AWS-2000p monitors weather, freaks out neighbours
So you've got your place all decorated but still think it's lacking a bit of a mad scientist vibe? Well, South Korea's Karak Electronics has got a solution for you in the form of the AWS-2000p weather station. Just hook this sucker up to your PC and you'll be able to monitor the weather outside in realtime, without having to look out your window. Out of the box the system will measure the amount of rainfall, direction of the wind, and wind velocity, although with a few modifications it looks like you could use it to harness lightening and power your house, or perhaps turn into a death ray of some sort. Availability and pricing information are a bit hard to come by, but we're guessing that they go something like: "not here" and "more than we can afford."[Via Digital World Tokyo]

That's just sweet.
I've had an Oregon Scientific WMR-968 wireless weather station for years. It's got an RS232 output, and I use software called Ambient Weather to monitor it.
I've got all the optional temp sensors for a total of 5 (indoor, outdoor, computer room, spare bedroom, master bedroom, garage). Each has a barometer on it as well.
It's got an outside rain gauge/bucket and wind sensor (ammometer? I don't remember what it's called).
Anwyay, I've had this setup running for years...
so does the rain water collect in that beer can? is that how they measure it? because if it is they better look out for cigarette butts before drinking it.
The siting of the instruments in the picture guarantees a very inaccurate weather observation, especially the wind direction and speed. Many of the small weather stations are so poorly sited as to make all the data only a curiousity.
That's not a beer can, idiot.
ugh, some people hate humor
A "wired" weather station....how retro. I don't see anything mentioned in the write up that would make this a "must buy". I too have an Oregon Scientific WMR 968 which is wireless but will be selling it to buy a top of the line weather station - a Davis Vantage Pro 2 wireless. The sensor package is more compact ( unlike in the picture above which resembes an old style UHF TV antenna ) and transmits farther. You can believe the nearly 1000' foot range that Davis quotes. My plan is to set up my weather station on my house ... add repeaters, get the neighbors who are interested to buy Davis consoles and then pay a year connect fee to attach to my sensor suite.
I got the joke! Finally, I'm laughing before someone else....
Poster #1. Wow, I'm impressed.
Hah...nerd.
You're and idiot also, Hautedawg, for thinking its funny.
I get the joke
oh and Donald Love the title
BTW don't call me and idiot cuz I just 2 B+ the entire school- and that was because I was taking Algebra as a 7th grader
Yeah, I get the joke too. My point is that it is cheesey and lame. I hate when people try to be funny but they end up sounding like idiots. Idiot.
So, if it isn't a beer can, what is it?
A WX station mounted on a balcony in an urban environemnt will give you bad data. Up/downdrafts, radiant heat, wind direction blocked, etc. Plus they mounted the vane 90 degrees off. Lame.
...or you could just look out your window.
Looks fun though
haha...wow, haven't they ever heard of EMF?
Davis instruments in Hayward California makes an Elite version of that doo hickey.
i talked to some of the guys there and said if they attached it to a wireless (i think they have one already) and then hook it up to a radio transmission tower via UHF connected to a system similar to Yaesu's WIRES for internet relay...we could have NASA monitoring the north pole and have it distributed for fun. i'm pretty sure NASA has stuff like that already, but Davis makes their stuff reasonable.
Ok you can just look out the window.. but thats not very 'engadget' is it :) We have a realtime weather feed from a wireless station on our roof in London that updates every two seconds.. its neat.
If anyones interested it runs in Flash and it linked in via the blog (sidelink Weather). http://www.digitalurban.blogspot.com
