Samsung's Yepp YP-T9 with Bluetooth hits FCC

Looks like Samsung has a new one in the works; their YP-T9 DAP just got its FCC approval and it's looking mighty nice. The Yepp player measures 0.43-inches thick, and weighs a mere 1.7 ounces, but Samsung still managed a few extras. Most notable is the Bluetooth support for using wireless headphones, but there's plenty of other stuff like FM radio, voice recording, MP3/WMA/OGG support, photo and text viewing, and two full color 3D games. You can also play back 15fps videos at a 208 x 176 resolution, be we think we'll pass, thanks. Samsung claims 30 hours of music playback and 7 hours for video, but of course we have no idea as to when Samsung is planning on releasing this thing. Keep reading for more FCC glamour shots.

I have one of these i bought in Korea.
I love it, you can put videos etc on it.
you can record from the radio and save it to mp3.
i love the size, the ease of features, and for me it works great.
if i had to find a negative, i do not know how to put new games on it.
my coworkers want one today.

nice . but whats the capacity nethin less than 30 gb is 2 less 4 me so iam gonna pass. i am more then happy with 60 gb ipod. i hate listenin to fm and have no use for games because i have both psp and ds. so its not of much use to me. i hate it when neone calls ne goddamn mp3 player as an ipod killer. get a life. an ipod is gonna exist no matter what u say. bring out some novelty. and how bout shippin the thing with bluetooth headphones. instead of payin 150$ for a pair

I hate fanboys... They're immature and well, jealous and insecure. See comment by 'dhruv' above. Also, I hate pretentious people. In any case, since this fellow has no intention of buying this player or any interest in it whatsoever, his post is nothing more than an iPod-fanboy rant. Now I love an iPod as much as the next guy. I have an old 15GB one and I still think its a great little thing. But I don't go parading about it and lash out at anybody who doesn't like it! This is Engadget. Not War-Of-The-Fanboys. Post your rants somewhere else. Unless you have something relevant to say about the post, DON'T POST. I realize this posting in its self is a rant, but this is, as I see it, necessary to PREVENT further rants.

There are a few reasons I dislike iPods. There are a few reasons I like them. But there's only one reason I LOVE iPods - there are no logos on the front surface! This Samsung actually looks nice (and I generally dislike their phones and other stuff).
If only they removed that huge and ugly "yepp"...Please... ;-)

The logo isn't all that bad. This pint-sized player looks good enough, but 30 hourse battery life - in your dreams (or possibly only while listening to 64 kbps MP3's)

I'm not too impressed by the looks so far, but I'd be interested in a decent player that supports Bluetooth headphones. I'm tired of untangling wires all the time. I guess we'll see what the reviews say when it comes out.

actually, i think this players lookin awesome. Its always a good sign when the headphone jack is haning over the edge of it :)

haha however, I'm not in the market for a small-capacity player, though I would definitley recommend this to people such as my sister who are more concerned about running with his or her player then having a large music data-base

i'm an ipod / mac fanboy (if ya wanna call it that - its just that im a very satisfied apple customer as i would be of any other company that made consistantly good products) and i also use a samsung pphone which is adequate at best, i have a few more months left on its contract until i have to make a new decision on a phone, i would like to see something from apple obviously but i cant see them making a conventional cell phone, though i can see them integrating voip into the ipod range to integrate with the voip in ichat in leopard wirelessly, redifining a new(ish) emerging market. well see, whatever will be will be.

I have been looking into the most recent Samsung mp3 players and theyre fairly decently priced, along with being sturdy looking as well. I would be a pretty happy camper if these came in a varying range of capacities. I would also like ot know: plastic or metal?

I need to know the capacities these will offer before i even get interested.
Most likely going for the 3GB flash to jump in the Nano market.

bluetooth will support AVRCP and A2DP, and can be remote controlled by the upcoming blade rev A "SPH-A900P".

also, stupid apple fanboys talking about 30gb capacity, this thing uses NAND, not a garbagey hard drive. less storage per dollar, but better on battery, better on heat, better on not skipping, and noiseless.

also, the yepp logo isn't terrible. especially if samsung throws in AVRCP(and A2DP) and lets me keep the player in my pocket and remote control it(and listen to it) with a phone.

I had an ipod mini and it would freeze up while I was driving. Since it has no hard reset button, there was no way to reset it until I got home, soft reset was useless. I loved the ipod when I got it, but towards the end of it's life (at the hands of my bedroom wall) all my love converted to unbridled hatred.
If you love the ipod, good for you, but don't prance around pretending like what works for you is grand for all. I see the mentality of their commecials catches on with the masses.
I've been dying for bluetooth to become more standard in DAPs. Samsung answered my call, kudos to Samsung, even though I hate their cellphones.

Crammed with features but with the aesthetics of a troll..
Really, Samsung products look SO bad..
Now look at the iPod Nano, its not like it has the world's coolest features or anything, but it's got killer looks..

