HP's Compaq Presario v6000 laptop
HP has more laptop love for us today, this time with some of that Compaq branding. It's nothing new in the design department, but the shiny new v6000 has a fresh model number, and accompanies the v3000 with more budget laptop goodness. It's replacing the v5000 models, but there's nothing too terribly exciting to see here. The units feature AMD Turion 64 X2 and Mobile or AMD Sempron processors, and eke by with a GeForce Go 6150 graphics card. Luckily, the v6000 shines in the little things, featuring a 5-in-1 card reader, Firewire, three USB 2.0 ports, ExpressCard/54 slot, 802.11a/b/g WiFi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, most of those features are optional, and it sounds like the barebones version of this PC is very bare indeed. No word on price or exact availability, but at 6.6 pounds, with a 15.4-inch display and some nice new looks, it still shouldn't be a terrible option for the style-conscious consumer on a budget when it does drop.

Well I have to be honest, they were brilliant when i contacted them about my laptop having wireless problems, had it serviced and back in a matter of a week! Perhaps i had a lucky chance and had a person who knew what they were doing in the call center? who knows but I def can't knock their service
When we first got our new V6000 we were so happy! Blue lights and flashy startup .. wow. Four months on we now have a new hard drive and the screen needs replacing. We don't use the laptop for hardcore gaming or intense CAD drawings, just for home and school work. We have Windows Vista Business and the toolbar keeps on wanting to disappear!! Also, the screen often flickers and when it isn't flickering it goes completely dark. Is there no end to this madness?
If anyone has any solutions to these .. "glitches" please feel free to share as it goes off to the hospital again.
i just got this refurbished laptop, the v6000. didn't last a week. the blue power light comes on for like a second then it dies. i've read its probably the motherboard that burned out. it seemed like a great laptop when it was working, but its getting sent back
Gus, there was a post that i found a few weeks ago and the V6000 is one of the worst product ever put out by HP/Compaq or any other company. This is why it was discontinued. There is talk about a lawsuit against Compaq for all the problems that have risen from this product and HP/Compaq just giving the people a run around instead of fixing or replacing the unit. It is a motherboard issue and they can't solve it so they claim so they just discontinued it instead.
Sam,
I hope that there is a lawsuit filed against HP/Compaq for all the problems that have risen from this product. My V6000 is going back on Monday for the third time. It was working fine until the wireless failed.
I contacted HP, sent it in for the repair. I had it back in five days, very impressed. When I opened the box, everything went down hill. First the top of my computer was all scratched. Second the damn thing would not even turn on.
I contacted HP again and explained everything. It went back again. I complained about their customer service and handling of my computer. I told them to either fix it or replace it.
Then they had the nerve to send me a bill for $324.00 to repair the damage that they did. About five phone calls latter I get a case manager and he solves all the problems.
My computer comes back yesterday. Still not working. I call my case manager (it took 3 hours to get him) and vent. He tells me that it is going to have to come in again for repair. I told him that I wanted a new computer; he pretty much told me that was not an option. I asked how many times do you people need to get it right.
I am in a service business and if I treated my customers the way that HP treats theirs, I would not be in business very long.
I am beyond being mad.
John,
Sorry to hear about your problems. I bought the V6000 in July 07 and I have not had a single problem with this laptop. I did not buy the standard features, I customized it. I got a faster processor and some other changes. I love this computer. I payed 1000 bucks for mine and I use it everyday. That's a bummer you got those problems, maybe I got lucky I don't know.
Hello,
Ive had a compaq presario v6000 since last christmas so for about 1 year 2months, my LAN card which is built in suddenly stopped working and was told it could be quite costlsy to fix, so i have now go to hav a USB stick, has this problem happened to anyone else? Apart from this, the lapptop is sound.
I have a Compaq Presario V6000 and have recently discovered the WiFi card has ceased to function, that's Ok I'll buy a card to fit into the PCMCIA slot, but when the card arrived in doesn't fit!!! This is because the plug/socket arrangement on the V6000 has a plastic spacer on the right side at the bottom of slot!! Can anyone tell what type of WiFi card I require to fit in my V6000 PCMCIA slot?

