3/3/09 I was indoors barefoot, tripped but didn't fall, broke my 5th Metatarsal in my left foot. I saw a doctor about 36 hours later. I was told it was a spiral break with a slight separation, the joint is ok. In 3 weeks when I'm next x-rayed if there's no sign of healing -- there's poor circulation in that part of the foot, etc. -- I might need an operation. A week after the break I was given (well, my insurance bought) -- an Exogen 4000+. The salesman told me I can use it up to twice a day for 20 minutes each time as long as there's a 10 hour interval. I should give myself the treatment about the same day every day.
I'm wearing a boot, have my foot wrapped in an ace bandage, have a cane. I've been told to try and not put any weight on my foot which is impossible with just a cane, When I next see the doctor I plan to again asking him about crutches.
The salesman told me he sells about 500 Exogen 4000 each month in NYC -- as he says, New York is a city of walkers and there's lots of uneven pavement, etc.
Now I'm waiting for my 3 week x-ray, have lined up an appointment for a 2nd opinion if I'm told I need an operation.
