Sony wouldn't trademark "PooS," would they?
We love Sony, so naturally we tend to give 'em a hard time. It's nothing personal, that's just the pecking order; we just hold them in such high regard that when they slip up, say something stupid, or just do that thing they always seem to do to piss off their customers, we're there to give 'em a slap on the wrist -- just like we would other any company. This time we're going to have to give them the benefit of the doubt -- we want to give them the benefit of the doubt, because we really don't want to believe Sony would drop the infinity sign (which, of course, closely resembles an toppled figure 8) between the P and S (we presume for PlayStation) in a supposed trademark application they filed for their PlayStation controller with the Japanese patent office. We can't prove this is actually legit, but that's the word on the street according to GameFront.de, whose PooS logo image (above) doesn't even look close to the regular PlayStation / Spiderman type we know they've become so anal about using everywhere. Our advice: don't believe the infinite amounts of hype, until further notice we're calling BooS on this one.

PooS and Wii... What is it with console companies and potty references?
Nin10dude @ Jun 30th 2006 9:46PM
God, Sony, we knew you liked to copy Nintendo, but... wow.
Adam S @ Jun 30th 2006 9:50PM
Wouldn't an inverted 8 be 8?
DidYouLoseASock @ Jun 30th 2006 9:55PM
Right before the PSP came out didn’t Sony trademark like a whole bunch of crazy stuff with the PSP in it?
RazorElite @ Jun 30th 2006 9:56PM
That's just unfortunate.
IK @ Jun 30th 2006 10:06PM
lol tyler
I think that the infinity sign will much smaller in comparison to the P and the S, so it will not look like "PooS"
Wii is a wicked name, so much better than Xbox.
Shogan @ Jun 30th 2006 10:11PM
I think they are coppying Nintendo again.

Stu L Tissimus @ Jun 30th 2006 11:11PM
That logo's a POS.
Predator @ Jun 30th 2006 11:12PM
I don't know why, but the first time I read it as Piece of **** ( POS instead of POOS ) Is it just me or are stupid names the norm these days?
Jones @ Jun 30th 2006 11:22PM
Now you can lay a PooS and have a Wii next to your girlfriends micro-SOFT xBox!
HA HA
ok, I'm done.
Darkn @ Jun 30th 2006 11:26PM
Well they're ripping another idea off of Nintendo,
it was Wii for Nintendo and now Poos for Sony.
Do I detect that names of bodily functions are
becoming the fad these days???
Shogan @ Jun 30th 2006 11:30PM
The Microsoft handheld will probably be called the Vadge.
Revrant @ Jun 30th 2006 11:46PM
The International Rofflehouse @ Shogan.
My Lawd, seriously Sony, drop that, the hilarious backlash is worth it for me, and everyone else, but not for you!

Sukato @ Jul 1st 2006 2:41AM
Yep. Sony's a bunch of Lemmings. Or sheep. Whichever analogy you prefer.
neXus @ Jul 1st 2006 3:13AM
Geez... what a stupid name.
dreamer @ Jul 1st 2006 6:13AM
Guys and girls, relax. Seriously, give it just a little thought: "P" and "S" obviously stand for "PlayStation". They cram the infinity sign somewhere in between the two letters to get the trademark granted. It's a safe bet to say it will be a graphical play they don't want used by 3rd party vendors or abused by others. And not a new name.
TC @ Jul 1st 2006 6:21AM
I think it should be read as P "Infinity" S, or P.I.S. Hang on a minute...
teamsteve @ Jul 1st 2006 6:26AM
This has got to be a hoax. Noone's dumb enough to release a product called PooS
...are they?
William K @ Jul 1st 2006 6:56AM
This is when Nintendo reveal that the reason that their console was called Wii was to see how far Sony were willing to copy them.
LuckyT @ Jul 1st 2006 10:44AM
The infinity symbol is a "control character" used by the Japanese trademark office to indicate placement of characters etc. It's not actually part of the trademark, the trademark is just "PS", and the provided pronunciation of the mark confirms that. Another trademark by Sony is "§P∞S", the famous original 'PS' trademark. § and ∞ are just trademark office control symbols.
Zadillo @ Jul 1st 2006 11:25AM
In all seriousness though, if P[infinity]S was real, how exactly are you supposed to pronounce it?
Nico @ Jul 1st 2006 11:57AM
This is not real. The infinity sign has been used for online titles, at least in europe, for ages. If anything it will be PS - infinity, not PooS ffs...
And to you people who say Sony is copying the Wii sorry, but like I said the infinity sign has been used for many years here in europe. I know Sony bashing is fun for you guys but get a life please, commeters not engadget.