I really really wish Samsung will start to make better looking products..with more 'class' ...

I understand that this is nowhere what im supposed to be talking about, but i just wanted to say something about Samsung's horrenous design..

Coming to the technology, cant agree more with dave about NAND..
If they insist on hiking the price for bluetooth, i hope they make sure that the music can be updated using bluetooth, otherwise its just a waste.
With a few tweaks, and if possible - the bluetooth related feature, and a total design overhaul..this is something i'd seriously consider to replace my Nano, which is scratching faster than charging - and thats BAD.

PS: Dogpatch, as long as we are stereotypifying, arent you that guy whose just bitter because he's DUMB, can remember the latest *insert inane sport* scores better than his address, calles customer service to help with battery-replacement and oh, ofcourse can't differentiate between 'Get LOST, loser!' and 'Oh Baby, YEAAH'

Problem is, I have a Mac and I honestly never know if anything BUT an iPod will work with it. Seriously.

I love Apple computers but I'm not really a fan of the iPod. Not enough going for them, for me. I have a 15GB 3G and folks at work have everything from minis to nanos to 5g iPods - I'm just not turned on by any of them.

This, having an a2dp BT audio profile is killer, especially for working out. No wires!

If it worked with a mac, I'd probably swing in its direction.

Do people really thing Bluetooth headphones will catch on? A Google search for reviews found people are only get 5-6 hours of listen time out of these (out of a manufactures spec of 6-8 hours). See link for example.

Samsung being the market leader in NAND, will surely bring out better models with less power dependency.

Since i dont have an ipod or a samsung DAP.. How is the audio quality of the non-Ipods..? Is it better or closer to an iPod.

Regardless, my point is DAPs generally have, or should have, greater than 12 hours of play time. Bluetooth headphones probably will never have much more than 6 hour play time for at least the next 5-10 years. Since they have to drive both the Bluetooth receiver and the headphone speaker amp section all in a package as small as a standard headphone. Which means you will have to carry along a set of earbuds just in case the BT headphones crap out. If that is so, what is the point. I still don't see this being more than a niche market.

IMO, the only ipod that EVER looked cool was the G3. Nano is the ugliest of the bunch, again IMO.

And cry-me-an-iriver, I do not want you to read this as mean. I am calmly asking to provide proof that shows Leopard will "natively" run Windows programs. In its Wikipedia article, it says it has Boot Camp,but doesn't mention any built-in Windows emulation. If it does, I hope for you Mac people's sake that it works better than WINE (a decent program, but it has its flaws.

And for people who talk about battery life, do you really need more than 6 hours? I have a MyFi, which lasts about 5 hours, and it's fine. How long are you going to be away from your charger? This seems to be an epidemic among ipod people, they never charge up. That's bad! Avoid completely discharging the battery at all costs. You may not believe it, but it's better to charge up every day than it is to charge ONLY after you've hit bottom. I charge everything I have nightly.

I currently have a Samsung YP-Z5 and I love it. I don't know what some of these people are saying, that samsung doesn't make "sexy looking" DAPs. Check out the Z5, its a beauty. As for the audio quality on it, in comparison to my friends Nano and Zen (can't remember the model) they all sound about the same, yet Cnet rated the Z5 as having better quality than the Ipod.

As for this device it looks like it will be nice and I love the idea of bluetooth, for headphones and transfers (Don't know if this will be possible). as for its battery life Samsung way over estimates everything. I'll expect it to get around 12-15 hours with everyday life use, but thats still pretty good.

I know I sound like a Samsung fanboy, but these are just my opinions.

I find the player really cool and I can't wait to get one. Unlike any of the people buy it for wireless headphones, I'm buying it because I have a BT car stereo and I want to save on the hassle of installing an ipod adapter. And I can control my mp3 player directly from the car's stereo. This is the main reason why I want the industry to make a BT mp3 player. I don't care about the cellphone answering on the player or even the stupid wireless headphones. I just want to listen to my music in the car without having to burn a great amount of cds.

grrr............nobody's releasing any info on what profiles the T9 supports. samsung told me they dont give details on as-yet-unreleased players, and since I just got a free SPH-A900 phone, I really want to know if I can remote control the T9 with the phone, because for me, that will make or break the purchase.

And as far as sexy goes, I'll have to agree with kevin M on the G3 iPod being the only apple player that looked STUNNING and that the nano looks groady. I still have my old 10GB G3'pod in my desk drawer. This device looks just as sleek, if not sleeker, than the iPod nano could dream to look, and the nano's so out of proportion that the touch wheel looks like a malformed nipple.


anyway, bottom line of my opinion, this thing if it supports AVRCP and A2DP + software update for the A900 that includes AVRCP and A2DP = gadget geeks like me telling iPod and RAZR fanboys where to shove it.
