Microsoft to team with Samsung on 22-inch LCD for Vista?
We were just getting used to that whole wave of 21-inch LCDs, when it looks like 22-inchers are going to be the hip new thing in the coming months. A new report is out claiming that Microsoft is working with Samsung to produce a special 22-inch widescreen LCD to work with Windows Vista and be branded with the Microsoft logo. Sounds like they're trying to promote widescreen monitor usage with their new OS, and we're guessing Microsoft wouldn't mind making a few bucks while they're at it. The word from Chi Mei Optoelectronics makes us think that Microsoft and Samsung aren't the only ones to get the 22-inch bug. Dell has reportedly just made a large order for 22-inch widescreen panels from CMO, and LG.Philips and AU are jumping on board as well. There's no telling how heavily Microsoft is going to be recommending 22-inch displays to the users of Aero, but it doesn't look like anybody wants to be left out.[Thanks, Mr. Kaiser and Will P.]

I just wish they would remove their heads from their nethers and get onboard with 16:9 A/R instead of 16:10. All 16:10 does is distort or add bars to standard HD/widescreen content.
(nb: I knwo that many films come out in formats wider than 16:9, but then again, 16:10 would only make that worse as well...)

A widescreen display branded with the logo of the company that makes the operating system? I wonder where they got this idea from...

Any word on the resolution?
Good bye 20 inch iMac, hello 22 inch (just an idea)!
bigmiz @ Jun 29th 2006 4:40PM
resolution? i think its pointless to have a display that big and be limited to 1600

I think 24" widescren is sexier. ;)

I couldn't afford something like that. I'm still stuck on a 15 incher.
Big Sam @ Jun 29th 2006 5:16PM
I assume it will have HDCP compliant HDMI (or DVI)
fahmi @ Jun 29th 2006 5:18PM
why can't they make an LCD with very thin frame (almost invisible)?? and hide all the buttons below or at the back. that'll be one sexy display.

Microsoft DubDeuce?

What's the point? Is it just to say that it supports HDCP and therefore enables HD content to be played with Vista?
Copy protection via software is stupid, it only hinders legit users, pirates seem to be able to crack anything.
Hardware copy-protection is a joke. They are making us upgrade thousands of quids worth of hardware just to watch a video we've BOUGHT?
Joe public really needs to stand up against this rubbish. Seriously.

I've often wondered why the 20.1" widscreens were 1680 x 1050, not 1080
If this supports 1080i then I think it's a great idea
cycomachead @ Jun 29th 2006 9:04PM
I think a monitor for an OS stupid what diffference would the display make

Vista has a lot of new features geared towards photography and DVD creating templates and the like... I'm sure that has something to do with it?
henstar @ Nov 20th 2006 10:51AM
probably so that Vista's "new" widget feature won't take up too much desktop real estate
