Gamepark Holdings releases GP2X breakout board
Good news for GP2X owners: Gamepark Holdings (not to be confused with Gamepark, makers of the similarly-named XGP) has just released a breakout board that will turn your handheld console into a fully-functional, albeit underpowered, home PC. The board plugs into the EXT port on your device and features audio and video outs for hooking up an external monitor and sound system, four USB ports for attaching keyboards, mice, and joysticks, and RS232 and Jtag connectors for reflashing your firmware or running a debugging script on software you've developed. Although the kit -- available now for just $46 -- can be employed to create a home DivX or digital audio system, it will probably be most widely used in building emulation cabinets around the open-source, Linux-powered player. This is awesome, although it should be noted this is the developer's version, the production version will feature a casing and will be for sale starting August 2006 (according to play-asia).
I'm definately buying this, as the GP2X is capible of USB-master.

Could I use this thing to power my MAME cabinet? Sounds nicer than using a PC and MAME. Why don't I get the low priced GP2X and the breakout board.

The only downside is that the system itself isn't that powerful. It'll work fine for older MAME games but more recent games most than likely won't fare well.

this is hot shit. I am addicted to my GP2X. And it plays basically every NEOGEO game I have at good speed, genesis emu is pitch perfect, along with 720x480 XVID with up to 228 KBPS MP3 it is definitely capable. Get a cheap hard drive and the power cable and you have a portable PC. Keyboard is awesome for PDA functions... That's what the DS needs is a good PDA app

I'm glad they finally decided to do this, but I can't help but think it would have been better if the unit had USB host support from the factory.
