Eurocom's D900K "F-bomb" gaming notebook reviewed
Okay, so right off the bat: do they even know what it means to drop the f-bomb in Canada? We've seen a lot of ridiculously-named products around here -- Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PooS come immediately to mind -- but this Eurocom model, with its allusion to the most hardcore cuss word in the English language, is by far one of the worst. Besides the unfortunate branding, however, the company's 17-inch D900K gaming notebook sounds like a pretty good performer; according to MobilityGuru the dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 processor and nVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 GTX graphics card help it to achieve pretty impressive benchmark results. You're also getting a 1,920 x 1,200 resolution display, DVD burner, 802.11a/b/g, DVI out, and 4-in-1 card reader for the $3,500 pricetag, though the 5,200 RPM hard drive and 1GB of pokey 200MHz DDR RAM keep this rig from delivering the outstanding results you'd get from a machine like Dell's XPS M1710. Still, if you can't afford a Dell (we never thought we'd actually say that) and don't mind lugging around 15 pounds of gear to get your mobile computing on, you may not find this particular F-bomb to be all that offensive.

I guess this is one f-bomb I wouldn't be afraid to drop in public (so long as it's still under warranty).

I think F-Bomb is a wonderful name! Gonna drop the f-bomb at my next big LAN party I think.

Okay to answer your question... you bet we know what F-bomb means in Canada! We probably coined the phrase (well maybe not, but we like it). And as far as a bad product name: if I have a kick-a** gaming laptop, why not express it with some gusto! I'd buy this one BECAUSE it's the F-bomb.
What is more unfortunate is the company name, Eurocom. Last time I checked Canada is not part of Europe.

Clevo FTW!!!

Case looks exactly the same as Alienware's 7700 series. (From a remorseful buyer of said product.)
spil @ Jul 11th 2006 2:09PM
first the wii, then the racist psp ad (even if it was an "accident"), then the PooS, and now the f-bomb. I think every one is trying to think up the wierdest names/marketing ideas so they will grab your attention, whether it be posotive or negative. Either that or these people's marketing dept. is not up to date with the english language

"the most hardcore cuss word in the English language" ? uh... the c-bomb.
Ferny @ Jul 11th 2006 2:26PM
anyone else notice it doesn't even have the xp theme?
daniel @ Jul 11th 2006 2:27PM
That is way over priced.
I got a Dell e1705 for $$2,066, but it ended up being $1,394.96 after taxes and coupon.:
Intel Core DuoProcessor T2500 (2GHz/667MHz FSB)
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
512MB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800
100GB 5400RPM SATA HD
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps)
Integrated High Definition Audio, for XPS M1710
80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
I threw in 2gb or 667 Patriot ram for about $200 and now Dell is sending me a 7900 GS replacement card FOR FREE!
Go with Dell, better deals than the effing f-bomb.

Now, that looks identical to my alienware m7700 notebook. The front panel with speakers and display, the touchpad location and configuration, the speakers on either side of the keyboard, the fact that is has a numberpad on the keyboard, and the power button. EXACTLY THE SAME. Makes you wonder.

The notebook case and mobo itself is made by a company called clevo that sells to alienware, sager, and a ton of other small companies. I think that particular model was a bit of a brick. I like the newer silverish 17" model Sager is sporting. The Sager NP5760 - V yummy stuff. Might get one soon.
binaryvisions @ Jul 11th 2006 2:57PM
Ferny, uh, maybe they turned it off?
Let's add the Pentax *ist to the list of poorly named products. Not only is it unpronouncable, it's difficult for the average person to search for without turning up every -ist word in the world because of the wildcard.

Why the hell is the trackpad set off to the left? I already can't stand most PC laptop's tiny trackpads, but then you go and set it off towards the OPPOSITE side of where I normally put my right hand? I naturally put my hand on the RIGHT side of my keyboard for mousing, why would I want to put it UNDERNEATH where my left hand is supposed to be while typing?
Alex @ Jul 11th 2006 4:18PM
jps, the trackpad is to the left because it's centered under the keyboard (minus the number pad). My ProStar 4754 (an older Clevo model) is the same way, and I like it.
ACD @ Jul 11th 2006 4:55PM
What's with the specs on this? I've seen others selling this type of unit from Clevo rigged with the AMD FX-62 and NVIDIA 7900 graphics chip. I take it that this F-bomb is supposed to be a budget mobile computer. The RAM is a killer on a lot of these though. I have no idea why they don't or can't put better RAM on an AMD FX-62 mobile computer. What better way to ruin an otherwise powerful mobile computer than to put total crap RAM in it. I'll shell out for a Dell XPS mobile with the new Intel Core 2 Extreme and NVIDIA 7950 GX2, if that combination is even possible.
Tull @ Jul 11th 2006 5:14PM
Looks like a pretty garbage rig if you ask me. Expensive for what you're actually getting compared with alot of other notebook manufacturers, and why would they shove DDR-200 in there? Doesn't make much sense. I think I'll stick with my Asus S96J, definitely a nicer lappy then this, and about $2k cheaper.
Case @ Jul 11th 2006 5:36PM
See this is a sager laptop alienware and wurocom like many others all buy sager laptop www.sagernotebooks.com and lable it as thier own.... why pay more what youcan get for less from powernotebooks.com
noobs

wow, it's way too thin. It looks like it's only about 3 inches thick. Any self-respecting pc gamer knows a laptop should be 4-5 inches thick. At least they got the weight part right. Cause laptops under 10lbs are for girls. Oh, and it should have lots of blinky lights and neon. Chrome plating is good too. Even better, gold plating. And maybe curb feelers.
In other words, a true pc gamer laptop should be configured so that it will also serve as an effective anti-female/date device.

I regularly use 3 machines - and IBM/WinXP/Laptop, HP/Linux/Tower, and Apple/OS X/Laptop. Of these, the nicest machine in my experience is the Apple (Powerbook G4). One of the common negatives about Apple is the price. I don't think this machine even matches my 3 year old Powerbook and people actually said good things about it. It sounds like an overpriced piece of crap to me but I guess it gets a pass if it can run all of those PC games.

The inappropriate name "F-Bomb" reminds me of the recently released broom from Swiffer that they've dubbed "The Dirty Sanchez."
Patrick @ Jul 12th 2006 3:41PM
That is one "fugly" ass computer. Not only would I drop that F-Bomb... I'd throw it.