im lekan pls reprocess the new password, i try the former one but it did not open,i dont know what is happeneing.
well i had no idea with all the problems everyone talks about with the presario v6000,mainly its vista... i baught mine about a month ago, shortly after, EVERYONE, and i mean EVERYONE says that the old xp is better than vista...well its kinda late for me to change my mind, unless i want to put xp on my laptop instead of vista, which cost more and more trouble and hassle than the laptop itself...that makes me sick that im stuck with it now...any suggestions anyone?
aiiighhht now this thing is just crap, first off the stupid thing never would make the back up discs, the screen saver never worked in the first place id just get a blank screen if it sat long enough...fine, but it was when the screen would stay blank and not come back on, so i did the only thing i could do, i turned it off, now i got the same problems ive heard up there^. the lights come on, then turn off aft 30 seconds or so, then comes back on again and repeats. So i take it my mother board is fried ehhh??? *kicks it *examines it, oh made in china, first the lead then they send me a crappy computer...thanks HP
HAHAHAHAHA HERE YA GO KIDS...DAMN IM GOOD

I have the V6000...and the motherboard needed replacing (good thing it was under warranty still),,,I guess these have a HUGE problem with the motherboards...Im glad mine was replaced....but I wont by HP again...nope I never want that hassle again....I am unhappy with the HP printer I bought too....always problems......I dont like unreliable products.......................PS I have a beef on where the headphone/speaker jack is on this laptop....um in the FRONT.....stupid place, its in the way
It is very unfortunate that I'm stuck with the HP product.'
I have been an owner now of the V6000 for about 10 months and this product has been away so many times being repaired that I don't even want it back.
Hp tells me that they can't give me a new one they can only keep fixing it but the problem that worries me is that in 2 months the warranty will be over and it will still be borke and I will be stuck with a very unreliable producdt (crappy machine) and no more warranty.
It is unfortuante that HP doesn't look after their customers better than this but this will be the last product from HP or Compaq from me including all of their product line. I guess it's true that when you get so big you lose track of the people that help you get there and you forget who they were. Lucky for us we can also forget who they are as they are plenty of competition out there.
I've had my Compaq Presario V6000 for over a year now, on it every day for very long periods of time and I haven't had a single problem with it.
A few comments, I can easily rest my palms on the laptop without touching the mouse pad. The only way I can see that being a problem for people is if they type with their forearms straight out from their body, and I don't know many people that do.
The power cord I also have never had a problem with. It's not loose at all and have never seen sparks.
The screen brightness is perfect in my opinion. Not too bright and definitely not too dark. When first using the laptop on battery only, it was pretty dark but all I had to do was change the settings. Not a huge deal.
On 1GB of memory it can easily run Windows Vista Home Premium. They do recommend having at least 2GB but I've never had a problem. I can run multiple programs at the same time without it slowing down in the least.
All I can really say is I've used this computer for over a year now. All the while taking care of it properly. Not setting the laptop on my lap unless it's for a short period of time. Always on a hard surface. Cleaning out the vents every now and then with an air compressor made for electronics, to keep the vents clear of dust and yes, cat hair. An overheating laptop is not a happy laptop. Using the power cord correctly, taking out the battery if I plan on just using the AC adapter for a good period of time.
Laptops aren't indestructable, you can't smack them when they aren't doing what you want, you can't be constantly touching the screen when you want to point out something to a friend, and you can't yank it open and let it drop close. It's made of plastic, if your not gentle with it, it will break.
Anyway, I would recommend this computer.
From the looks of it you should have bought a desk top because from what your saying you don't need a laptop if it's never on your lap but on a hard surface. A laptop is meant to be carried around and worked with anywhere, not staying behind at home on a hard surface.
The next time you purchase a computer I would recomend to save yourself some money and pruchase a desktop, because i use it on my laps (thus the reason for the name laptop) and the power cord is always and I mean always giving up, and you won't see sparks as it is not breaking down, it just loses the conection from the computer.
sincerely,
James

My touchpad scroll option is not working. It's the laptop shown above, Presario V6000. It's about a year old now, and I've never had this issue before. has anyone had and resolved the issue?
Also, I don't know if it's just vista or not, but when my battery dies, I don't always get a warning, the computer will just shut down.
Help? Thanks.
is there any way to make the standard dvd player in the v6000 region free??
I will never buy an HP product again.
My son bought this V6000 and nothing but problems since the beginning. Crashed all the time. Thought it was Vista. Now after 14 Months the Hard Drive failed. Warranty over. Never ever will I buy an HP product again.
I got a V6000 exactly a year now (last week made it a year). Its my baby, i wipe it down and take car of it like it was my girlfriend. But it left me this morning.
From day one i had the fan going at high speed at all time and even then the lap top would get hot to the point were u cant keep it in ur lap and would have to turn it off for it to cool down or find the closes fan or a/c room. The only time i didnt hear the fan was wen i arrived in canada in 9 degrees tempreture.