toppled = inverted? since when?

I still don't see why the name matters. This name is the middle ground between the AYDS diet pills and the Wii, if it's a good product I don't care.
Jedi Master @ Jul 1st 2006 9:36PM
Only the bright (and socially inept) minds over at sony could completely screw an attempt to say "Playstation is the Shit!", whilst including a mathematical symbol.
To those bastards over at Sony, I salute you!
Next up, the Microsoft Aenis
OBloodyHell @ Jul 2nd 2006 1:46AM
Kinda like the original logo for the Microsoft w98 add-on called "Plus" -- the original logo had the letters in different colors and not on a line. The thing was, the "l" was in black, which, in the context, the eye sort of ignored as background noise, which meant it looked like "Microsoft Pus".
Apparently someone else noticed this, too, as the logo was subsequently revised to have a colored "l" instead of a black one.

you are a dumbass.
Guruboy @ Jul 2nd 2006 8:57AM
yeah Wii in no way resembles V...I have no idea where that came from. If they wanted to go that far into the idea, they would have named it "GO", which is 5 (as ion fifth console) in Japanese (the sound, at least) and is less easy to make fun of.
df @ Jul 2nd 2006 9:34AM
Haha...you said poos. Piece Of Overpriced Stuff?
Jacen_Solo @ Jul 2nd 2006 12:24PM
Why would anyone name their piece of electronics equipment "[something] infinity"? I mean this is really stupid even for Sony, and not because of the similarity to "PooS".
So you go ahead and add "infinity" to the devices name, knowing full well in a year or two (maybe as far off as five years), someone will inevitably create a more powerful, useful, popular [**insert device here**]. Shouldn't a device that boasts the name "infinity" be infinitely more powerful [for all time] than any competition.
It will indeed be ironic if they choose to go through with this name. The name just begs for somebody to de-throne the device. If Sony is so prideful as to use such a moniker, I hope that Microsoft or Nintendo make them pay dearly for their conceit.
"Infinity" is much better left as an abstract mathematical concept, but if one insists on using it as a name, it should probably only be applied to more subjective, long-term items (jewelry: gold, platinum, diamonds).

The Xcrement will be dumped world wide on the 21 November 2006.
mike @ Jul 3rd 2006 10:33PM
Wee is how you pronounce the letter "v" in latin
Latin was spoken by romans
V is 5 in roman numerals
This is what he meant
By the way, I've had three years of Latin
MiKe @ Jul 5th 2006 7:59AM
I doubt sony would even think of using P [infinity ] S. It would really hard to make it look good.
Shaun @ Jul 11th 2006 3:47PM
Xcrement360, now there's a funny bit of linear thinking. I busted a gut reading it. Nice job.
Scorpious @ Jul 18th 2006 2:49PM
I believe that a while back I read that the PS3, in it's early development phase, was either codenamed Infinity, or they were considering naming it the Infinity. Personally I think they should call it the Sony Infinity, and drop the Playstation name completely... but that's just me.
And as far as this being Nintendo's 5th console... it's technically the 7th. The first Nintendo console, the NES Famicom, wasn't the same system as the NES. And then they re-released the NES with the SNES-style cartridge slot. So, maybe they were going for "VII" with the Wii name?
I dunno, I'm just making random guesses. Don't mind me.
