD cards from ADTec Japan
are quick with a high-speed transfer rate of 20MB/sec -- ideal for smooth video capture or support for rapid stills shot under the soggiest of conditions. On sale any day now in Japan starting at ¥2,980 (about $26) for the 512MB stick on up to ¥8,980 (or $77) for the 2GB jobbie.

do they actualy have to DO anything to make them waterproof? I mean, they are pretty much sealed anyway, and solid state, so the only way water could hurt a "non-waterproof" one would be to stick it in the camera wet (unless the liquid that wets it is corrosive, but are the waterproof ones resistant to that anyway?) and then the camera isn't waterproof on the INSIDE anyway.
what's the point?

"what's the point?"
Ever forget something in your pockets and then had it go through the laundry? Yes, electronics go through the wash. Last week I forgot my PSP headphones in some shorts I had worn and my girlfriend did the laundry. To my surprise the headphones and in-line remote still work!

The "waterproofing" is probably similar to that spray undercoating used car salesmen tried to pass off to their unwitting customers over the years.

That's what chris means oshean. There is no point in saying it's waterproof. You can send an SD card through the washer and dryer, and stick it in your camera/PDA/MP3 player/etc., and it will still work. You can stick a waterproof watch in a waterproof case, but why would you? There's no point in waterproofing what's already waterproof.

well, the reason electronics are typically screwed up only when they are wetted with current passing through the pathways insisde...
i would think that SD's wouldnt be too screwed up by water as long as theyre not being powered

The Sandisk Extreme III CompactFlash (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1024)-SanDisk_Extreme_III_CompactFlash.aspx) is from expreience laundry proof.

Waterproofing the SD card won't make the camera waterproof though. I think many SD card are already waterproof.

What you can eat and quickly expel a normal SD card and it will still work. Marketing crap…

ATP has been making fast, waterproof cards for years.

I accidentally washed a non-"waterproof" SD card a couple of years back, went thru the dryer as well... still works like a charm.
This is nothing more than a gimmick.