I have never had problem with the power card not pluging in and charging the laptop.
Had a problem with the battery though. After about 3 months i wasnt getting 1 hour out of it and up to yesterday i dont think i could have gotten 30 min out of it.
My screem also makes funny noises when i adjust it leading me to thing that its going bad also.
Had the "dont want to turn on" issue a couple times and i had to pull and place the battery back in it and it was ok again (happend about 2 times to me before)
This morning i got up, plug the power wire in, the led lid up saying that power was flowing, and i push the power button and nothing happend, NOTHING HAPPEND. I tried the battery thing again and nothing. The adapter hasnt event gotten warm to show that the batter is charging (current is flowing through it). The Problem is that im a DJ and have to work tonight and all my music is on my laptop and i dont have any money to buy one on the fly. GOOD DAM IT ON, i just tryied olding down the power botton with it on battery and then plug it in and run my fingers accross the quick play bottons and it came to life, im not turning off this lap top again untill i run and buy an external lap top.
I have had my presario for some time now but the problem is rather recent. I often plug in head phones to watch videos or listen to music but one day after Ipulled out my head phones there was no sound. I tried everything, muting then unmuting, cheking things on the control panel, and everything else i can think of. Another thing about this problem is that when I plug my head phones all the way in only the right side will work, halfway the left, and i hold it kust barely into the jack both work. I've been told that the problem might be the head phones jack, but I'm not sure. Please help!
hi! i have this V6000 and after 14 months my battery pack went dead, can the battery be recon? i have check the sites for batteries but it needs on line orders. i need to purchase it directly on retail shops in penang. any store? thanx
I have had my Presario V6000 for a couple years now. It was the 3rd laptop I went through, Acer was terrible and my 1st Compaq the keyboard sporadically would just start typing on it's own. This one was good at first although I have the same problem with the power cord. My power cord eventually just broke off and was sparking and so I bought a universal one at a computer store. Seems slightly better as the design is different. HOWEVER the more major problems I am having is the hinges are easily worn and creaky. The speakers have recently started to crack and get all fuzzy, and I don't even listen to music on my laptop EVER, I used it for college for a year and as our home computer for emails and Facebook and whatnot. So I don't see how they could be blown when I have hardly used them. And the mousepad on the laptop wears down really easily, within a few months the mouse pad was worn down, decreasing the sensitivity and making the mouse hard to move b/c the center of the mousepad is worn down.
I did register this when I bought it with Compaq and I received an email about defective Compaq computers. Especially those with the start up problems. Go to Compaq's website to determine if your model and serial # are included and they will repair certain glitches for free incl. the shipping I believe. Haven't had any of the mentioned issues as far as being recalled but who knows, the way this thing is falling apart!
i dont have graphic $ hd audio driver. plz give me driver web site

I have the V6000 and have found it not so fast but very suitable for my use. It has had it's problems and is at HP for the one time fix for the bad motherboards and Broadcom adapters (junk). They decided to replace the LCD screen and other unnecessary items which prompted a call to tell them to only do the free repair. Their service is actually a sales dept as we learned after several HP notebooks for our college kids. Fortunately we have several computers to maintain our business but this is a major headache since it was my computer that I do my business on. I should have spent the $$ and bought a top of the line notebook - my fault for the decision and their fault for the problems. I'll not buy another HP computer but I might add their printers are doing an excellent job for us. Customer service has been pretty good I would say.
will this hp compaq prisario v6000 supports linux redhat?
yes i would like to change my video card, and i would also like to get the NVIDIA gr force 6600 gt video card but what specific model do i need for this laptop?
Hey there!
I was wondering if anybody had any problems with loud fan noises on a Presario v6000?
I bought this one on summer 2007, so it's been a lil more than a year.
I while ago it was just fine, until summer came and of course the room was kinda hot. That provoked my laptop's fan to continuously run for hours and hours and it's really loud. It's even loud on idle, which is really annoying especially when I'm at the library or in class. Right now, I'm just typing this post without a cooling pad (I'm not at home) and the temperature's at 55C. Other than that, I used to play games on this laptop that it sure did rise the temperature and caused the laptop to overheat-- and shuts itself down. I bought a cooling pad from Zalman series and it improved my situation.
It would be nice if anybody would have any suggestions on calming my laptop's fan down?
How can I change the settings to control the fan's settings?
Thanks for the help. Other than that, there were no problems at all.
I know you can use a can of compressed air and clean the fan.
