Westinghouse DPF-0701 shows multiple shots per frame
You think hanging 8 x 10s on the wall is old school? Well, it looks like the standard fare of digital picture frames are getting refreshed too. Westinghouse has a new digiframe on the horizon that displays multiple digital photos in varying orientations. The DPF-0701 rocks a 7-inch 16:9 widescreen display housed in a strikingly large ebony bezel and includes an admittedly lacking 16MB of internal storage. Since you probably won't fit all your memories on that (right?), the frame supports USB thumb drives and a myriad of card formats including CF, SD, MMC, XD, MS Pro, and MS Duo. You can get your snapshot shuffle on when it drops later this month for $199.

I bought my wife the 8" DPF-801 for Mother's Day and it has been fantastic! It only had 8MB interanl, but I purchased a 1GB Memory Stick for $25 and loaded a couple hundred pix on it. No problems and super easy to use. So far, at least five other people that have seen it in her office have gomne out and purchased one for themselves.

What I have been waiting for on one of these frames is(and correct me if it already exists) a motion activation system so that it turns iteself off when no one is around.
Am I right or am I wrong?

Nice idea, however, technically hard to do. However, there are some digital photo frames with automatic power off.

I would love one of these. What a great idea!

Hook it up to a motion-sensing switch. Do a Google search for "motion sensing plug" or something - you'll find what you want.
Personally, the whole power cord thing is the part that gets me. I don't really know of any way around it, though. These things suck up too much juice to make rechargeable batteries a real option.
What I'm thinking about is that I'd like to use one of these for something other than a desktop, which is currently the only place they make sense with that power cord. I'd love to put one on my mantle or on a wall - a wall might be possible, but you'd have to punch a hole in it for the power. Which just seems unreasonable.
Or you could just not care about having an ugly cord hanging down your wall.

Hey, so, what I want to know is the resolution. I didn't see it from a cursory glance on their website in the specs. Seems like a pretty important spec to me. I would want AT LEAST 100ppi. If it looks like an old school PDA or something with 60ppi, I'm not interested.

@Mike
That's Brilliant!!
Michael @ Jul 13th 2006 11:26AM
Personally I don't understand why anybody would want one of these things. Paper is so much cheaper and your choice of frames are so much greater. But I guess people will blow money on anything.
BoZs13 @ Jul 13th 2006 11:32AM
Yeah, print out a few thousand pictures and see how much it costs.
Michael @ Jul 13th 2006 11:47AM
Why the heck would you put a thousands pictures in a picture frame? I could see swapping them out once a month maybe. But usually when most people put a picture in a frame it stays there for years.
But hey I guess people like to do different things.

I think today's generation of kids & parents get bored looking at the same old photos, this is a cool idea, but hasn't really taken off, now there are so many places to view photos and media, this is just another outlet--- looks like the price is decent, it may fly, especially the "mosaic" function, the Westinghouse name for this product category is Licensed by one of the largest LCD panel companies and it's a great way for them to get one of their branded products into more homes--- Looks like it offers quite a bit for the $$, but I don't get why they didn't upgrade the 8" with these features first?... the Mosaic function is pretty cool--

It's the difference vs. regular frame. You don't buy these to replace ONE picture frame, you buy it to replace the need to have 15-20, but take up the desk space of one. Plus if you have kids swapping out different pictures as they age and grow up - it can be a neat timeline piece - a photo album or twenty frames can never do the job as well. It is not for highlighting one specific memory.

These are great, never even occurred to me to have a mosaic feature. I've given away lots of the current model as gifts, people love 'em.
sygyzy @ Jul 13th 2006 1:39PM
It's about time the price point of these things came down. I'll be picking one up ASAP.

I just bought a 19 inch widescreen Viewsonic LCD for $160.
Ok, so it doesn't have the ability to decode JPG files without a computer... but how hard is it really to add a smart card reader and the chip to read in and display JPGs?
A 7 inch screen for $200? Whatever! You can get 9 inch portable DVD players for less than $100 these days... And when did Westinghouse become known for well made consumer electronics?
OhioKDR @ Jul 13th 2006 5:18PM
Westinghouse is selling the DPF-701 direct on their website for $149.99 + S&H ($6.96 to OH).

Does anyone know the slide show frequency? It would be great if it's something like once per day.
