Amazon planning ad-free video download service
Advertising Age is reporting that Amazon is close to launching an ad-free video download service, side-stepping Apple and Microsoft on the music front in hopes of snagging a chunk of the video market while the going's still good. It seems they weren't always so focused on video though, initially planning on a music service before deciding it wasn't worth the effort to take on Apple's mighty iTunes empire -- Microsoft apparently disagrees. Exact details on Amazon's proposed video service -- currently dubbed Amazon Digital Video (or Amazon DV) -- are understandably a bit sketchy, but it appears that it'll let users either download individual movies / TV shows for a yet-to-be-determined price or subscribe to a Netflix-type rental model. More details should be emerging soon enough -- if Ad Age is right, the service is gonna launch in mid-August.[Thanks, Chris]

Bit Torrents has ads, but it's still cheaper.
I hope they make it work with the Windows XP Media Center Online Spotlight.. and of course, PlaysForSure devices.
Apple's about to drop a movie store, that will have HD, 1080p downloads from every major US studio by the end of the year.
Apple already got to the studios, and many made exclusive contracts. You won't see Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros, or several other studios offering their movies anywhere but through Apple. Just like Apple did for nearly a year with the music store.
Apple is ahead of the game, I've seen their "DVR" if you call it that... HD subscription will make blu-ray boring.
I sure hope they add Amazon Digital Audio as well. Amazon DVDA would be a winner for sure.
Ha, Did you actually just say DVDA?
Is it reported anywhere (other than this post) that Amazon has abandoned its digital music service? I haven't seen any such news...
My opinion - another smoke screen from Amazon, again right before the earnings. They can't deliver decent profits for quarters, so they deliver this to speculate. Aya...
Tonight, shareholders got sick of it, finally.
i want to send me funny videos
It should be interesting but I don't think they have a chance. Not with Apple and Microsoft in the mix. Shareholders and stakeholders are obviously not happy with Amazon.
No bail out this time, Jeff (Bezos).
Time to restructure + focus. Get back to fundamentals.
(It's becoming a bad habit to earn quick bucks shorting AMZN every time they announce something.)