A lot of people have there internal wifi cards on this laptop stop working. There is a good chance that this is a software problem, NOT a hardware problem like most people keep saying. My wireless went out on my Presario V6120 very shortly after installing... you guessed it.. Microsoft Windows Updates.
After trying to reinstall the drivers, trying to do system restores, and messing around with it for forever and none of it working, I finally backed up all my files, and reinstalled Vista to square one using System Recovery.
Now my WIFI works!!
This worked great for me since I didn't really care about loosing programs (I didn't have that many that took long to setup installed) and I backed up all of my files. Its like my computer is brand new again.
To do System Recovery, hit start and type system recovery in the search bar. Click the program that comes up. Create the recovery DVDs, insert disk one and restart your computer. Follow the prompts and you should have everything working with just some time invested.
I have a Presario v6000 and I have a 4 GB Sandisk Ultra II SD card and I use it in my camera. I wanted to take the pictures off of it, but when I put it in the computer, nothing happens. I am very frustrated. Can someone please help me because I just want to get those pictures off. Is it the size of it? The brand? I am not a very technical person, so human talk please. Thanks in advance!
I am about to replace the power cord adapter for the fourth time. I only wish I had seen this page before I bought this re-manufactured Presario V6000. Fully charged, when new, the battery lasted at most 1 hour. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with the issue with the power adaptor plug. When I contacted HP support, they would not acknowledge it was their issue. The power adapter is cow dung in my opinion. The lap top itself runs very hot, is slow, came with Vista which I immediately yanked out by its lungs. The laptop is a little better quality than the power cord, maybe zebra dung. No more of the low-end HPs/Compaqs for me.
so, i am having the power cable problem of it only charging for about 1-2 seconds and my warranty is no longer active.
will a new cable usually fix this problem? or usually would i have to get the internal part of the computer repaired??
just want to know what others have done in this situation and what has worked.
Hi,
I've had my presario v6000 for over two years now without any problems. I use my laptop almost everyday for fairly long periods of time.
But it decided to give up on me this evening. I went to turn it on after coming home from college and the LED lights came on for 10-15 seconds and then turned off. Its the first time this has ever happened to me. Once it turns on it sounds like its going to boot up but fails and shuts off. I wouldn't mind but it was working perfectly 2 hours beforehand when I was in the library at college.
I've tried taking out the battery, just using the charger etc with no avail! Has anybody had this problem before???..... and have they managed to fix it?
I really love this laptop, its brought me through 2 years of college with constant use and no problems. Having said that, I did replace the battery a few months ago because its battery life was getting very poor. This was probably due to having it plugged in constantly for long periods of time.
Please help!! :)
Kind Regards,
Eimear x x

I have purchased a v6000 Presario not long before. My old hp laptop is Presario r3000, And last month I have purchased a battery for my old laptop, so I want to sell this battery for 20% off. Anybody who are interested to it please contact me. The details you can take a look here(A replacement for hp campaq Presario r3000 laptop battery):http://www.laptop-battery-charger.net/batteries/compaq/presario-r3000.htm
I own a Presario V6000. I bought it used. I do not have any problems with the power cord receptacle. In my opinion, a wonderful laptop. I would not change anything.
I have a compaq presario v6000 and it powers on and everything... It boots up properly but after xx amount of time being on it dims the light to a low hue. Making it hard to see. You have to put a really bright light near the screen to see it. But that's really hard. Anyone know what the problem might be?? I want to repair it.
I have a Compaq Presario V6000. Does anyone know what the manufacturer's Bios password is?
i want to download presario v 6000 all driver software...i have xp operating systemin my lappy...so pls. can u tell me where from i get it...
I owned a pretty recent Compaq laptop until, well, recently.
Their designs are really quite good, especially when you see one up close and use it for a while. There are a lot of little details that most manufacturers don't get right - stuff like the labels for the ports above them, so you don't have to turn the computer sideways to find things. They're also thermally designed really well, such that the laptops never really get hot. And they feel like they're well built. They also always seem to have various features that, taken together, are only available at a higher price in other laptops.
The problem I had is that the power connector went out on me twice. The first time, it was repaired under warranty - second time, I was told it'd be $300 to fix. I looked at new Compaq laptops for a replacement, but they all have the same style power connector and I wasn't going to take a chance again. Ended up getting a good deal on an Acer instead. And my new laptop has just made me appreciate how well-designed and built the Compaq was in comparison - except for that goddang power connector, which is kind of a fundamental and important thing to screw up.
do you still have your compaq?
if so i have one but the screen is broken, would it be possible to buy your screen or laptop
Cammy
